Drs. Marshall and Berdine Martin have managed Martin Acres LLC since 1991 when they purchased the land from Drs. Marvin and Colleen Smitherman. This blueberry farm has three varieties. The Blue Crop and Blue Ray varieties are normally ready about July 1. The Elliott variety is normally ripe the last few days of July and harvest continues into August. Each bush is carefully pruned annually in the spring. Fertilizer and w**d and disease management occurs in April and May. Insect control may be needed in June/July depending on the IPM scouting protocol for insect presence which varies each year. There is ample parking close by and the grass between the rows is mowed on a regular basis to make it enjoyable for family picking. Buckets to pick into with special plastic fruit bags to take the blueberries home in are provided. The field is netted to minimize bird damage to the fruit. A water saving drip irrigation system is used during dry weather. Space is available for a family picnic. Insect repellent, sunscreen, and cold water are available onsite. Tours to see restored farm tractors are possible. The goal is to provide an enjoyable customer experience while picking quality fruit in the Greater Lafayette area. Customer hours are evenings (5:30-9:00 pm) during the week and Saturday mornings (8:00-12:00 noon). Due to inclement weather or a large number of customers who pick out the ripe berries from time to time, the field may be closed occasionally during the two month season, but daily picking conditions may be found on this website or by calling 765 463 4215. Payment for the fruit may be with cash or by check--no credit cards.
