This is what it's all about!
A few months ago we posted about Ralphie trusting us to blow dry him partially while on the floor. At his first visit, turning the hv dryer on wasn't an option, so we used our slicker brush fan.
This last Sunday, Ralphie trusted Andrew to use the HV dryer to completely dry him! This is such progress and what we work towards with every dog! We never force dogs, instead we work with them โค๏ธ
This is why we do what we do! Long post!
This big guy had his third appointment with us. At his first appointment, turning the HV dryer on was not an option, and we used our slicker brush fan to dry him. At his second visit, the HV dryer was still too much, but a hair dryer was tolerated. At his third visit, he allowed us to use the HV dryer on nearly his entire body.
This dog outweighs both of us, so while this isn't our traditional drying spot, we see this as a huge win and awesome improvement!
This dog has learned to trust us and he has learned that we are not going to hurt him, but instead we're going to move at his pace and respect his boundaries.
I've worked at Corporate and I've worked in a private salon, and at both places I've heard the same thing: "You're the boss, don't coddle that dog, you have to just push them through it."
And time after time I see this mentality causing dogs to hate grooming, to start biting the groomer, and they have no idea why the dog is suddenly "aggressive."
Don't get me wrong, there are certain things you can push a dog through, but its all about knowing where the dog's threshold is and working with them. There are certain things that I will correct, such as biting or trying to climb out of the tub, but these are safety issues, not aesthetic issues. We do all of this within the dogs limits, and then we get to earn their trust and create a happy grooming experience instead of a fearful one. And that is why we do what we do the way we do it.
Today's tip on showing your dog love by meeting their physical and emotional needs is pretty easy and takes less than 30 seconds: wipe away their eye boogers.
We use a warm, damp cloth and gently wipe their face. Eye boogers and crusties can build up, causing discomfort and even open sores, and I've had to refer a few clients to see their vet because the build was too bad.
We do this everyday for both dogs, and it's just apart of our routine first thing in the morning and then usually again in the evening.
If your dog isn't a fan, try using treats to create a positive association!
Today's enrichment tip: do something your dog loves! Today we had Royce's dock diving competition in Plymouth, and he jumped a new personal best at 20'3"!
An actual clip of us checking our messages each day ๐
our voicemail has been having a delay, so texting or messaging through Facebook is the fastest way to get a response.
Also, congratulations to Mary Beth Ganzel for being the winner of our June contest! You have won $45 of free grooming services!
We are closed this morning to celebrate Rose's second birthday! We have a few appointments this afternoon and then more festivities!
We get asked a lot what kind of dogs we have and, well, they're the dogs in our logo! Our Australian Shepherd is four and his name is Royce, and our Saint Bernard is almost two and her name is Rose, and we are utterly obsessed with them!
I have openings as early as this Friday for grooming appointments! One on one grooming, high quality products, little to no kennel time, a relaxed, comfortable environment to create a happy grooming experience! Reasonable pricing, message me for details!
