We here at SVAH had an awesome visit from The Learning Community kindergarten class. They got to learn about what we do here at SVAH to help pets. We dressed up two volunteers as a Surgeon and as a Doctor. They all got to pet Mr. Scout. We topped off the visit by bandaging their stuffed animal’s booboos.

Another food Recall ……..

Mid America Pet Food Issues Voluntary Recall of Victor Beef Meal & Rice Dog Food Due to Possible Salmonella Health Risk

Company Announcement
Mid America Pet Food, Mount Pleasant, Texas, is voluntarily recalling three lots of Victor Super Premium Dog Food, Select Beef Meal & Brown Rice Formula produced at its Mount Pleasant, Texas production facility because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. This voluntary recall was initiated after a third-party conducted random sampling and product associated with three lots tested positive for Salmonella. Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

No human or pet illnesses have been reported to date.

Products were distributed to various distributors and retailers in the United States. The affected product includes:

Product Description Lot Number Bag Size Best By Date

1000016890 5 pound bag 6/12/2024
1000016891 15 pound bag 6/12/2024
1000016892 40 pound bag 6/12/2024

Do not feed the recalled products to pets or any other animals. Destroy the food in a way that children, pets and wildlife cannot access. Wash and sanitize pet food bowls, cups and storage containers. Always ensure that you wash and sanitize your hands after handling recalled food or any utensils that come in contact with recalled food.

Swannanoa Valley Animal Hospital
Announcement…………..

September 24, 2023
Dear SVAH Family,
We are writing to let our clinic family know that Dr Scott, age 63, has decided to reduce his work schedule to one day a week starting Oct 1st, 2023. Additionally, Dr Sharp will be having elbow surgery on Sept 28th, and it may be several weeks before he can perform surgeries again. Our new full time associate, Dr Valentio will still be available for appointments and surgery.
What does this mean for you?
In the short term, SVAH may not be able to accommodate appointment requests as quickly as we have in the past. Because we will be prioritizing sick pet appointments, you may notice longer wait times for annuals or well pet visits. For now, we will need to refer out spay/neuter surgeries to the Humane Alliance Spay/Neuter Clinic. Also, our Registered Veterinary Techs (RVTs) will start assisting more with certain well pet visits (ie, puppy/kitten visits, vaccine boosters, surgery discharge instructions, etc).
We are already in contact with several “relief vets” in our area to come assist us with our case load. As a client, you will notice new faces and new names during your visits. Please be accepting of these vets as we look for more permanent doctors to join our growing hospital family.
Know that we are working hard to limit the disruption to your pet’s veterinary care.
Sincerely yours,

Dr. Otto Sharp and all the SVAH Staff

Hello SVAH Family

Have you ever wondered which leg your dog is limping on??? You say it’s the right and your spouse says it’s the left.

Here is an easy way to find out …
Use the “slow-mo” feature on you phone’s camera.
You want to have the pet walking towards you. The head of the pet always goes DOWN with the good leg, and UP on the bad leg.
Notice this dog walking towards me. This dog has a bad left front leg.

I hope this trick helps you in the future.
You can always bring in video of your pet for us to see.

Take care

Dr Sharp

Hello SVAH Family,

Many clients ask if the “on-line companies” are cheaper on pet food prices than SVAH.

Well here’s the answer…..
NO they are not!

On-line company’s mark up their pet food prices 8-10% higher than we do.
We even beat the “autoship” pricing.

SVAH thinks it’s wrong for struggling working class families to be charged more for high quality pet foods that can save or extend their pets life, like: Kidney Diets for pets in Renal failure, Diabetic Diets, Bladder Stone Prevention Diets, Weight Lost Diets, etc.

Below are yesterdays Chewy list prices.
- On a 35lbs bag of dog food you’d save $8.15 at SVAH
- On a 4lbs bag of cat food you’d save $2.05 at SVAH

I hope this helps everyone.

Sincerely

Dr Sharp
