Even though it's winter now, there are still plenty of bees around! Keep an eye out and get your pet to the vet if they get stung.
This is Frankii, the husky puppy, who has made a full recovery and returned to regular size!
Did you know that we now offer dental x-rays along with all dental procedures?
Just like in human dentistry, X-rays are great for showing us what we can't see with the naked eye - especially what lies beneath the gum line!
Road Test: The Cardigan and Pembroke Corgis
Whilst these are two entirely different breeds now this has not always been the case and free interbreeding occurred until the last 70 years. Both Welsh in origin (from neighbouring counties Pembrokeshire and Cardiganshire) they have developed different personalities and body shapes and sizes since becoming independent from each other and remain one of the most popular pets and companion animals the world over.
Visit our website to read Dr Tony's full road test on these amazing dogs.

They can make clicking sounds up to 233 decibels! For contrast, the loudest human scream on record was 129 decibels.
Are your pets up to date with everything they need before the holidays?
If you're going away for the school holidays, it is worth getting a checkup and making sure everything is in order before you leave.

This is the beautiful Addie! She has been working on weight loss since December 2022, starting at 17.3kg and now down to 9.9kg!
Her owner says "It has taken a massive entire family effort! Essentially Jedi & Yuki (her canine siblings) are grazers, and she would sneak back to eat their food when we weren't looking. So now she is separated at every meal time, and any uneaten food is removed before she is let back outside after they have finished. She has been back to getting a daily treat the last 6 months (which has settled the bald patch on her belly which I'm sure was "hangry" frustration on her part) but her treat is 1/3 the size of her siblings, and it is great that despite this she has still kept the weight off and continued to lose a bit more. It hasn't been easy, a lot of family discipline, but she is definitely a much healthier pooch for it!"
We are so proud of the whole family for putting in the effort to help Addie! 🐾❤️🐾❤️
Did you know that dogs have a three eyelids?
Their third eyelid is underneath their bottom eyelid and comes across the eye to protect and lubricate it when they blink!
Today is World Pet Memorial day, so many beautiful best friends to remember ❤️🐾❤️🐾

We recently had this handsome Vizsla boy, Franklin in for an emergency procedure to remove a ball lodged in his throat. He was rushed in, unable to breathe, cyanotic and with a ball completely wedged in his pharynx.
He was anaesthetised and, with difficulty, we were able to remove the ball.
We are pleased to say that Franklin has made a full recovery.
This is a timely reminder that accidents can happen. Especially coming into winter where you may be more inclined to throw balls or sticks for your dog instead of going on longer hikes or walks. Toys such as frisbees can be safer and you can even get tossing rings that come with a thrower.
Is your dog up to date with parasite control?
Perth has recently recorded a positive case of Heartworm 😱.
Heartworm is transmitted via mosquitoes and can be fatal, however it is easily preventable with regular treatments.
There are many treatments available on the market, ranging from tasty monthly treats or spot on applications to yearly injections.
If your dog has not had prevention for some time, we recommend testing prior to commencing preventative treatments. Given its deadly nature, prevention is much better than cure!
We are more than happy to have a chat and work out which option best suits you and your dog, next time you're in!
Did you know that we have a DIY bath that can be used any time during our open hours?
Very handy for rainy days or if your dog rolls in something in the park 🐾🐾🐾🐾
For a while now, we have had Beransa available for Dogs, the same as Solensia (for cats) it targets the monoclonal antibodies and is a once monthly injection with fewer side effects than other medications used to treat osteoarthritis.
If your dog is showing signs of pain or slowing down, book in to chat to a vet about Beransa Today!
Anyone suffering from arthritis will be well aware that winter is coming - pets and humans alike!
Solensia is a once monthly injectable osteoarthritis pain relief for cats.
It is estimated that 40% of cats live with untreated osteoarthritis.
Solensia is a monoclonal antibody that targets the nerve growth factor and, unlike other pain relief options, works with minimal impact on the liver or kidneys.
In recent clinical trials, 76% of cat owners reported improvement in signs of pain once their cats were treated.
Signs of osteoarthritic pain include (but are not limited to) reduced physical activity & sociability, lameness, avoiding jumping, discomfort when moving/eating.
Signs usually become more obvious in the colder months.
If you think your cat may have osteoarthritis, give us a call or book an appointment online😺🐾
Happy Birthday to Emma, Claire, Sam, Leah and Tyra for May - we hope you all enjoy your birthday month!! 🥳🥳

#trickytuesday This is Meshkis, he is learning Paw. Dogs really enjoy learning new tricks and it is also a great way to strengthen your bond. Dog Whispering #dogtraining #tricks #paw
#trickytuesday This is Odin practicing his emergency stop, he used to be very good at it but without regular practice recently, his stop has become much more relaxed 😂. He knows that "stop" also means wait for further command, which could be "stay" (I will come to you) or "come" (you come to me). Emergency stop is very useful in public places to keep him out of danger. #emergencystop #dogtraining #schnauzersofinstagram #swanbournevet
"Leave it" is an important command to teach our dogs for their own safety. In the video, Neri Dog Whispering , is teaching her boy Meskis how to "Leave it". The two main points with this command are that he backs away from the treat (or danger such as a snake) and that he looks away from it. Such a good boy Mashy! This is one of the commands we work on in our puppy classes. www.swanbournevet.com/puppypreschool #dogwhispering #TrickyTuesday #dogtraining #leaveit

The practice recently purchased an otoscope and endoscope with a video camera. The camera allows for better visualisation and has zoom capabilities that have better magnification than our regular scopes. This video shows Dr Tess finding and removing a nasal grass seed using the new scope. The otoscope is great for ears, noses and tonsils. While the rigid, multipurpose endoscope is for arthroscopy, cystoscopy, laparoscopy, thoracoscopy and vaginoscopy. Especially coming into spring, we look forward to finding grass seeds faster and with minimal damage to surrounding tissue.
Does your dog "heel" off lead in public? Heel is one of the commands learnt in our Dog Obedience courses, which can be booked via our website - www.swanbournevet.com/dogobedience #trickytuesday #heel #dogobedience #training #dogtraining #workinprogress #swanbournevet

Wishing a massive Happy Birthday to Nurses Emma, Sam, Leah & Claire and Vet student/receptionist Tyra who all celebrate in May!
There are many signs that your dog may be suffering from arthritic pain. These range from being grumpy at other dogs/people, reluctance to jump into cars or onto couches, difficulty getting up to not wanting to eat. If your dog shows any of these signs it may be worth a vet check to discuss relief options.
