During maintenance closures (EVERY Tuesday and Thursday from 5:00 am to 9:00 am) , our intention is to conduct a higher level of maintenance to the area without compromising dog and patron safety. To view the location of the off-leash area in the park please see the Shawnee Mission Park Map. For the enjoyment of all patrons and pets all JCPRD Dog Off-Leash Area Code of Conduct/Rules apply. JCPRD has a total of four dog off-leash areas. Our off-leash areas are located in Heritage Park, Thomas S. Stoll Memorial Park and Kill Creek Streamway Park (at the 95th Street access point). Each off-leash area offers an enclosed, fenced area.

Today is National Dog Day and we wanted to share the top three photos we received last year for a photo contest we ran in Dec. 2023. This contest was tied to a well-known pet company who planned to feature the beach located in the Shawnee Mission Park Dog Off-Leash Area to be featured as one of the top dog beaches in the United States. Their article did not publish as planned, but we still wanted to feature the dogs.

Here are the top three dogs in no particular order and their pet owners:

1. Ollie hanging out at the dog beach at sunset. Pet owner is Nicole Schuh.
2. Kuro on the dog beach with some fall colors in the distance. Pet owner is Sammy Kirkendoll
3. Milo laying on the dog beach. Pet owner is Matthew Jack.

Feel free to share photos of your dogs in the comments.

The 87th Street entrance to Shawnee Mission Park is back open, and Barkley Drive east of the roundabout to west of Shelter 10 has reopened. There will be occasions where we need to shut down Barkley Drive before the end of the project, but it will be very minimal.

The Central corridor of the new South Loop Trail has been paved, but work continues on grading, seeding, and signage. This trail is still not open to the public.

The West corridor is still being cleared and graded. The South Loop Trail is expected to be complete in the Fall of 2024 and will create a 5 mile loop around Shawnee Mission Park, while also connecting the Gary L. Haller Trail near Shelter 8 to the Walnut Grove Trail and Parkhurst Trail near Shelter 10.

The 87th Street entrance to Shawnee Mission Park is now closed for the construction of a roundabout at the intersection at John Barkley Drive and Ridgeview Road. You can still get into the park via Renner Road or Ogg Road. Keep an eye out for detour signs that'll guide you to the Dog Off-Leash Area, and RC Flying Field. This closure will be in effect through at least May.

Starting in June, construction will start on a new two-mile paved trail to Shawnee Mission Park's south side, connecting the Gary L. Haller Trail near Shelter 8 to the Walnut Grove and Parkhurst Trails by Shelter 10. This new trail will increase access to the scenic areas of the park, connect existing trails, and improve safety for all park users. This new paved trail should be completed by late 2024.

JCPRD is bringing a new two-mile paved trail to Shawnee Mission Park's south side, connecting the Gary L. Haller Trail near Shelter 8 to the Walnut Grove and Parkhurst Trails by Shelter 10. This new trail will increase access to the scenic areas of the park, connect existing trails, and improve safety for all park users.

The project kicks off with Phase 1 on Monday, March 4 and will require us to close the 87th Street entrance to the park to work on the intersection at John Barkley Drive and Ridgeview Road. But don’t worry, you can still get into the park via Renner Road or Ogg Road. Just keep an eye out for the detour signs that'll guide you to the Dog Off-Leash Area, RC Flying Field, and other cool spots in the park.

Phase 2 will begin in June, focusing on the trail itself, and by then, the 87th Street entrance will be reopened. The trail should be completed by late 2024.
