uires have been collecting animals for display since 1964 when they purchased the Cairns Baths and converted them to an oceanarium and displayed the animals of the Great Barrier Reef to the public for the first time. Today, the company operates three fully customised 22m vessels collecting under strict licensing and fisheries management conditions from the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea. Specimens are kept at our custom built holding and husbandry facility in Cairns, Mackay and Darwin which are distributed across Australia and around the world.

Showcasing a stunning aberrant angelfish Cairns Marine recently collected unexpectedly in the rough weather. Hiding behind the reef, one of our most experienced divers “Bondy” who has a keen eye for unique fish managed to secure this specimen. This RARE and beautiful Centropyge bispinosa or Coral Beauty was collected in the lagoon at flora reef at a depth of 12 metres. Wind, rain or shine we really appreciate the hard efforts our divers put into collecting these amazing animals.

It is with a heavy heart that we share the sad news of the passing of Fenton Walsh.

Fenton was a pioneer of marine aquarium fish collecting in Australia and his contributions to the industry are far reaching. Fenton had a passion for ichthyology and described many new species of fish and provided numerous contributions to the Australian and Queensland Museums.

I have been fortunate to know Fenton for over 20 years and worked alongside him for around 15 at Cairns Marine. I first learnt of Fenton from Mike Lark who my brother and I both dived for, collecting fish. I heard about him finding the first Rhinopias aphanes in Cairns, and collecting fish in faraway exotic locations in the remote Pacific. He was doing and had done things I could only dream of doing! He was very much a creature of legend, and an inspiration.

It took another 10 years before I actually met Fenton. I can honestly say he was one of the most humble people I know. Just a very special and genuine person with an incomprehensible knowledge of all things marine.... including the aquarium industry. Fenton’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.

We wish to pass on our sincere condolences to Fenton's family. May loving memories bring you strength and comfort during this difficult time.

Pseudanthias engelhardorum or the Barrier Reef Basslet/Golden eye anthia are considered a deep water species that is uncommon in the aquarium industry. Reaching a max size of around 10cm they make a peaceful and colourful addition to marine tanks. This beautiful specimen shown in this photo is a great example of a male whilst females are solid pink with golden eyes. We have a nice school of these currently at the facility so get in contact with Mel or David for more information about these awesome fish.

Cirrhilabrus scottorum, also known as the rainbow fairy wrasse or Scott’s wrasse. These vibrant specimens were collected on our most recent expedition to the CoralSea. Presently this species of fairy wrasse is still considered one of the most colourful species of wrasse in the Aquarium hobby. As a species that lives naturally in the middle of the water column, they tick all the boxes and make a great addition to any system looking to add something more active and interactive.

The team had a busy couple days at The Pet Show Sydney! Our Super star Mel was a hit with her Nemo costume and face painting talents! We spent the last couple of days educating about sustainable collection and sharing our passion for marine life.

We have seahorses in stock! Check out these adorable Long Snout seahorses (H.reidi) hanging out together. We have a great selection of other captive bred seahorses, such as the spotted (H. kuda), the Big belly (H. abdominalis) and the Barbour”s seahorse (H. barbouri). Most people who observe sea pens would think they don’t do much at all. But this timelapse video demonstrates how it inflates to its full size. If you look closely you can also see all of the brittle stars and porcelain crabs scuttling all over it (check our post from last week about these). It incredible to see the amount of activity going on. This one stands approximately 60cm’s high. If you would like something out of the ordinary to feature in your tank, this could be something to attract loads of attention. It's not every day that an incredible specimen such as this Tiger Shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) graces our facility. We captured some footage of this young shark being fed by our dedicated Elasmobranch team. Hexabranchus sanguineus or the Spanish dancer nudibranch is considered one of the most recognised sea slugs due to the undulated swimming action they display when disturbed. They are considered one of the largest species with records of over 30cm in size! They commonly range in colour from bright orange to red however a few yellow specimens have been found in Hawaii and Tanzania. Aren’t these guys just majestic!

How do you safely move a 100 kg Ray? This stunning Black Blotch Fantail Ray is 1.4 meters across the disc and around 100kg. Destined for the largest public aquarium in the world in the Middle East. After a quick bath to knock off any parasites the ray was introduced to its short term holding tank.

Who said Sharks can’t be trained? One of the very cool benefits of working at Cairns Marine is being able to work with amazing creatures like these Zebra Sharks. We are fortunate to work with such incredible diversity!
