Recently we posted about the exciting new addition to the practice and here it is! We can now offer dental radiographs as part of your pet's dental procedure and oral health care.

Unfortunately, dogs and cats cannot tell us which tooth hurts or is diseased. Some animals don't show they are in pain, even if they are. In some cases, dental radiographs are the only way to get an accurate idea of the health of the tooth as you are able to visualize what is happening below the gum line (comparable to an iceberg, what you see above may be very different to what lies below). A tooth may look healthy at first glance but there could be severe bone loss, for example, which could result in a missed opportunity to greatly improve your pet's health and quality of life. Dental xrays can reveal information about infection, bone loss, reabsorption of the tooth or cracked roots. A picture truly is worth 1000 words!

Please note dental radiographs can only be done while the patient is under general anaesthetic. If you are concerned about the state of your pet's mouth, please do bring them in for a thorough examination with one of our vets who will then be able to advise you on the best way forward.

28 September is ! The theme for this year is “Breaking Boundaries”.

Remember, all mammals can get infected by rabies. The common signs of rabies are changes in behaviour and neurological symptoms, which may include the following:

✅ Excessive salivation
✅ Paralysis
✅ Inability to swallow
✅ Continuous vocalisation
✅ Convulsions
✅ Aggression
✅ Non-responsive behaviour

Report any suspected rabid animals immediately to your state or private veterinarian, an animal health technician or the police.

Are your dogs and cats up to date with their rabies vaccinations? Protect them and yourself!

Nothing like a good before and after dental!

Basil the beagle came in for a dental scale and polish and any necessary extractions. Although there is still some staining as he is an older chap, he definitely went home with a happier and healthier mouth.

As much as we all love our pooches, today is the day to show them a little extra appreciation as we celebrate the bond between man and man's best friend.

The slobbery kisses, the muddy footprints through the door together with all the fur/doggy glitter, the holes that spontaneously appear in the garden, the socks that disappear or the barking for no apparent reason may make us sigh at times but we can all agree that we wouldn't trade it for anything.

Dogs of all shapes and sizes, purebreds and pavement specials, working dogs and companions; all provide us with an absolute unconditional love that we should never take for granted.

Go ahead, give your pooch that extra treat, scratch behind the ears or throw the ball a few extra times while you take a moment to appreciate all that your dog(s) give you and how much extra value they bring to your life.

As always, we would love to see some photos of your canine best friends!

Early morning fracture repair in theater for Dr Tim, assisted by Dr Sam. Stephen was on hand to assist with any additional products that are needed, as once the doctors are scrubbed up they need to keep themselves and the surgical field sterile. Sr Kirstin was monitoring the anaesthetics and keeping record of what was used.

The patient is doing well but will need to spend a bit more time with us in the hospital to ensure she gets adequate cage rest and controlled walks before going home in a few days time.

Edit: it was a mielie/corn cob! 🌽🌽🌽 we regularly have to take dogs into surgery to remove them as they are the perfect size to get stuck and cause problems.

Any guesses as to what foreign body is in the kidney dish?

Dogs (and cats) can get up to mischief and get hold of things they aren't supposed to. Sometimes, these items get stuck somewhere in the gut and we have to remove them surgically while the patient is under a general anaesthetic.

The item below was removed from a Labrador, but is definitely one of the most common items that dogs swallow that we need to remove.

This particular one was about 3cm long and roughly 2cm in diameter.

The face you make when you see how your ID/passport/driver's licence photo came out🙄

Coco the gorgeous chocolate labrador is a regular visitor to the hospital and when she came in a few days ago we noticed that this special lady had a birthday coming up....today this grand old lady turn 15 YEARS OLD! This is a great age, especially for a large dog, so we knew we had to mention it. Only problem is, despite her cute pose, the nurse clearly didn't take a photo to do her justice🙈 we will have to call it a lack of communication between nurse and patient!

Despite the photo not being picture perfect; we would still like to wish Coco a very happy birthday!

Happy international cat day!

Today is the day we celebrate and appreciate all the wonderful cats that fill up the feline shaped hole in our lives; to commemorate that special bond that forms between humans and cats. At BHVH we get to meet all breeds and kitties that all have their own personalities; from cute and cuddly to feisty and a little extra spicy!

We would love to see some photos of the cats that own you and rule the household!

This gorgeous chap, snuggling in his dad's arms, is called Dash. Dash had surgery last week and he came in today for a check up with Dr Lynsey. He is trying to get at his sutures so will have to continue wearing his soft buster collar for a little while longer. Luckily this is a slightly more comfortable (and fun!) alternative to the more traditional cones of shame!

The 2024 Summer Olympics are well under way in Paris and that has us wondering...🤔

Would your pet have what it takes to be an Olympic athlete and bring home the gold? Or are they more of a cheerleader; giving extra motivation and encouragement from the comfort of their bed?

Would your flexible feline excel on the balance beam in gymnastics or would your greyhound be ready to take on the 100m sprint? Could your labrador be in the swim team or is does your spunky crossbreed look like they would be a skateboarding pro?

Let's have some fun and let us know which sport you think your pet would compete in!

Happy Friday from some of the BHVH team!

Lena and Joanne have been keeping things moving at reception; assisting clients and answering the phones. The nursing team of Kirstin, Megan and Monika have been busy with anaesthetics, radiographs, patient care and treatments, pawdicures and running diagnostics while getting medication ordered and other necessary admin. Dr Lynsey, Dr Iuree and Dr Tim can be found doing surgical procedures, overseeing their in-hospital patients and consultations where clients have brought in their pets for a number of different reasons. Sekan, Robert, Farai and Michael are assisting vets and nurses, helping keep patients clean, comfortable and fed and ensuring the hospital is kept clean and tidy while Dr Angela is out and about seeing to our equine patients.

The rest of our staff are enjoying some much needed time off and well deserved leave while office dogs Brody, Smudge, Moxie and Maggie enjoy a morning snooze amongst all the action!

The vets and nurses were treated to some really comfy and funky scrubs by our friends at Zoetis

The 'tail' of a lucky little scruffy dog.

In May, this little guy was found injured on the side of the road, presumably after being hit by a car. He was taken to a nearby vet where multiple fractures were found.

After initial stabilization he was sent to us to see what we could do. Radiographs taken under sedation confirmed severe pelvic fractures, fractures in both femurs and a fractured fibula.

The lady who found him, together with some more good samaritans, raised much needed funds for potential surgeries and ongoing treatment and were determined to get him back on his feet and into a loving home.

We initially expected that an amputation of one of the hindlimbs was inevitable, and he was even named Tommy Tripod in expectation. After some deliberation, a decision was made to try and save both legs through surgery. He had multiple surgeries, including a neuter, over the course of a couple of weeks.

He spent more than 6 weeks with us in hospital to ensure he was strictly cage rested. He got into the hospital routine and became quite cheeky as he started to feel better and recover! His new mom, and the ladies that found him, were regular visitors throughout his stay.

Last week Timmy (renamed since he still had all 4 limbs) went home and the whole hospital staff was treated to some yummy treats from his new adoptive mom, Debbie. Veterinary medicine involves a whole team of people from the vets and nurses, animal assistants, and those at reception and in the office who keep things ticking over behind the scenes; who all played a vital role in getting Timmy treated and were extremely appreciative of something yummy!

Timmy still has a long road ahead as he continues his recovery and physiotherapy. We wish him all the best and are so grateful to all who gave this cheeky chap a second chance.
