Read , let it sink in, then read again :

“No. 1. Get your tack and equipment just right, and then forget about it and concentrate on the horse.

No. 2. The horse is bigger than you are, and it should carry you. The quieter you sit, the easier this will be for the horse.

No. 3. The horse's engine is in the rear. Thus, you must ride your horse from behind, and not focus on the forehand simply because you can see it.

No. 4. It takes two to pull. Don't pull. Push.

No. 5. For your horse to be keen but submissive, it must be calm, straight and forward.

No. 6. When the horse isn`t straight, the hollow side is the difficult side.

No. 7. The inside rein controls the bending, the outside rein controls the speed.

No. 8. Never rest your hands on the horse's mouth. You make a contract with it: "You carry your head and I'll carry my hands."

No. 10. Once you've used an aid, put it back.

No. 11. You can exaggerate every virtue into a defect.

No. 12. Always carry a stick, then you will seldom need it.

No. 13. If you`ve given something a fair trial, and it still doesn't work, try something else—even the opposite.

No. 14. Know when to start and when to stop. Know when to resist and when to reward.

No. 15. If you're going to have a fight, you pick the time and place.

No. 16. What you can't accomplish in an hour should usually be put off until tomorrow.

No. 17. You can think your way out of many problems faster than you can ride your way out of them.

No. 18. When the horse jumps, you go with it, not the other way around.

No. 19. Don`t let over-jumping or dull routine erode the horse's desire to jump cleanly. It's hard to jump clear rounds if the horse isn't trying.

No. 20. Never give up until the rail hits the ground.

No. 21. Young horses are like children—give them a lot of love, but don't let them get away with anything.

No. 22. In practice, do things as perfectly as you can; in competition, do what you have to do.

No. 23. Never fight the oats.

No. 24. The harder you work, the luckier you get."

I want to have a little chat on warm-ups, because it's a topic not often talked about, and something that has massive impacts on our performance, our horse's soundness and also their enjoyment of the sport.

Too often, I watch people warm-up for their classes and am left dismayed by how long a rider warms their horse up for, and how many jumps they include in that warm-up. In fact, there have been many times that I have seen riders jump over 50 fences prior to going into their class, riders warm their horses up at trot and canter for over half an hour, and riders who gallop their horses for extended periods of time, to the point where the horse goes into the ring or starts their course dripping in sweat, heaving for breath and very mentally stressed.

A warm-up should just exist to warm the horses muscles up and nothing more. It is not the place for training, or jumping big fences and it is not the place for jumping, simply for the sake of jumping.

My typical rule of thumb is to get on my horse 10 horses away from being due in the ring. I start with a walk and trot around on a long rein, allowing my horses to warm their muscles across their backs before asking them into a frame so I can bring in some upward and downward transitions within the walk, trot and canter.

Once I have had about a minute canter on each rein, I either go back to a walk and let them catch their breath, or I'll jump them over a cross or two, before going back to a walk. After that, I will usually jump one small upright, one small oxer, one medium upright, one medium over and one big upright and one big oxer.

Inbetween these attempts, I usually walk them to catch their breath because it is extremely important for me that my horse goes into the ring relaxed and full of energy. I do not want to wear them out in the warm-up and have them tired in the ring. It defeats the purpose of a warm-up.

All up, I will be lucky to jump 6-8 fences in the warm up and I will only be on their backs for about 10-20 minutes, with a good portion of that time spent at walk on a long rein. I also rarely jump big in my warm-ups because I want my horse to have a confident building experience, rather than give them a fright prior to going into the ring.

Have you got all your clipping essentials?

Our current favourites for clipping your horse are the Wahl Pro Series Km-2 Clipper, Heiniger Bravura Lithium Clipper With Adjustable 5 In 1 Blade, Heiniger Saphirstyle Cordless Battery Clipper, Heiniger Xplorer Cordless Large Animal Clipper and Heiniger Opal A5 2 Speed Clipper. Having the right clippers can make the experience so much quicker, and the reason we like the highlighted models is that you can change the blades to suit your needs. Having bigger blades can speed up the process as you can take more hair off at once. You can view the range of clipper blades here. You’ll also need some clipper oil and clipper spray (coolant) to help get the best-looking clip possible. Clipper oil helps the clipper glide through the hair smoothly and it’s a good idea to stop every now and then and brush the hair out of the clipping blades. Coolant keeps your blades cool, clean and comfortable whilst reducing friction and also provides an easy glide allowing for ultimate precision and a comfortable cut.
