***PARALYSIS TICK WARNING***

Unfortunately we have recently seen a cases of tick paralysis in a pony. This is earlier than expected in the season. The effects of paralysis ticks are more commonly seen in young foals and small ponies, due to their size. Large breed adult horses are normally immune to the effects of paralysis ticks, but they can become a problem if the horse is immunocompromised, or if large numbers of ticks are present.

Symptoms of paralysis tick toxicity include general lethargy, weakness or wobbliness, respiratory difficulties, food regurgitation, and recumbency (lying down).
Ponies and foals should be checked on a daily basis for ticks, and if you have any questions or concerns call the clinic on (07) 5574 2466.

Ticks are commonly found around the face and muzzle, on the belly, and between the legs. The best way to find ticks is to run your hands over the horse, and any lumps and bumps found should be investigated.
To prevent the occurrence of ticks on your property slash long grass and tall weeds, and remove leaf litter. To prevent ticks getting on your horse avoid feeding and watering under trees. Consider clipping the horse if it has a long coat, to ease examination for ticks. Permoxin spray is the only licensed tick treatment in horses, and can be used weekly. No management protocols are completely effective against paralysis ticks, so daily checking for paralysis ticks is highly recommended.

If you have any questions or concerns with regards to paralysis ticks in horse, please phone the clinic on (07) 5574 2466
