BLANKETS IN AID OF THE AACL

The best way for you and your fur babies to stay warm this winter is with a gorgeous knitted blanket. What is even better is that by donating towards a blanket, you are able to help the pets in need at the Animal Anti-Cruelty League.

These blankets are on display in the waiting room at TAH Kenridge. Feel free to make us an offer for a donation for a blanket (we suggest a minimum donation of R400).

The donation goes directly to the Animal Anti-Cruelty League Cape Town to provide for the needs of the animals in their care.

Dr Margaret Haddow of TAH Kenridge says, "We love to help the AACL in any way possible. This forms part of our annual campaign to support them throughout the year to fill the gaps, where possible," she adds. “

The AACL relies entirely on the generosity and goodwill of the animal-loving public for financial support.

DENTAL DISEASE IN PETS

Dental care, from a young age, for a pet is crucial, as it can seriously impact a pet’s health. Signs to look out for when you suspect your pet might be suffering from dental disease include:
• Yellow and brown tartar deposits on the gum line.
• Pain can cause behaviour changes e.g. more snappy, quieter and not wanting to exercise as
• Changes in eating habits e.g. chewing on one side of the mouth, dropping food, and not chewing favourite toys.
• Rubbing and or pawing face.
• Pet having difficulty eating.
• Halitosis or bad breath.
• Inflamed, red and/or bleeding gums.
• Tumours in the gums.
• Cysts under the gums.
• Loose teeth.
• Swollen and bleeding gums.
• Cats may exhibit increased drooling.
• Reluctance to play with favourite toys.
• Failure to groom themselves.

INVENTION OF THE TOOTHBRUSH

On 26 June 1498 the toothbrush was invented by a Chinese Emperor, and his wife, Empress Wanrong, introduced it to the world.

The handle was made out of bamboo or animal bone and then pig hair was used for the bristles. The bristles were much harder than today's toothbrushes, but they did a better job of cleaning the teeth than a frayed stick.

The first pet toothbrush was only developed much later and emphasised the need for humans and pets to look after their teeth.
