Exciting news! 🐾 At the end of September, we will be offering an AKC Canine Good Citizen course in the Black Hills area. This weekend event starts on Friday with an introduction, continues on Saturday with the class, and concludes on Sunday with the test.

The Canine Good Citizen certification, offered by the American Kennel Club, is essential for all my service and therapy dogs to make sure they are ready for public access. It's also great for non working dogs as a certification showing the dog's good manners, and it adds a title to their name whether it's a purebred with documents or not.

We are also preparing for our first therapy trip to the Hot Springs VA Retirement Home in November. If you want to participate with your dog, you must complete a Canine Good Citizen course.

Back to school season is approaching! As we get ready for a new routine, it's important to prepare our dogs for the changes. Consistency is key to helping your dog adjust. Make sure to find a routine, maintain boundaries, and provide lots of positive reinforcement. With patience and preparation, your dog can smoothly transition into the new school year with you. 🐾

Hot pavement can be dangerous for our furry friends! If you can't hold your hand on the cement for 5 seconds, it's too hot for your dog to walk on. Dogs sweat through their paws, making it harder for them to cool down, and increase the risk of overheating. Always check the ground temperature, provide plenty of water, and keep them in the shade. Let's keep our dogs safe and comfortable during these hot summer days!

It's time for some myth-busting! 🐾
One common misconception about service dogs is that they are always perfectly behaved and never need correction. The truth is, even well-trained service dogs can have off days. They still have lots of personality and aren't robots or cookie-cutter animals. The key distinction is that a well-trained service dog is always under control. If a service dog shows unwanted behavior, the handler can step in and shut it down effectively.

Today we celebrate National Disability Independence Day! As someone with a disability, I understand the importance of independence. My journey to starting Elite Cerberus Canines began when I was on a waitlist for a service dog. Training my own dog gave me the independence and confidence I needed. Now, my passion is helping others achieve their independence through the incredible support of service dogs.

Did you know that dogs can be trained to detect seizures? 🐾 These incredible seizure assistance dogs have such great noses that they can sense chemical changes in our bodies long before we ever do. Through lots of specialized nose training, they learn to sense and respond to seizures, providing essential support and safety for their handlers. Whether it’s alerting to an oncoming seizure or staying close during an episode, they make a big impact.

As we get ready to celebrate the fourth, let's remember to keep our dogs safe during fireworks. If you’re planning to bring your dog to a fireworks display, make sure they’re equipped with a secure harness instead of a collar. Always keep the leash securely in your hand, not just wrapped around it. Fireworks can be overwhelming for dogs, so take extra care to ensure they feel safe and secure. Enjoy the festivities and keep your pets' comfort in mind!
