Brindle, you either love it or you don’t.

Being present within the French Bulldog world, I have noticed there is a movement away from the Brindle gene, despite this being a “breed standard” coat pattern for centuries. This gene is recessive but only requires one copy to be passed to offspring, opposed to two. This means the Brindle gene is dominant within litters when a parent carries it and it can distort or mask rare coats, such as tan points.

So, if Brindle is considered breed standard, why are a lot of us moving away from it? Is breed standard still considered “breed standard”?

Let's talk...

With pet ownership reaching an all-time high over the past three years, it sparks a thought of how pets impact our lives and the positive change they naturally bring.

Only dog lovers can appreciate the sound of their dog's nails on the floor as they run down the hallway to greet you. This is one of my favorite times of the day, coming home to my pups. Most would say the social and emotional benefits of owning a pet outweigh the responsibility or challenges it causes. Owning a pet can relieve stress, depression, and anxiety while encouraging us to get active and bring joy. They provide us comfort and company in times that may be lonely or difficult.

So, if our pups can’t speak our language, why are they so attuned to our feelings and body language? Why can they read us better than most human beings? 🧠

Meet our future mum, Peach 🍑

Peach is a Sable Fawn with tan points. Her dad is “Chosen Few Marshall”, a Rojo and Tan boy bred in Australia with American and European lines. Mum is a Fawn, visual fluffy also bred in Australia, “Famous Frenchies Fluffy Boomer”.

I can’t wait to see what this girl produces in the future as she has some great foundation DNA. She has a gorgeous head and ears, well structured back and legs with great breathing.

Fluffy Frenchies...

Most people are used to French Bulldogs with a short, coarse coat. While all Frenchies are ADORABLE, the newer "fluffy" edition is striking, and I wonder how popular it may become.

There are some misconceptions around the fluffy Frenchies and how their longer coat came about. Firstly, no, they are not cross-bred to produce this. Likely, Frenchies always carried this gene, and on the rare occasion long-haired offspring were produced, euthanasia opted for to ensure it did not spread throughout the gene pool as it is not considered "breed standard". Various genetic labs are now testing for the "LH" gene, and informed pairing of dogs are being carried out to produce this coat. The LH gene is recessive, meaning 2 copies are needed (one from mum and one from dad) for it to physically appear. If mum and dad both carry the "LH" gene, whether that is one or two copies, they will produce fluffy offspring.

Generally, you will pay top dollar for a visual fluffy French Bulldog and there is a reason for this. As this phenotype was not desirable in the past, the gene pool for short hair became larger, therefore diluting the fluffy gene. This means the LH gene is considered rare and breeders often have to import bloodlines or breed multiple generations to produce healthy, fluffy Frenchies.

"Man's best friend."

I think most dog lovers would agree that this statement is accurate. Dogs have been loyal companions for hundreds of years, and seem to provide us with a level of emotional wellbeing that humans cannot match.

So why is this the case? The first word that comes to mind is "unconditional". These creatures have unwavering loyalty to those closest to them, no matter the circumstance. Dogs give people affection, support, comfort and love with zero expectation. I feel this kind of love does not often exist between human companions, and I feel it contributes towards a relationship that contains no contempt, no resentment and no disappointment.

There is something completely innocent and uncomplicated about the relationship between man and dog. Is this seamless connection possible between humans? Could a dog's relationship skills be better than any human on this planet?

Just like people, dogs form personalities and traits. Some are breed-specific, some learnt or a product of their environment.

The French Bulldog has always held a place in my heart. I would say they are the larrikin of the dog world, intelligent, mischievous, and THE cutest thing you've ever laid your eyes on (yes, they know it!). They are typically great with people, kids, dogs and are a fantastic all-around family pet. They adore the company of people and are as enthusiastic about pizza night as you are. These little gremlins are utterly hilarious, always keeping you entertained. They are an unbeatable companion, happy to snuggle up on the couch and watch Netflix on a rainy Sunday or walk around their local park and catch some rays.

They say people tend to associate themselves with breeds that suit or are similar to their character. So, what dog breed are you?

Let's talk...

Chewing is a natural, innate behaviour in dogs. Chewing can assist with teething pups, relieve boredom, deliver enrichment, strengthen jaws and clean teeth.

On the flip side, your dog chewing bones, horns and various other popular options pose a significant risk which could see them end up in the emergency room. Chews such as bones and horns are incredibly firm and can cause broken teeth or oral injury. Cheap rubber options can break into pieces and cause a choking hazard or result in your dog ingesting them, leading to oesophageal or gastrointestinal obstruction.

All things in life present risk, no matter how small you think the risk may be. Cutting out chewing altogether is drastic and may cause your pup to chew on the furniture or your favourite pair of trainers! So weigh up the options on the market and decide what risk level you're comfortable with 🦴

Let's talk...

The stigma around mental health in humans is easing as time goes on, and this makes me wonder how long it will be until we have a further emphasis on mental health in dogs and other companion animals.

Do our canines feel complex emotions? I am not a scientist, although, from what I have witnessed, I think our pups have more depth than we think. Dogs read humans like a book. They pick up on our mannerisms, our routines, associate noises with actions, and even sulk when they get told off. So if they are complex enough to do this, why do we simplify them? Is it easier to dismiss the issue because they can't have a meltdown in aisle four at Coles?

Anxiety, depression and OCD are not uncommon in canines and various depression and anxiety medications can be prescribed by veterinarians to help manage these conditions. If your pooch has some unusual behaviors that have been causing you concern, go and talk to your vet, I GUARANTEE that they have heard it all before.
