Winter weather has arrived! Check out our 5 winter safety tips for pets ⬇️

❄️ Winter Tune-Up Visit: Now is the perfect time to bring your pet in for a Winter Tune-Up visit. A tune-up visit (with these core services: wellness exam, bloodwork, dental evaluation, nutrition evaluation) will establish a baseline of wellness and help keep your pet happy and healthy in the new year.

❄️ Limit Exposure to Elements: Shorter walks and outside play time will help protect you and your pet from weather-related risks. Senior and arthritic pets may have difficulty walking and higher sensitivity to low temperatures and wind.

Short-haired pets tend to feel the cold faster as they have less protection, and short-legged pets may struggle to keep their bellies and bodies off snow-covered ground.

Pro Tip: Your pet’s tolerance for cold can vary based on coat, body fat stores, activity level, and health. Generally, if it’s too cold for you, it’s likely too cold for them.

❄️ Wipe Down + Clean Up: Winter walks can be lovely, but the salt, ice, and snow can be harsh on your pet’s paws and coat. Remember to care for paw pads by trimming long hair between toes, keeping them moisturized, and clean off any salt and debris from walks. Consider investing in a pair of booties to help keep paws safe and dry.

Pro Tip: Use a kitchen whisk to gently remove “ice balls” that have clumped up on your pet’s fur. You can also use lukewarm water to melt them away.

❄️ Avoid Ice + Frozen Water: Snow and crisp weather can be exciting for pets and fun in moderation. Be alert when around bodies of water in the winter. Frozen ponds, lakes, and other bodies of water can pose a serious threat to you and your pet’s safety. Partially frozen water can break under your pet’s weight and quickly turn into a dangerous situation. It’s best to stick to solid ground in the winter months.

Pro Tip: Learn to recognize changes in your pet’s behavior. Whining, shivering, anxiety, slowing down, and lifting/holding up paws can all be signs your pet is too cold and it’s time to get to safety.

❄️ Be Prepared: Make sure you are well prepared to handle the winter weather. Snow and ice storms can arrive quickly and you’ll want to have medications and food well stocked. Essential care like microchipping and making sure your pet is wearing a collar with an ID tag will help get your pet returned home if they get lost or escape in the snow.

Pro Tip: Emergency and first aid kits are extremely convenient in severe weather. Make personalized pet kits by stocking up on several days worth of food, water, and medication.
