Tips for your Tuesday 👍

Teaching your dog to not pull on lead. ✋

🔸Start by standing still and quiet. Allow your dog the full length of their lead.

🔹Remain still and quiet when your dog is ignoring you, but the split second they pays attention to you, praise him and give him a treat.

🔸Once you have your dog's attention, you can move off - use your voice and treats to encourage your dog to stay close to you when walking. Always reward your dog when they're walking on a loose lead.

🔹If your dog moves too far away from you, before the lead goes tight, stop and be still and quiet until they pay attention and move closer to you. Reward and move off again. This must happen every single time your dog moves away.

🔸Practice this in short and regular sessions.

🔹Walking around distractions can cause dogs to pull. Place something on the floor that your dog would really like to get to, such as a toy. If your dog pulls on the lead to get towards the toy, stop and call them towards you. Their reward for walking on a loose lead is getting to the toy. This way, the dog learns that pulling just slows things down.

Tips for your Tuesday 👍

How to train your cat to use a carrier. 🐈

First step is to always make each experience a positive one, cats will remember if they get stressed and then try to avoid the carrier, so take things slow and make it fun.

If you can keep the carrier out in the open as your cat will get used to seeing it. If you have limited space, try having it in a room at least once a week with the door open (or taken off) to let your cat get used to the carrier being around with no negative experience attached.

Place a blanket or bedding that already has your cats smell on it in the carrier and leave the door of the carrier open (or the top taken off if that’s easier). Make sure to prop open the door and place something in front of it so the door doesn’t swing shut or close on its own and scare your cat.

Let your cat brush up against the carrier and if you see them near it give them a treat or lots of pats. If your cat does not seem interested in going near the carrier, try spraying a little bit of catnip on the carrier or placing a couple of your cat’s favourite treats in the back of the carrier to encourage them.

Once you notice your cat going in and out of the carrier on their own, place them in the carrier and close the door. Give them lots of treats through the front door and pick up the carrier and move it to another room. Then let your cat out and give them another treat. Repeat this step a number of times.

Soon enough your cat will be comfortable and ready to trial car rides. 🥰

Has your pet been diagnosed with a Mast Cell Tumor? 😔

What is a Mast Cell Tumor?❗️

A mast cell tumor (MCT) is a type of malignant (cancerous) tumor consisting of mast cells. A mast cell is a type of white blood cell that is found in many tissues of the body. Mast cells are allergy cells and play a role in the allergic response. When exposed to allergens, mast cells release chemicals and compounds (called degranulation). One of these compounds is histamine. Histamine is commonly known for causing itchiness, sneezing, and runny eyes and nose – the common symptoms of allergies.

When histamine and the other compounds are released in excessive amounts (with mass degranulation), it can cause full-body effects, including anaphylaxis, a serious, life-threatening, allergic reaction. Other complications include delayed wound healing, bleeding disorders, and gastrointestinal (GI) ulceration.

So how to we diagnose?❗️

We diagnose the Mass by using fine-needle aspiration (FNA). FNA involves taking a small needle with a syringe and suctioning a sample of cells directly from the tumor and placing them on a microscope slide. The Vet then examines the slide under a microscope. (The image below is what they would see under the Microscope)

Tips for your Tuesday 👍

Do you find it hard to give your dog its medication?💊

Try the 12345 Method.

Make up 5 balls of wet food or 5 small bits of cheese, place the pill or capsule into the 4th ball.
Then quickly offer each ball one after another, the first three will seem like a good treat and keep the game going then the 4th one with the medication quickly followed by the 5th one with just the food again.

This is a good way to trick your pet into thinking they are just getting treats and not medicated. 😎

“Driven to provide the highest standards in service and care with knowledge, compassion and attention to detail.”

Nicklin Way Veterinary Surgery (NWVS), located on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, is independently owned by three local veterinarians, Dr Doug Gray, Dr Hazel Gray and Dr Melanie Irvine. Established in 1989, NWVS has grown with the times and offers everything that you may need for the health and wellbeing for your pets.

Our goal at Nicklin Way Veterinary Surgery is simple – Provide the highest standards in service and care with knowledge, compassion and attention to detail. We deliver this by offering our clients a family owned and operated business with familiar faces and an experienced team with state of the art equipment. We educate our clients about their pet’s condition and offer the best possible treatment as our first option. Our pets needs are met and so are our clients. We believe prevention of disease is better than cure and provide personalised health care programmes for your furry, feathered or scaled family members.

We also understand the importance of social responsibility. We help to support the charity “Four Paws Animal Rescue” by providing veterinary work and medications at very special reduced rates. We have also taken steps to reduce the amount of paper we consume at the practice by utilizing the latest in work flow optimization technology in our hospital which has made our hospital paperless.
