We wanted to share the following correspondence we received from the American Kennel Club regarding the mystery illness that has been going around.

Precautions Regarding Canine Upper Respiratory Illness

There are a lot of unknowns about this newest canine illness. We should all do our best to work to avoid the spread of this disease by following these basic recommendations:
- Keep your dog up to date on vaccines including but not limited to Bordetella, Parainfluenza, and Canine Influenza, and avoid direct contact with other dogs.
- If your dog has been exposed to a dog with an upper respiratory illness, but is showing no symptoms, it is recommended you quarantine your dog for a minimum of 2 weeks. Do not take it to any areas where other dogs will be.
- If your dog has been exposed to a dog with an upper respiratory illness, and is showing symptoms, it is recommended you quarantine your dog for a minimum of 4 weeks after all symptoms have passed. Do not take it to any areas where other dogs will be.
- Absolutely do not take your dog to any events if it is showing any signs of respiratory illness such as coughing, sneezing, wheezing, any nasal discharge, lack of energy, or difficulty breathing.
- Avoid sharing water and food bowls among dogs. Dog bowls should be washed regularly.
- Regularly wash or sanitize your hands, especially after handling dogs.

While judging guidelines recommend that judges ask the exhibitor to display the oral exam, during this time and out of an abundance of caution, judges are expected to have the exhibitor display the oral exam and may personally examine the mouth ONLY if absolutely necessary. Where applicable, judges must conduct thumb exams.

If necessary to personally examine the mouth, the judge MUST sanitize their hands after examining the dog, and as a general practice, are strongly encouraged to sanitize their hands after examining each entry. Re-examining of dogs should be minimized.

Clubs hosting conformation events should provide hand sanitizer/wipes for judges and stewards to use between dogs. Equipment used to measure and/or weigh dogs should be sanitized before and after each use.

Responsible actions by exhibitors, judges, and clubs are necessary to minimize any risks to our dogs. We thank everyone for their thoughtful cooperation and diligence in taking these extra measures.

With our upcoming trial this weekend, we thought it’s important to share this email AKC has been sending out. If your dog exhibits any symptoms, please do NOT bring them to the dog training club or other public places.

“We are aware of the reports of Canine Respiratory Infectious Disease that caused some dogs at recent events to fall ill. While the cause is yet to be identified, some public information has indicated that the infection is viral in nature. Symptoms include coughing, sneezing, nasal and/or eye discharge, and lethargy.

The health and safety of dogs at AKC events is the responsibility of each and every exhibitor. Exhibitors are responsible for monitoring the health of their dogs and should be mindful to keep any dog that has been exposed to sick dogs or that is exhibiting symptoms of illness at home.

Pursuant to AKC rules, “No dog with a communicable disease shall be on the show grounds or premises. Exhibitors should follow their veterinarian’s recommendations to ensure that their dogs are free of internal and external parasites, any communicable disease, and have appropriate vaccinations.”

It is important to be mindful and exercise caution to protect against Canine Respiratory Infectious Disease. Below are some tips to assist you.

- The best protection is vaccination. Dogs should up to date on all core vaccines as well as Bordetella and bivalent influenza
- Isolate sick animals and keep them isolated for up to 30 days after symptoms subside.
- Practice good sanitation. Use a bleach and water mixture diluted to 1-part bleach x 30 parts water to disinfect common areas such as tables, bowls, leashes, crates, etc. Allow items to thoroughly air dry for a minimum of 10 minutes before exposing dogs to them.
- Wash your hands frequently, ideally between handling different dogs. At the very minimum, hand sanitizer should be used between handling dogs.”

Our July agility trial is a wrap! Everything is cleaned up and put away and the club is ready for classes on Monday! We had a super group of people ready to face the heat and have a great time with some dogs.

Thank you to our Judge Ann McQuillen for the great courses! The dogs had a blast!!!

Thank you Laurie for being an amazing trial secretary! You kept everything moving along!

Thank you to our Chief Ring Steward Rosie, we all know the job is like herding cats. Thank you to everyone who volunteered to work a class.

Special thanks for our chief course builders Barb and Carolyn and everyone who helped build with them. We literally would not have had courses to play with our dogs on without you.

We look forward to seeing all the exhibitors again next and maybe even a few more. It was great to see how many novice dogs we had this trial.

Please share your action or ribbon photos with us from this weekend!
