My name is Kaesi Cook and I live in Silverton Oregon. I am passionate about Pekingese and love to share my knowledge and experience. I've owned Pekingese for over 33 years and have been a breeder/exhibitor since 1999. He was my first homebred boy and the first Best In Specialty show winner. His name was Sun Dragon. His official name was AKC/CKC CH Oakhill's Sun Dragon Of Windemere, ROM. He's the s

ire of 10 Champion offspring. My kennel and success is based on his bloodlines and all of the Pekingese I raise are down from him. I owe it all to him, an amazing dog that I was blessed to know and love. I hope you enjoy our site and if you have any questions of concerns about Pekingese please don't hesitate to email or message me. Many Blessing,

Kaesi

CDC Revises Requirements for Importing Dogs Older Than 6 Months from Low-Risk Countries

July 22, 2024, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) provided an update related to new CDC requirements effective August 1 for importing or traveling into the United States with a dog older than 6 months of age.

The revisions to the rule no longer require an additional rabies vaccination form certified by a USDA-accredited veterinarian or an official government veterinarian in the exporting country. Instead, for dogs entering the U.S. from low-risk or dog-maintained rabies virus variant (DMRVV)-free countries like Canada, the revised rule simplifies entry by requiring one form—the CDC Dog Import Form—that does not have to be endorsed by a veterinarian. This form requires the dog’s microchip number, a picture, and an attestation that the dog has not been in a high-risk country in the past six months. Continue reading: http://caninechronicle.com/?p=296491

Additionally, instead of making travelers update this form for every entry, it will now be valid for six months. However, CDC will continue to require all dogs entering the U.S. to be at least six-months old and be microchipped.

With Tracheal Hypoplasia, the trachea has a decreased luminal diameter resulting in breathing difficulties. The condition is common in Bulldog and non-Bulldog brachycephalic breeds.

The evaluation consists of a subjective evaluation of tracheal size and uniformity by a board certified veterinary radiologist, and an objective evaluation based on the ratio (TLR) of the tracheal lumen diameter at the thoracic inlet to the width of the proximal third rib. For certification, dogs must be at least 12 months of age at the time of radiography, must have a normal subjective evaluation of the tracheal size and uniformity, and must have a TLR greater than or equal to 2.0.

Pekingese are especially sensitive to the heat.

Here are some safety reminders to help everyone have a fun summer:

🚗Don't leave your pet in a vehicle. Even with the window cracked, the temperature inside a car can quickly climb to more than 110 degrees. Dogs don't perspire, they pant. Heatstroke is life-threatening for animals and can happen when dogs are left in cars with the windows rolled up or cracked slightly. If not caught in its earliest stages, heatstroke can be fatal. Symptoms of heatstroke include: panting, dehydration, excessive drooling, increased body temperature - above 103° F (39° C), reddened gums and moist tissues of the body, production of only small amounts of urine or no urine, and rapid heart rate.

💦Provide your pet with plenty of clean, cool drinking water. This is very important in order to avoid dehydration. However, do not let your dog drink a lot of water before, during or after exercise because a condition called gastric torsion, or bloat, may result. A dog, especially a deep-chested breed like the German Shepherd, can die from bloat. Its stomach may swell and even rotate like a wringing towel, which cuts off blood supply through the stomach.

☀ Avoid exercising your pet during the midday summer heat. Exercising your animal is important, but it is better to do so in the early morning or evening hours when the temperatures are lower, and the pavement isn't so hot. Your dog can get damaged or blistered feet from hot asphalt. Consider running on the roadside or grass, or walking your dog early in the morning or later in the evening.

🏃If you jog with your dog, it is important to ensure that your dog is healthy enough to jog with you, enjoys it, and that you have gradually built an exercise program that your dog can handle. Dogs can suffer from heatstroke if overworked, particularly in hot weather.

🏞You and your dog may be tempted to go into a river, lake or stream to cool off. Make sure to be aware of current toxic algae advisories, for your health and that of your dog: https://www.oregonvma.org/toxic-algae-advisories When in doubt, stay out.
