A reminder that our clinic will be closed on July 4th.

If you need to fill a medication for your pet, call us no later than Saturday, 6/29. Please note that we have a 72 hour turn around time for medication refills and will not be able to fill medications requested after Saturday, 6/29 in time for the 4th of July. This is very important as all medications, even refills, must be reviewed and approved by one of our doctors.

Fawn season is upon us, so it's time for our annual reminder about deer and fawn safety! Please read below for a note from Dr. Dana about keeping your pets safe when deer are present and what you can do if you find a fawn.

Fawn season is upon us. This time of year mother deer are extremely protective of their fawns and can injure and even kill pets that interact with the fawns. Since coyotes have established themselves here, it seems as though the does are even more aggressively guarding their young than they did when we did not have coyotes.

Every year we get some pets (usually dogs) that have been injured by deer, sometimes fatally. The amount of damage a doe can do with her hooves is impressive. If you have any doubts about the lethal power of a protective doe, simply look up videos on YouTube. Warning: this search is not for the faint of heart.

Please do your best to keep your pets away from fawns and away from areas where deer are likely to congregate.

Also, if you find a fawn, leave it alone unless it is in a very dangerous location. If you MUST move the fawn, place it somewhere close by where you found it. Often young fawns appear to be extremely weak and floppy if you try to pick them up. This is normal. These fawns will jump right up when the doe (who is likely nearby) comes to check on them.

Remember that seemingly gentle deer are quite capable of defending themselves when they need to. Please keep your pets safe by limiting their deer interactions, especially during fawn season.

An update from Dr. Dana Ness on a change to our emergency hours:

Like many businesses in general and veterinary practices in particular, we are very short-staffed at this time. As a result, our employees, including our DVMs, are stretched very thin. Our DVMs in particular are routinely facing days of a full schedule of appointments plus work in emergencies, leading to workdays of at least 10 to 12 hours with little to no downtime.

Due to staffing issues, we will be reducing the number of after-business hours that a DVM is on call. Starting Monday October 2, 2023, Fair Isle will have a DVM scheduled on call each day, including Sundays and holidays, from 8 am to 8 pm.

This schedule can be affected by DVM illness or availability, so there may be some days where we do not have a DVM on call. If that is the case, our out-going after hours message will be changed to alert people to that fact.

Our telephone triage service will still be available at all times after hours. You will be able to talk to a licensed veterinary professional about any urgent or emergent concerns you have with your pet, and they can help you determine if emergency care is needed. If your pet needs emergency care outside of the hours an on-island DVM is available, the triage service can help you decide which local 24hr ER you can go to off island.

We realize this situation is less than ideal. Our intent is to support our DVMs in maintaining their mental health and decreasing burnout. We also want to support them in being able to do their best work during their day shifts by ensuring they are getting at least a bit of break overnight.

We greatly value our clients and patients. I cannot fully express my deep gratitude to you for being with us through changes and treating our staff so graciously. This is uncommon in the greater veterinary world. We are honored that you choose Fair Ilse for veterinary care.

The decision to change our on call hours was not made lightly and will enable us to keep providing veterinary care during these interesting times.

An update on leptospirosis from our practice owner, Dr. Dana Ness:

As you likely already know, 4 Paws had two suspect leptospirosis cases from the same household on June 2, 2023. In response to that we have worked to get our canine patients up to date on their leptospirosis vaccines in order head off or avoid a leptospirosis outbreak.

There have not been any further confirmed or strongly suspect leptospirosis cases since June 2nd.

I would like to commend everyone who made the effort to update their dog’s leptospirosis vaccine. I am thankful that the leptospirosis vaccine clinics we did went so well. The fact that we have wonderful clients and patients is a huge part of that success. I am also extremely thankful that we did not have a leptospirosis outbreak.

At this point, continue to take standard leptospirosis prevention precautions. If there is any uptick in lepto infections, we will send out another email. Please contact us if you have any specific questions or concerns.

We have an amazing community here and Fair Isle is very grateful to our clients and patients!
