Vega
9-1-2004 ~ 10-21-2022

This morning we lost our beautiful Vega.
Her mother, Audrey Hepburn, was a feral cat who was captured by VIPP just a day before having her litter of kittens.
Vega and her siblings came into this world in the best of circumstances, being born while under the care of the best possible cat lovers.
Initially, her name was Rho, as the litter was named with Greek letters.
We adopted Rho and renamed her Vega when she was only about 8 weeks old. Of all the kitties present that day, I was immediately drawn to her.
Farewell Vega! You were unconditional Love.
You will be missed.

UPDATE - WINSTON HAS BEEN FOUND 👏
LOST POMERANIAN IN DOCTON: Someone from off island visiting freinds in Docton had their pomeranian, WINSTON, run off last night (9/8). He is still missing. He is not wearing the harness in the photo. The owner had to leave the island but will return with Winston's crate to leave out at their friends house. Everyone in the Docton/Docton Park area - please check under decks, in garages/sheds, etc. If you see him and he runs from being approached, see if you can sit a little ways away not facing him and throw him treats to keep him in one place. Please call the owner, Cliff, at 208-362-4771, or VIPP at 206-389-1085 *102 if he is spotted or secured. THANK YOU!

FINAL 4:08 p.m.: Two-boat service has resumed on our Fauntleroy/Vashon/Southworth route with Issaquah and Kitsap sailing all stops with no set schedule. We will switch to the posted two-boat schedule later this evening.

UPDATE 3:35 p.m.: With Cathlamet moved and terminal infrastructure cleared for safe service, we've restored service at Fauntleroy with Issaquah making all stops on our "Triangle" route. Kitsap is en route to Vashon and when it arrives, we will assess how to set up or reset the schedule for both boats.

UPDATE 3:15 p.m.: U.S. Coast Guard has cleared us to move Cathlamet out of Fauntleroy terminal. Vessel will do a few stops for crewing purposes before heading to our Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility for repairs. Issaquah is now heading to Fauntleroy for service to resume there. We are working to get Kitsap on the Fauntleroy/Vashon/Southworth route to restore two-boat service on the run.

UPDATE 2:30 p.m.: With Fauntleroy terminal still out of service, people with monthly or multi-ride vehicle/passenger passes for Vashon and Southworth will be allowed to use their pass at Colman Dock in Seattle for today only to help facilitate their travel. For walk-on riders trying to get between Vashon Island and the mainland, King County Metro Transit has added an additional round trip of the King County Water Taxi leaving Pier 50 in downtown Seattle at 3:30 p.m. and out of Vashon at 3:58 p.m.

UPDATE 12:50 p.m.: We are working with King County Metro Transit and Kitsap Transit on how their passenger-only ferry service can help get people home this afternoon and evening. We'll keep you looped in on these travel options – especially for Vashon Island residents.

UPDATE 12:15 p.m.: Fauntleroy terminal remains closed while U.S. Coast Guard investigates this morning’s hard landing of Cathlamet. The vessel can’t be moved until this is complete. Then, the dock structure will be examined and if it’s determined to be usable, we’ll restore service there.

UPDATE 10 a.m.: The Seattle PD is turning away all traffic at the Fauntleroy terminal. No one will be able to line up on Fauntleroy Way. The terminal is CLOSED until further notice. We'll keep updating as we learn more.

ORIGINAL POST: The Fauntleroy Terminal is out of service until further notice following a hard landing by the Cathlamet this morning. The Issaquah will be the only boat on the route for now and will continue service between Southworth and Vashon. The boat will not operate on its regular schedule and just load vehicles before departing to its next destination to move as much traffic as possible.

There will be no midday tie up of the Point Defiance/Tahlequah route to assist with service during this time. Therefore, there will be an additional 12:35 p.m. sailing from Point Defiance, and a 1 p.m. sailing from Tahlequah.

Passengers should prepare for significant waits and are encouraged to take alternate routes if they still need to travel.

Cathlamet suffered significant damage in the incident, as did an offshore dolphin (a terminal feature that helps guide the boat in). We continue to gather information (and pictures from the scene) and will provide updates as we learn more.

