Introducing our new online course 'Preparing Your Dog for a New Baby'! 🐶👶

In this course, you'll learn everything you need to know to prepare and train your dog for your little one's arrival.

You’ll see Tim working with our clients, as they prepare their dogs for the baby coming home. You will see us teach their dogs key commands and essential skills, and watch how we introduce their dogs and babys for the first time.

📝 The course includes just under half an hour of video content, divided into 6 short modules (because we know you’ll be busy!) as well as an an accompanying workbook and PDF resources.

There’s many ways to go about this safely before your dog is fully vaccinated. It’s far too important for a puppy’s long term confidence and well-being, to be kept home during these critical early weeks.

It’s very common for puppy classes to focus strongly on teaching obedience skills. On the other hand, puppy development is about FAR more than teaching a puppy to sit, drop, hold stays, or shake hands.

So where do we start?

🧠 Teaching puppies how to learn and that learning is fun
⏳ Habituation and socialisation
🗣️ Clear markers for communication
🚀 Play and engagement
💪 Independence

It’s not that obedience isn’t important. It’s just that those 10 commands you taught in a week watching YouTube videos aren’t going to be all that helpful if you don’t have the necessary foundations in place to help your pup succeed in the world you’ve committed to raising them in.

Puppy training doesn’t stop after puppy school.

Grace and Teddy have been working with us to further develop their obedience, build confidence, and create neutrality to dogs and people.

Putting in the right foundations with a young dog has a huge impact on the overall trainability, well-being, and adaptability of that dog as an adult.

Heading to the park this weekend?

As the weather warms up, more and more people like to bring their dogs with them to public places. That’s part of the enjoyment of owning a dog.

But if like us, you plan on taking your dog with you, here are 4 tips to help you navigate the park scene responsibly:

🐕 Leash Up Where Required - Check whether you're visiting a dog off-leash area. If not, keep your dog on lead. If your dog's recall is not proofed under distraction, a 5m long line gives your dog a lot of room to run, without running into trouble.

🤝 Respect Other Park-Goers - Remember that not everyone at the park loves your dog as much as you do. Swapping off lead play with other dogs for play with you that your dog enjoys can provide you a lot of benefits especially if your dog finds it difficult to listen to you when around other dogs or people.

🗑️ Pick Up After Your Dog - If you own a dog, it is your responsibility to clean up after them. We recommend carrying at least 2 bags with you at all times. If you forget your bag, you can get one from a dog poo bag dispenser in your local park.

💧Keep Your Dog Cool - High temperatures can be tough on your dog. Make sure your dog stays hydrated and always check the temperature of the footpath with the back of your hand. Take care of your dog in the heat, and if the weather is above 30 degrees, opt for early morning or late evening visits when it's cooler.

Long lines are a must-have when letting your dog off-leash when their recall isn’t proofed under distraction.

We all want our dogs to have the freedom to run and have a good time but letting them off lead before they are ready sets them up to fail and puts them and others at risk.

Last week we said goodbye to a beloved friend and companion 💔

Inka was owned by our very dear friends Kasia & Dane. She was a loyal friend to Elliott and a source of boundless love to everyone who met her. She featured a lot over the years on our socials, our website, and our TVC with Square.

Whilst Inka had a very average start to life, beaches, and parks became her playgrounds, and she reveled in the freedom of dog-friendly trails with Kasia by her side. Inka become a ‘go anywhere, do anything’ kind of dog - the kind of dog that so many talk about owning or aspiring to train their dog to be.

We still laugh when remembering the time she led Elliott astray, finding her way into our kitchen whilst we were out and leaving a trail of pantry items from the back door to the front.

Inka, you will be deeply missed, but your spirit lives on in the adventures you shared and the love you gave. Our hearts go out to Kasia & Dane, knowing their house will be very quiet right now.

Hold your old dogs tight guys, they’re not with us for nearly long enough 🌈🐕❤️

How do you stop a puppy jumping? If you’re going to let people say hi to your puppy, use it as an opportunity to teach your puppy how you want them to interact. With a bit of management in place, jumping is easy to prevent at this age. ✅ Condition a terminal marker (YES or clicker) ✅ Place your dog on lead ✅ Mark YES or click at the precise moment they say hi so your puppy comes running back to you for reinforcement. It’s helpful to walk people though what you want them to do and not do too!

Advocating for your dog also means teaching them what to do in situations when you can’t. The dog in this video, Ben, was left tied up outside of rural pound in NSW at 5 months of age. He lived in the pound for 3 months before @TOFPAU found him and brought him to VIC. Ben is uncomfortable with new people and displays strong defensive responses when approached. His awesome foster carers have made a start on working on improving his overall obedience and confidence which includes stepping in for him when and if his space is invaded. Clever management and training will improve a dog like Ben’s chance at adoption. #dogtraining #melbournedogtrainer #rescuedogsofinstagram
