Ok, hold onto your hats for this one! 🀩

Meet Pam the bunny! Gorgeous Pam has severe middle ear disease and as a result she developed some facial paralysis and as you can imagine, having sore ears is not comfortable.

After a remote consultation with our brilliant vet Dr Kate Harmon and The Rabbit Doctors in Melbourne, Dr Kate was able to commence some great treatments.

Regardless, the best option for Pam was to travel to Melbourne for a CT scan and subsequent surgery to remove part of her ear canal.

What a journey in both senses of the word! This gorgeous bunny has taken it all in her stride! Recently we removed her sutures and she is amazing!! She heads back to the Rabbit Doctors in July for her other ear to be sorted.

What we do for animals is truly amazing, the bond we have and the true intensity of love we share for all creatures great and small is so plain to see. We see it everyday in our job.

A huge shout out to Pam's mum who was by her side the whole time. πŸ₯°β€οΈπŸ’•πŸ’ž You are amazing!

**PUPPY SPAM ALERT**

Meet lovely Mo, the beautiful golden retriever. Mo presented with some issues giving birth so we had to help this lovely lady by performing a caesarian.

With just two pups on board, we took her to surgery and they got to meet the world!! They were certainly little whoppers!! πŸ˜†

Next you can see Mandy's 12 puppies! Mandy is a beautiful Kelpie who managed to birth these little trouble makers all by herself!! 🀣 No doubt these babies have been up to some mischief that mum has had to manage!! Well done Mandy, we are super proud of you for doing an amazing job!! They are stunning pups!

So whilst our job is not always about puppies and kittens, sometimes it actually is!!

As you can see, some fun was had!! Thanks to all owners for allowing these pictures to be taken. ❀️❀️

Today is World Veterinary Day! I would like to take this moment to thank each one of my wonderful vets who continue to go above and beyond for all our wonderful patients.

The dedication they show to their craft and unwavering care is truly amazing. As you may know, this profession is struggling with a shortage of veterinarians worldwide and we are acutely aware of the effects this has on our animals and clients.

I want to acknowledge the struggles that the veterinary world faces. A high su***de rate, high levels of stress and extreme working conditions. At times over the years, my colleagues and I have been told we are only in it for the money. We are not, and we are truly here to help. It can be comments like these that honestly break a person. For me, this has been the hardest part of the job because my dream of becoming a vet was all down to the love of the animals, like all of my colleagues. It might be a clichΓ© but it’s true 😊.

The joy of the new puppy or kitten to the final farewell of a beloved pet – we see it all. We experience this journey with you and it is truly a joy to be a part of it.

I am so proud of my team and everything they do. We are here for you and your pets. I am so sorry that I don’t have pictures of everyone, but you know who you all are!! 😊

Thank you for reading this post. Thank you for being kind and above all, thank you for choosing us to be your vets and nurses. It is a privilege to care for your beloved pets.

With much appreciation, Dr Jen Griffiths & the Pets Life Team xx

Life is all about celebrations, right? Sometimes we face huge challenges that really test us. Sometimes that journey is not an easy one but the rewards at the end are worth it! πŸ™‚

Well, meet the lovely Beans. Her journey began nearly 5 months ago. A diagnosis of Lymphoma (a malignant cancer) meant that this wonderful lady had quite the challenge on her paws!

A gruelling 5 months of chemotherapy and this beautiful lady gets to celebrate her remission.

There is no doubt that this has been a journey full of many highs and some tough times that Beans has had to overcome. Regardless, this girl has shown so much resilience and our hearts are so full of love and joy for her.

To watch her leave the clinic with her mum and dad and get to have a break from us is so good to see. Beans will have to be monitored carefully. Nobody knows what the future holds but for now she gets to keep on living her best life that she so truly deserves. πŸ’• πŸ₯°πŸ˜˜

As the festive season is upon us, you will have seen our updated hours of operation.

For those on long term medication please ensure you have enough medication for your pets over this holiday season.

We require at least 48hrs notice in order to get this all ready for you. Writing and preparing prescriptions can take some time when we have so many, therefore we ask you give us as much notice as possible 😊.

If your pet is on a special order medication please ensure you make contact with us within the next week so we can ensure the medication arrives in time.

Please understand, if medications are requested for same day pick up that we may not be able to fill this if our veterinarians are busy consulting or in surgery.

