Such a simple task can make the difference should your dog become missing.

-Microchips are wonderful and you don’t have to worry about them falling off like a tag or collar but, your pet has to reach someone with access to a microchip scanner.
-ID tags are awesome but dogs often lose them and I honestly can’t even begin to count the number of times we’ve taken in a dog with a disconnected number on the tag.
-Your pet should always wear their Rabies tag (it’s the law!) but that information can’t be traced if the vet’s office is closed.

All of the above are great ideas but in addition to these…

A good ole Sharpie and about 20 seconds to write your phone number can mean your pet makes it back home quickly should the unthinkable happen. Approximately 50-60% of the stray dogs that come into our shelter have collars but no identification- what’s the point?!

Why is this important?
-If someone finds your pet, they can immediately contact you.
-If Animal Control picks up your pet they may be able to reach out to you without your pet having to come to the shelter in many situations.
-If your pet is found injured, you can be contacted immediately and you can be the one to make medical decisions for you pet and get to them right away.
-The likelihood of being reunited with your pet doubles when your pet has accurate identification.

Something else to consider is that a staggering number of dogs seem to go missing after they have a bath. We experience a large number of owners say “I took his collar off to give him a bath.” To combate this strongly suggest having two collars so your pet can wear one while the other is being washed to avoid such a situation.

Please check at least once monthly to be sure your phone number is still legible and touch up if needed.
Ask your vet to scan your pet’s microchip at your annual appointment to be sure it is still working properly and has no moved.

If you have LOST or FOUND a pet we have a feature available to help create the best opportunity for that pet to get back home. Lost and found pet reports can be accessed through our website. They are both a very simple, fill in the blank document that will ask you to include a photo- 2 people can describe the same pet in 2 very different ways so photos are important.
It’s also important to note that posting on social media- although a useful tool, does not notify animal control or the shelter. Always be sure to complete a report to help get lost or found pets back home.
