Chickens have some pretty clever ways of beating the winter chill, but they may still need your help. Like all birds, chickens use their feathers for insulation by fluffing them up and trapping the air. But for the times when nature is hard to predict, good pet care involves providing appropriate refuge.

❄️Insulation❄️
In cold parts of Australia, you could insulate your chicken coop with tree branches, cardboard, or straw. Care should be taken if hay or straw is used for insulation, as these can become infested with mold and vermin and carry chicken parasites. Also, remember to keep the insulation tidy. Keeping the coop clean and dry is essential as most bacteria, fungi, and parasites thrive in warm, moist environments.

☀️Warmer climates☀️
If you live in one of the warmer Australian states then you probably won’t need to install insulation in your chicken coop at all. Open, ventilated coops are more important. Learn more tips on coop setup on our website, or alternatively, visit your local Greencross Vets for expert advice.

Winter is here! We feel it's going to be a super cold one, and chances are if you are feeling cold your furry friend is too.

Here are some ways to keep your pet warm in the Winter:

💚Keep your pet inside
💚Provide a warm, soft, elevated bed
💚Warm coats are great for pets that are senior, small or have thin coats
💚Move your guinea pigs hutch inside the house or garage
💚Provide extra straw and hay so small pets can burrow and hide
💚Keep all bedding dry
💚Wrap a loose blanket over your pet, but don’t tuck them in. They still need to be able to move away from it if they overheat
💚Walk your furry friend during the day when it’s not as cold

At Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) Gosford, several beloved pets have tragically lost their lives due to severe tick paralysis. Dr. Natashia Evans, an Emergency and Critical Care Specialist at ARH Gosford, emphasises the importance of year-round parasite prevention, even as we transition into winter.

Skipping prevention can lead to devastating consequences.
Even a delay of just one or two days can put your pet at risk. Set reminders, and if in doubt, administer prevention a couple of days early.

💚 As winter sets in and the temperature drops, vets often see an increase in arthritis cases in both young and old animals. Sadly, the majority of these pets go undiagnosed and untreated as their owners don’t understand the reality of this condition. However, pets experience real pain with arthritis, comparable to the pain experienced by humans with this disease.

🎅 Santa is coming to City Farmers Baldivis 🎅

Bring your pooch in to the store on Sunday the 15th of December and take some photos of them with Santa. This is a free event, however you need to take the photos. There will be no photographer present. No bookings are required, just come on in!

The darling Moo is a staff favourite here at Greencross Vets Baldivis (obviously, look how cute that face is 🥰).
Last week poor Moo had to have a general anaesthetic & x-rays on her sore leg. Luckily her lameness seemed to be soft tissue related and no surgery was required, and she got lots of cuddles from nurse Rachel while she woke up from her anaesthetic!

Today Moo had her recheck appointment with Dr Cathy and was back to her normal, cuddly self & happy to be able to go on walks again!

Why attend our puppy school?

Our puppy school is one of the best constructed classes in Perth! It is designed and conducted by professional dog trainer Melissa Plonski from Totally Pawsible. The program is under Dr Cathy Lau’s supervision who has a special interest in veterinary behaviour medicine, ensuring that you and your puppy are receiving the most relevant and up to date knowledge on dog behaviour and training.

At what age can my puppy start puppy school?

As soon as you get your puppy, which is generally around 8 weeks old. You should start planning and enquiring about the dates of puppy school before your puppy arrives.
There is only a very short window for puppies to learn social behaviour, which is 4-12 weeks of age. This is the time we call the “sensitive period” for socialisation, where your puppy’s brain is actively developing and learning “how to communicate with people and other animals appropriately”. Experiences your puppy has during this period will have a profound effect on its future behaviour.

Does my puppy need to be fully vaccinated to attend puppy school?

No, they do not. Most puppies receive their final vaccination at 16 weeks of age, which is way past the sensitive period for socialisation.
We assure that all the puppies attending our classes are healthy, and our venue is cleaned appropriately on a daily basis to minimise potential exposure to infectious diseases!

💚 MEET OUR TEAM 💚
Rachel Gray - Registered Veterinary Nurse

Rachel grew up on her family’s 3000 acre farm down south and as a child she always had a large assortment of pets such as dogs, cats, horses, lambs, a calf and even emus! Every spare moment Rachel had would be spent riding her horses or bottle raising her orphan lambs, so from a young age she always knew she wanted to make her passion for animals into a career.

Rachel graduated Applied Vocational Training with her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing in 2017 and has been lucky enough to work for Greencross since completing her studies. In 2018 she gained her Low Stress Handling silver certificate and loves being able to make your pets visit to the vet as stress free as possible.

Rachel has a special interest in anaesthetics and has completed further training in anaesthesia and surgical analgesia through the Australian College of Veterinary Nursing to make sure your pets are in the safest hands possible when they come in to our clinic for surgery.

Rachel also has a soft spot for greyhounds since recently adopting two of her own named Fin & Liv. She also has a cheeky adopted cat named Wolfe who was handed in to Greencross Baldivis as a stray kitten!

Rehina Gill - Practice Manager, Registered Veterinary Nurse

Rehina grew up in New Zealand with an array of animals including dogs, cats, rabbits, fish, birds, chickens, sheep and a goat. Rehina’s love for animals was evident at a very young age and she always knew that she wanted a career with animals.

Rehina moved to Perth in 2008 with her dog ‘Boy’, after graduating with her Nursing qualification from the School of Natural Sciences at Unitec in Auckland. Since then, she has worked in general practice, an emergency center and a Veterinary teaching hospital. Rehina has also worked in a nursing school, mentoring and lecturing future Veterinary Nurses. In 2017 Rehina acquired her Low Stress Handling certification to help her patients have stress-free experience at the vets.

Rehina has a passion for offering the absolute gold standard of patient and client care. She enjoys learning about the latest protocols so she can implement the best and most current medical and surgical care to her patients. Rehina is devoted to animal welfare and is an advocate for the equal treatment of all animals.

Rehina has a beautiful 10 year old Beagle named Harlow, an 11 year old ginger cat named Ava who is a total sweetheart, and a one year old seal point cat named Harry who is extremely cheeky.
