There’s possibly nothing better than fun in the sun with your horse, am I right? While we hope your summer is one for the books, please remember to always remain vigilant to your horse’s needs in hot weather and on the road. Heat stress and dehydration in particular should not be underestimated, as both can have serious consequences for our equine friends.

Pro Tip: Consult your veterinarian for additional recommendations on how to keep your horse safe and comfortable on the road this summer.

Happy trails!

Adding to yesterday's tips for trail riding etiquette, our remaining five tips include:
6. Riding at the level and speed of the least experienced rider, waiting for other riders who have dismounted to remount, and checking with other riders before changing gaits;
7. Maintaining at least one horse’s body length between horses and placing a red ribbon on tails of horses known to kick;
8. Announcing trail hazards (e.g., low branches, dogs);
9. Passing other horseback riders or trail users in a single file; and
10. Allowing horses the opportunity to drink at water crossing and waiting nearby until all horses have drank

05/20/2022

Many trails are open to multiple users (e.g., hikers or bicyclists) and part of good trail etiquette is ensuring horseback riders are respectful of trails and other trail users. This includes:
1. Parking only in designated areas;
2. Riding only on trails designated for horseback riding;
3. Not littering;
4. Greeting other trail users; and
5. Announcing your presence and passing other trail users slowly, in single file and on the left side

🤠Happy Saturday NATRC family! When you ride in a NATRC event you can count on a well-marked trail and a map to get you where you’re going. ↗️ The Trailmaster for each competitive ride is a very important volunteer who determines the trail route and is responsible to mark and map it. ↖️ It can take several volunteers many hours to clear and mark a competition trail. ↙️ Typically this is done with color ribbons and pie plates/signs. In many areas they must also go back out after the event to remove all the ribbons and other markers. ↩️ If you enjoyed the trail, hug your Trailmaster!