Thank you for your understanding.

Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and a happy new year! πŸ₯°πŸ˜ŠπŸŽ„

Meet Hugo, our most recent super star!

Hugo presented to us very unwell. He had been vomiting and was not wanting to eat food! As many of you may know, that is a little bit unusual for a Golden Retriever!

We proceeded to investigate Hugo's issues by initially performing xrays. Upon examining this lovely boy, who is normally a ball of energy, we found him to be very flat and lethargic 😞.

His xrays were suspicious and suggested that Hugo had a bowel obstruction. We took him straight to surgery that afternoon, and found way more than we bargained for!

Poor Hugo, not only did he have an obstruction in multiple places, he also had two holes in his bowel that were now leaking into his abdomen. This is a serious and life threatening complication.

As a result, Dr Jen and Nurse Barbara and along with an amazing anaesthetic team, nurse Haylee, Emma and Lauren a large portion of his small intestine was removed and we also had to cut into his stomach to remove the rest of the object that he had eaten!

Hugo's owners knew that his life now hung in balance as this was a much more complicated situation for Hugo than we originally thought. Hugo's owners had faith in their boy and if there was a chance we could save him, they wanted to give him that chance.

Well, two weeks later, I got to take out his sutures and this lovely boy gets to return to normal life!!!! We will want to monitor him carefully as he gets back to normal but so far this boy has done nothing but amaze us!

Happy Christmas beautiful boy! Back with your gorgeous family, right where you belong! πŸ₯°πŸ˜πŸŽ…

Feline Vaccine Shortage

**Australia is currently experiencing a nationwide shortage of feline vaccines**

The University of Sydney – Centre for Veterinary Education has released the following guidelines:

1. Postpone vaccination of older cats

2. Doing 2 vaccinations of kittens at 12-14 weeks and 16-18 weeks

As we are running low on vaccinations, we will be following these guidelines until more can be obtained.

The current estimated time is currently February 2024 when stocks should be more readily available.

We still advise that more senior cats present for their annual health check to ensure they are remaining in the best of health and in order to highlight any other changes that may have occurred in your feline. Older cats are considered to still have immunity so this will not affect our cats until stocks become available.

We greatly appreciate your understanding during this trying time and we ensure we are working as hard as we can to minimize the impact these shortages have on our pets and clients.

Best wishes, Pets Life Vet Care

Sometimes, there are emergencies that worry us all.
Non other than "bloat" or gastric dilatation volvulus (GDV). As a pet owner this one is a big fear for those that own larger breed dogs (although not exclusive to large breeds interestingly πŸ€”).

GDV can occur spontaneously but risk factors such as feeding followed by exercise can lead to the stomach twisting on its axis. As a result the stomach becomes bloated like a drum and blood supply to the stomach is severely compromised. Along with this, the spleen (joined to the stomach) can become twisted too.

As things progress, severe cardiovascular compromise occurs and this condition is invariably fatal if not treated quickly.

Even with the best will in the world and prompt surgical intervention there is no guarantee with these patients. This is such a life threatening condition that sometimes we just don't know how things will turn out.

Enter Zorro........ such a lovely, kind German Shepherd who presented to Dr Jen as an emergency on a weekend. His owner noticed that Zorro was not quite right and acting differently. He immediately suspected bloat and was referred to Dr Jen.

An X-ray was taken and confirmed our worst fears - GDV. With the help of our incredible nurse Emma, Dr Jen took Zorro to surgery. Zorro had to have his spleen removed, stomach deflated and returned back to the normal position. The stomach was then sutured into place to try and prevent this ever happening again.

Living up to his name as quite the hero, this boy's recovery was incredible. He wanted to eat his breakfast the next morning like nothing had happened!!! πŸ˜‚

Zorro has continued to recover, gain back his great condition and continue living his best life. Sometimes, it is truly unreal what our pets are capable of and how they bounce back! Well done Zorro! πŸ₯°πŸ˜

Born and raised in the idyllic Isle of Man (home of the TT races for those of you who love motorsport!), she graduated from the Royal Veterinary College, London, UK in 2009 and began her career in mixed practice in rural South Australia. Jen and her husband moved to Tasmania in 2016 to enjoy a rural lifestyle with their menagerie and the business officially opened on the 11 December 2017.
