ALPHA LIPOIC ACID + COLLAGEN
THE PHYSIOLOGY OF ALPHA LIPOIC ACID and its powerful ANTIOXIDANT effect on the causes of AGEING and the DEGENERATIVE PROCESS of NATURAL AGEING
A geriatric horse in my opinion starts at age 20 (but some 15 year olds have more wear & tear than 20 yr olds)
With age, their aerobic capacity declines and they can develop arthritis, insulin resistance, and changes in body composition and immune function.
The following are the natural degenerative processes associated with ageing
1. Decreased Aerobic Capacity to sustain exercise levels
2. Inability to Thermoregulate body temperature
3. Hormonal Changes
a) blunted response of Cortisol to help body recover from exercise
b) insulin resistance w all its sequelae of Equine Metabolic Syndrome associated problems (obesity, laminitis etc)
4. Inflammation
With age comes a low-grade, chronic state of inflammation, defined as an increase in inflammatory cytokines, senior horses experience called “inflamm-aging.”
5. Lean body mass declines with age and this is primarily due to loss and atrophy of muscle cells.
IN ESSENCE all cells become larger and are less able to divide and multiply. There is an increase in pigments and fatty substances inside the cell (lipids). Many cells lose their ability to function, or they begin to function abnormally..... NOW WITH ALPHA LIPOIC ACID WE CAN SLOW DOWN THESE DELETERIOUS EFECTS ON AGEING CELLS and have our equine companions around for longer w a better quality of life🙏🏼🦄✨
What do old horses die from?
Neoplastic disease (cancer) was the underlying cause of death in 18.7% of horses. The most common types of cancer included squamous cell carcinoma, lymphoma, and melanoma; and. Pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID, or equine Cushing's disease) was the most commonly made specific diagnosis. Which brings me to my next reason for finding ALPHA LIPOIC ACID as a replacement for Permax (PERGOLIDE mesylate) w all its Common side effects of
nausea,
vomiting,
upset stomach,
decreased appetite,
diarrhea
Welcome home our Champion mare "Creme de Cassis" aka Kiki belonging to Melanie Avril Garthwaite who allowed me take her Chelsea Clinic and Spa to her horse at the stand over quarantine station in Touws River, Lettas Kraal🐴😊😍 Giving her a full engine overhaul and rejuve treatment with PRP to nourish her joints after a very competitive and successful showjumping season in Jhb. Tildren is great for prevention and treatment of normal wear and tear of structures involving bone. And last but not least she had the gold standard PENTOSAN POLYSULPHATE which I selectively import from the UK and have clients raving about how awesome their horses are moving and feeling after the treatment. I thoroughly enjoyed getting out into the county side and being reminded what a beautiful country we have👌🏼💚💛🧡🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🦄🐎🐴
Lou Docke my client loves her dairy cows as much as her horses and a call from her at dusk to say Iona gashed open her hindleg got me flying over the mountain to her aid. Luckily it was a clean skin full thickness uncontaminated laceration which will with my surgical closure heal uneventfully. I loved that one of my clients called me "Our very own local James Herriot - but better looking" hahaha - Linda Hennings
A sialolith is a calcified stone within the salivary ducts. The sialolith is formed of an organic nucleus, surrounded by concentric layers of calcium phosphate crystals. In horses the salivary gland involved is usually the parotid gland, and sialoliths usually obstruct the major duct close to the parotid papilla. Surgical removal was pretty cool when I - yes, me assisting a future Veterinary hopeful- assisted client Erin of Lesley Roos to extract this "thing" from her horse Bachelor's cheek. Her is recovering phenomenally and myself and Grant, his groom are going to miss playing with it as it was non painful and intriguing to touch haha
I love imparting knowledge and looking after our future generation of equine Vets🦄🐎🐴😍

Thank you to each and everyone of you who are opening your hearts and contributing so generously towards the care of all the equines currently at the SPCA. The Bay Stallion was reported as stray by a member of the public and was collected by the SPCA as a stray from Beacon Valley on the 15th of May 2017.

BOTULISM is a serious paralytic illness caused by toxins released by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is normally associated with the ingestion of spoiled vegetative matter while grazing, and is sometimes referred to as forage poisoning.
YEARLING "MISS EXCELLENCE" OF MR. WALEED DIRK IN PHILIPPI OF DIRK BROTHERS STABLES EXHIBITED THIS CLINICAL PICTURE ON MY ARRIVAL AT THE STABLES. HER TEMPERATURE WAS NORMAL SO VIRAL/INFECTIOUS CAUSES WERE LESS LIKELY. TOP OF MY LIST OF DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSES WERE:-
1. Botulism (in the unvaccinated horse)
2. Ionophore toxicity (chicken feed)
3. Trauma to the spinal cord
THE PROGNOSIS FOR BOTULISM POISONING REMAINS POOR ONCE THE HORSE IS LYING DOWN ON THEIR SIDE.
😢💀THE NEXT 3-4 DAYS WILL BE CRITICAL FOR THE LITTLE GIRL💀😢. ...........

Happy Monday dear clients and friend.
TAKE HOME MESSAGE: Choke in a horse is ALWAYS a veterinary emergency!!!
THIS IS POOR "CASSIE" AFTER HAVING CHOKED ON HER BREAKFAST AND SADLY ASPIRATED (INHALED) THE SALIVA AND FOOD INTO HER LUNGS. I AM GRATEFUL TO LISA HUGHES FOR PERMITTING ME TO TREAT HER AGGRESSIVELY WITH THREE DIFFERENT RATHER PRICEY ANTIBIOTICS. MY PREVIOUS DEALINGS WITH "CASSIE" HAS PROVEN HER TO BE A STRONG MARE. I BELIEVE SHE WILL PULL THROUGH DESPITE HER SPIKING A TEMPERATURE TONIGHT. KEEP US IN YOUR THOUGHTS-I'LL KEEP YOU GUYS POSTED ON HER PROGRESS. THANK YOU IMHOFF FARM FOR ALWAYS PUTTING THE WELL BEING AND INTERESTS OF YOUR HORSES FIRST!!!