LOST CAT: Last seen 5/30/22 from the 11000 block of SW 160th St. (near the Vashon Municiple airport) Justice AKA Juju is a friendly floof that likes humans, cats, and gentle dogs alike. Might be lost in your garage/barn/shed so please check if you can, he's very curious and will explore the tiniest places. Has a soft meow so you might not hear him easily, but he is quite chatty. You can pick him up and he will tolerate being held, but if he startles he will bolt. If you see him, please call VIPP (206)389-1085 or [email protected].

Whew! Another tough day.

ALL HAIL MOTHER NATURE’S ORIGINAL SUPERFOOD FOR DOGS🐶, THE ALMIGHTY EGG🥚 AKA NATURE’S MULTIVITAMIN!

When sourcing the perfect longevity snack for your dog, the humble egg🥚 should be at the top of your list! If there was such a thing as a perfect food for pets, it would be eggs. They are rich in bioavailable amino acids, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals while being relatively low in calories and carbs. Whether from chicken🐔, quail, or ducks🦆, eggs are nature’s nutrition bombs!

Eggs🥚 contain all ten essential amino acids needed to support effective muscle growth, recovery and maintenance. Eggs are also rich in choline, a nutrient crucial to the production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the brain, which aids brain function, memory, and may help treat & even prevent “doggy dementia”.🧠

Lastly, research shows as many as 60% of dogs have signs of arthritis🦴, on x-rays, and one veterinary study found dogs who consumed egg shell membrane had significantly less joint pain, so start feeding your pets more eggs as treats!

What’s the best way to feed an egg?🍳

The fastest method, obviously, is to offer them raw… this is how animals have been eating eggs for millennia. However, according to science, lightly cooking the egg protein (called avidin) makes the B vitamin biotin easier to absorb but if you opt to cook you eggs, remember to not overcook them! Logically, applying too much heat to good food is a naturally destructive process. The chemistry of heating foods looks a lot like unwinding molecules, for better or for worse. Heating egg whites is generally beneficial, however, the yolks would do better with less heat, because heat damages fats and vital nutrients inside.

Soft boiled is the ultimate way to cook an egg🥚 (this is when you boil an egg, but it’s still a little runny and the yolk is definitely not hard) because the fats and nutrients in the yolk essentially have three protective layers from oxidation – the water, eggshell, and egg white. This way, all of the good stuff in the egg yolk is maximally preserved while the whites are cooked enough for best protein utilization and removal of avidin.

Instructions for soft boiling:
Fill a medium pot with water and heat to a gentle simmer, just below boiling. Using a slotted spoon, carefully lower the eggs into the water and let simmer for 7 minutes (6 minutes for a runnier egg).

When choosing eggs, go for pastured, free-range eggs to get the most nutrients. One egg is about seventy calories. My 30lb dog Shubie gets an egg on her meal several times a week.

In our new book, The Forever Dog, we list over 40 of our favorite longevity foods you add to your pup’s bowl, backed by the most surprising new science as to why they’re so amazing at building health and longevity! We also show you how to add them in a way that keeps your pup’s nutrition in balance.

You’ll want to check out the section called: “Core Longevity Toppers: Superfoods You Can Share with Your Dog on a Daily Basis.” We’ve also included handy charts on which foods are best at building your dog’s microbiome🦠, powerful polyphenol-rich foods🫐, as well as a long list of fast-n-fresh training treats, if you’re on the go. Orlando is one of our "double survivor" puppies from Tijuana. He beat distemper. And then he beat parvo. It's your generosity and support - and foster Nirva's gentle care, plus Orlando's will to live - that allow us to tell you today that Orlando is well and perfect and adoptable through Sunny Sky's Animal Rescue just south of Seattle, Washington.

Someone's going to get the bestest boy! Thank you for being a part of Orlando's triumphant story!

We sent fourteen dogs to Sunny Sky's Animal Rescue last week, all refugees from the extra hard streets of Tijuana. Mutt Mutt Engine covered extensive medical care for most of them too. If you can help us continue our work with a donation, please know we need it, every penny goes to the dogs. Helping is kind and beautiful. Thank you so much.

Orlando, we love you.

(RE-POST-Better Photo) A concerned person has trapped a stray cat in the area of Mom's Deli. She will be taking the cat to Fair Isle today (6/22) to have her checked for a chip. The cat looks to be a tabby with orange calico type markings. She also has some white around her mouth. If you know this cat or who she belongs to, please call VIPP at (206)389-1085 or [email protected].
