Meet 'Vlooi' 🐾

Don't be fooled by that innocent face! 😄

Vlooi, a curious young Dachshund whose name means 'Flea' in Afrikaans, recently got herself into a bit of trouble. She managed to sneakily ingest some human medication without her owners' permission.

Thankfully, her vigilant owners noticed quickly, and after consulting with our team, it was clear that what she had ingested could be toxic given her small size. So, Vlooi was rushed to our hospital for immediate treatment.

In cases like these, our first step is often to induce emesis (vomiting) to expel the ingested substance. This is achieved through a safe injection that stimulates the brain to trigger a vomiting response.

After successfully clearing her stomach, Vlooi remained under our care for monitoring. She received IV fluids to support hydration and aid in flushing out any remaining toxins. To further neutralise any lingering medication, Vlooi was given activated charcoal, as shown in the picture, mixed with tasty food in a syringe for easy administration.

Activated charcoal acts like a sponge, absorbing any leftover toxins in the stomach, even after vomiting.

Thanks to quick action and the teamwork between her owners and our veterinary staff, Vlooi avoided any major toxicity and was happily reunited with her family. We hope she's learned her lesson about what's appropriate to snack on! (Though we have our doubts! 😄)

How cute is little 'Arlo'!

Arlo, the sweetest little Golden Retriever puppy, came in to us for treatment after hours recently after his parents had noticed he was having a bit of an upset belly and some vomiting.

For any young puppy, when they are lethargic and unwell, early supportive care is very important as they can very quickly dehydrate and deteriorate.

No one likes being unwell, having to have needles and treatment and stay away from home overnight, so lots of extra love and cuddles are given throughout the night so Arlo will hopefully forgive us for the needles and come back in the future if need be with no fear or hesitation!

After lots of love, some medications and some IV fluids overnight with us, Arlo was feeling much better and back home with his family in the morning 🥰

Receptionist Kandice and feathered helper 'Arnie' 🤍

Arnie belongs to one of our lovely administrators and considers himself as an important staff member here.

He finds himself hitch-hiking around the hospital from one friend to another for little visits.

Often our staff will bring their pets in for a day at work with mum or dad and every staff member adopts them in as their own.

This is all part of what brings us joy on the hard days and keeps us all united as one big family!

Poor Honey the 1 year old Kelpie, got herself into a bit of a 'sticky' situation when she found herself caught up with a stick stuck across the roof of her mouth.

Luckily, with a little bit of sedation to help her relax and enable the team to get up close, open her mouth and remove the foreign object, Honey is now stick free and will recover with no harm done (other than maybe stressing out her fur parents)

What sort of antics has your puppy gotten up to??

Dr Kareena and Kuta 🐾

Kuta, the adorable 9 week old Bull Arab cross, captured having a little cuddle after her Puppy Health Check and Vaccination.

We vaccinate puppies against three core diseases: Canine Distemper, Canine Hepatitis and Canine Parvovirus.

These vaccines are considered core because if there was to be an outbreak, these diseases are quickly widespread, highly contagious, and can cause severe illness or fatality in infected puppies. Unfortunately, across WA, we frequently see outbreaks of Parvovirus and the damaging effects that has on unvaccinated canines.

Vaccination against these diseases is crucial for protecting the health and well-being of puppies just like little Kuta and preventing the spread of these pathogens within the dog population.

Well done for being so brave Kuta!

Snuggles and Support for Rio and Maggie 🐾

Meet Rio the 12 week old Tenterfield Terrier (Pictured right with Jannee) and Maggie the 12 week old Dachshund (Pictured left with Rebecca).

Both puppies, belonging to different families, visited our Advanced Surgery Centre on the same day for some radiographs. On separate occasions these boisterous little puppies had gotten themselves into some trouble resulting in a sore leg.

Whilst they were admitted and the Advanced Surgery team were in surgery with other patients, our administration team stepped in to keep them company, making sure they were resting and not feeling scared or lonely.

We believe it's crucial to nurture a positive relationship with all of our patients, especially young puppies, to ensure they feel secure and confident, and are never left frightened to enter unfamiliar environments like our hospital.

This also is a highlight to our administration teams day, regardless of their duty, all of our team members are involved in the love and the care of our patients 🤍

Baileys Story 🤍

Today we celebrate a very special patient, whom just two weeks ago was was facing a very different story.

Our clinic received a call from a very worried parent of Bailey, a 7yr old Border Collie whom at around 8 PM that night was found paralysed. With a tiger snake seen just nearby Baileys body they knew they needed to seek immediate emergency treatment. With every second counting, Bailey's family rushed her to us, despite all odds and being over an hour away, they made it in.

As Bailey arrived, she was in a dire state, struggling to breathe and in severe distress. We were ready and waiting, she was rushed through to hospital and immediate treatment was begun.

Bailey was intubated and placed under anesthetic to ensure we could provide oxygen, medications and ultimately stop her body from shutting down further. Once under anesthesia , treatment, shock IV fluids and antivenom can be administered to counteract the venoms continuing attack on her body. Her condition was critical, but our team would do everything possible for her.

Throughout the night, our team worked tirelessly, monitoring Bailey's vital signs and adjusting treatment as needed. Despite setbacks and moments of uncertainty, Bailey showed remarkable strength. Slowly but surely, her condition improved, and by dawn, she was bought out of her induced coma and was awake and responsive.

In the days that followed, Bailey continued to defy the odds, regaining mobility and enjoying small comforts. With each passing day, she grew stronger, thanks to the unwavering love and dedication of her family and the team.

Today, we're thrilled to share that Bailey is thriving at home, her spirit unbroken by the challenges she faced. Her journey is a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of never giving up hope.

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to Bailey's family for entrusting us with her care and allowing us to be part of her incredible journey. Thankyou also for the lovely honey gifted to the team
