Did you know grapes (including sultanas, and raisins) are potentially toxic to dogs? While some dogs can be fine, others can experience vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and acute kidney failure from a single grape so it's important that they receive immediate medical attention to minimise the risks of toxicity.

Poor Biscotti is feeling very sorry for himself after eating some sultanas. He is the 4th case in the last two weeks where we have had to induce emesis (vomiting) due to an animal eating some form of grape. Please be careful about leaving snacks in purses and school bags where your dog might have access.

It's getting hot HOT πŸ”₯ Summer usually means allergy season, and we're seeing an influx of hotspots lately.

Hot spots are a form of acute moist dermatitis, and grow incredibly rapidly in warm, moist environments. Dogs with thick coats and allergies are more at risk, especially if they have a bath or go swimming. It's important to check your dogs daily and make sure they're dried thoroughly after getting wet.

Ollie was a model patient and let us clip and clean his hotspots without needing sedation. Thankfully his mum got on top of things before they got too bad.

Poor Stormy ate a 🐝 spicy raisin 🐝 today, which unfortunately didn't agree with her. Be wary as the weather warms up and bees start circulating in the environment.

Symptoms of a severe allergic reaction can include:
🐝 Pain/discomfort
🐝 Facial swelling
🐝 Drooling
🐝 Compromised airways/breathing

Stormy's owners did brilliantly and contacted us immediately, ensuring that Stormy received prompt veterinary attention to reduce the swelling and prevent airway issues. She maintained a bright and happy disposition the whole time, still wanting cuddles and treats πŸ₯°

Just a reminder to prepare our pets for NYE:
1. If your pet is scared of fireworks, allow them access to a place where they like to hide and feel safe, maybe in their crate, under the bed/sofa or in the laundry.
2. Close all curtains to minimise light flashes.
3. Play some music in the background, try Bach, or some dogs find audiobooks soothing.
4. Have lots of their favourite treats and toys ready so that you can engage them in games and fun times for distraction, if possible.
5. If they are upset or scared, cuddling them will not 'reinforce their fear'. Please do comfort them if it helps them to feel better.
6. Make sure your pet is microchipped and has ID such as a tag/collar on, just in case they get lost.
7. Ask your vet about meds - some pets who are phobic need them to prevent a panic attack.

Summer in Australia brings parties, storms, and fireworks. Many pets find these events incredibly stressful, especially those that grew up during the pandemic. Here are some tips for helping them feel secure during this time: https://kb.rspca.org.au/knowledge-base/how-should-i-care-for-my-pets-during-fireworks-displays/

If your pet experiences distress or anxiety related to noises, please call us to schedule an appointment to discuss medication options. Many of these medications take time to trial to find an effective dose, so we encourage you not to leave it to the last minute.
