To help manicures progress more calmly with less cooperative cats, our team would love to share our top nail clip tips:

✅ Utilise your pet’s favourite lickable treat (e.g. liquid treat sachets or cream cheese on a lick-mat) for distraction
✅ Consider gently towel wrapping your cat to calm them and reduce their capacity for swatting or wriggling
✅ Keep things short and sweet with a few nails per session
✅ Ask our team about the option of pre-clip calming medications

If you’re still feeling unsure on how to gently tame your little tiger, please consult our feline-friendly team for more assistance! 🐾✂️

Whilst an energetic game of laser light chasing can be entertaining for both you and your cat, these toys should be used judiciously to avoid causing harm. 🔦

Ensure that you never shine the light directly into your pet’s eyes, and try to avoid using it in a way that pushes your cat beyond their fitness level. 🐈

It’s also a good idea to use pointers in moderation, and ensure you finish games by offering your pet something to finally “catch” (such as a favourite toy or treat) to avoid frustration or the development of obsessive behaviours. 🎾

💖International Dog Day💖

No one can warm the heart like man’s best friend and in honour of the bond between human & canine, Dog Day is celebrated!🥰

💛This day was created to commemorate all breeds; mixed and pure. Established in 2004 the aim was to promote excellent dog ownership and to raise awareness and encourage the adoption of those in rescue shelters.

We pay tribute to these incredible animals who continue to selflessly bring comfort, keep us safe, support/assist the disabled and blind, even assist with emergency services & many more wonderful contributions🐾

🐶Above all else they provide unconditional love, so take some time to appreciate the value that your family dog brings to your life, holding a very special place in our hearts

Ways to celebrate🫶
🔸 Donate to an animal welfare organisation.
🔹 Adopt from your local shelter.
🔸 Become a volunteer or foster carer.
🔹 Get active with your dog.
🔸 Spoil your dog with a new toy.
🔹 Teach your dog a new trick.
🔸 Watch your favourite dog film.
🔹 Have a dog friendly get-together

Whilst dental disease is one of the most common causes of pongy breath in pets, our team also considers other potential issues when faced with a particularly smelly canine or feline oral cavity. 🐶🐱

These include:
🦷 Pieces of bone or clumps of fur stuck in between the teeth
🦷 Lumps in the mouth
🦷 Mouth injuries caused by licking a caustic substance or chewing an electrical cord
🦷 Internal health issues such as kidney disease

So, if you notice that your pet’s breath is getting a bit whiffy, it’s best to book them in for a prompt veterinary check-up! 🏥

With daily brushing being the gold standard in canine oral health care, our team would love to pass on a few tips to help make brushing your pet’s teeth more approachable:
1️⃣ Ensure that your pet’s mouth isn’t sore before starting to brush, or else they’ll naturally resist the process – book them in for a dental check-up with our vets if you’re unsure.
2️⃣ Ease your pet into brush-training by starting with some dry medical gauze wrapped over your finger. 🦷🪥
3️⃣ Don’t forget to offer your pet regular tasty bribes throughout! 🍖

For more advice on keeping your pet’s teeth in tip-top shape, chat to our helpful team. And if you have a great photo of your dog flashing their pearly whites, please post it below!

🐶If you've got a puppy that chews on everything around the house, you'll be happy to know that teething stops around 9 months of age. This is when most of the chewing to help relieve their sore gums subsides😊

Pups have 28 baby or deciduous teeth that fall out during that 6-9 months period and any baby teeth that remain after this time are called retained baby teeth and must be removed under general anesthesia to help make way for their permanent adult teeth!🐾🦷

The first question many owners ask us about dental extractions in their pet is, “Will they still be able to eat properly?”

Firstly, remember that adult dogs have 42 permanent teeth whilst cats have 30, so your pet definitely has a few back-up chompers! 🐾

Secondly, extraction is only recommended for very abnormal or irreparably damaged teeth, which your pet is likely avoiding chewing with anyway. It’s very common for owners to notice their pet actually eating more comfortably after the removal of such teeth! 🦷

🐾🦷Dental Month Is Here🦷🐾

Our pet's mouth plays such an important role in their overall health and quality of life. Like us, sore teeth can make them depressed and in more extreme cases can put them off their food. When we have a tooth ache we make an appointment to visit the dentist to have the issue fixed so we should do the same for our pet🧡

Old dogs require old-dog nutrition. 🐶🍽️ Nutritional requirements change as our dogs age. A puppy’s diet should be quite different from an old dog’s, as they have different energy, fibre and nutrient needs.

We strongly recommend feeding older dogs a specifically formulated food that addresses the unique nutritional needs of an older animal. This includes increased fibre, decreased calories, and increased supplementation of fatty acids. If you’re unsure what to feed your dog, contact us for advice. 📞🐾

🐾Sasha, a brave 8-year-old German Shepherd, was diagnosed with B cell lymphoma earlier this year. She presented to our clinic with a swollen leg and enlarged lymph nodes in multiple locations over her body. This type of cancer, commonly found in dogs, affects the lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell that plays a crucial role in the immune system. B cell lymphoma typically manifests in the lymph nodes, spleen, liver, and bone marrow, and can spread quickly if not treated.

Sasha faced a challenging journey, but her story is now one of hope and resilience as she has successfully entered remission after completing chemotherapy🥰

The news of Sasha's diagnosis was a tough blow for her family, who couldn't imagine life without their furry friend. Determined to give Sasha the best possible chance, they embarked on a journey of treatment, hope, and unwavering support🫶

Under the care of our dedicated veterinary team, Sasha began her chemotherapy regimen. Week after week, Sasha showed remarkable strength, her tail wagging and eyes shining with determination✨

Now, Sasha is back to enjoying her favorite activities - playing fetch, going on long walks, and snuggling with her family❤️❤️❤️

Any eye changes in pets should be checked by the vet, as they can be a sign of serious disease.

However, some eye changes are considered normal, so knowing what is a normal eye change and what is not is essential. For example, as dogs get older, they often acquire a blueish, transparent haze to their eyes. 🐕👀 This is called nuclear sclerosis. It affects the lens of the eye and is often associated with reduced vision. As a rule, we always recommend older dogs get checked every six months to ensure changes are age-related and not disease-related. 🩺🐶

✨It was a special and uplifting moment for Simba and his family this week as he finished his 17 weeks of chemotherapy!👏
In December last year after a brief period of being unwell Simba was sadly diagnosed with lymphoma, a cancer that originates in the lymphatic system. After discussions of the treatment options with Dr Eden and a few additional tests, it was decided that Simba was a good candidate for chemotherapy and with his owners dedication the treatment was commenced🐾
It is safe to say over his chemotherapy journey everyone at the practice has fallen in love with Simba, he is the most affectionate and sweet natured boy and will always come in with his tail wagging🥰 He also developed a ridiculously cute tendency to nuzzle into the nurse and not watch as his IV catheter is placed.
We are so thrilled that Simba has responded amazingly to the chemotherapy and is now in remission and back at home being his crazy happy self!❤❤❤
