We are seeing an unprecedented number of patients at the moment and operating in a contactless manner has meant our workflow is slower. We ask that for any routine items (such as vaccinations, nail trims, and non-urgent items) that you please book with as much notice as possible so that we can ensure we are able to see patients that need urgent care. Please don't hesitate to ask the team if you are uncertain.

Thank you so much for your ongoing support of the team and for your patience. We know that COVID times have been trying for everyone and our first priority remains the wellbeing and care of your furry family members!

Unfortunately we have had to close early today. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding...

Just as puppies and kittens, our senior pets have their own unique set of needs and challenges that we as owners need to be aware of as they enter their twilight years. Changes in dietary and energy needs go hand in hand for changes in veterinary care for senior companion animals, and your vet is the best place to go when forming a care plan for your pet as they age.

It's National Veterinary Receptionist Week!

This week, we celebrate the important ladies behind the front desk at 4 Paws! Janet and Angie are the first and last contact you will often have here at the clinic and they provide the vital empathy, care, and communication to give you and your lovely pets the best possible experience in our clinic. Receptionists do so much to enrich veterinary facilities all over the world and it is important to recognize their contributions!

We are so privileged to have these two lovely ladies manning our front desk, taking care of you and just generally helping to keep us all in line and organised!

Introduction of annual permits for non-desexed cats and dangerous/restricted dogs

The NSW Government is introducing annual permits for non-desexed cats and restricted and dangerous dogs as part of its commitment to promoting responsible pet ownership and improving animal welfare standards.

From 1 July 2020 owners of cats not desexed by four months of age will be required to pay an $80 annual permit in addition to their one-off lifetime pet registration fee.

This will create a stronger incentive to desex cats, which in turn will improve their health and wellbeing, including reducing the risk of some cancers.

Improving desexing rates will also ease the burden on pounds and shelters, reduce euthanasia rates, and help to address concerns about feral, stray and roaming cats and their effect on wildlife.

Exemptions are in place for cats that are registered by 1 July 2020, those kept for breeding purposes by members of recognised breeding bodies, and cats which cannot be de-sexed for medical reasons.

From 1 July 2020 owners of dogs of a restricted breed or formally declared to be dangerous will be required to pay a $195 annual permit in addition to their one-off lifetime pet registration fee.

This will serve as a further disincentive to owning high-risk dogs and encourage owners to better manage the behaviour of their animal.

From 1 July 2020, pet owners will be able to pay for annual permits using the NSW Pet Registry website or through their local council.

Anyone registering a cat on the NSW Pet Registry will be informed that they must pay for an $80 annual permit if their animal is not desexed by four months of age.

Annual permit fees will go directly to the Companion Animals Fund which pays for companion animal management by local councils including pounds/shelters, ranger services, dog recreation areas, and education and awareness programs.
The fund is also used to operate the NSW Pet Registry and carry out responsible pet ownership initiatives.

If you require any further information or assistance, please contact the NSW Pet Registry at [email protected] and 1300 134 460.

EASTER PET SAFETY

With Easter just around the corner, now is as good a time as any to consider working a little extra pet safety into our holiday plans.

Easter egg hunts and family feasts are always great fun, but they can sometimes come with hidden risks to our furry friends. Being aware of these risks is the best way to ensure a fun holiday break for the whole family!

The wet weather may have been keeping some of us indoors, but sometimes our pets just need to get out and about for a while!

There are a range of options if, like Paddy, your pooch is a little puddle-shy and wary of that damp grass - and we're not talking tiny umbrellas! Stylish raincoats and water resistant booties are just some of the ways we've seen our patients coping with the last week of rainfall.

We have a number of these options available in our Pets in the City Boutique - and we are awaiting a shipment of exciting winter options soon!

If you experience an emergency during this period, please contact the nearest emergency vet hospital to assist you.

We all know how inquisitive our furry family members can be - sometimes to their own detriment!

Many of the toxicity cases we see are down to common household items, and it can pay to have an awareness of these household hazards in the event of an emergency.

With Autumn officially starting this month and all those tempting leaves starting to gather, it's important to be mindful of some of the risks they can present to your pets

As people are out and about more and taking their dogs with them during the last of the Summer months, we've seen an increase in the number of patients we treat for kennel cough.

This infection is normally prevented through an annual vaccination, and is not as common as it used to be, but is highly infectious and can be easily spread in areas where dogs congregate.

To check if your dog is up to date with their annual vaccinations, please contact the clinic and speak with our friendly staff.

Summer in Sydney brings about the much-awaited beach weather, and it's always fun to include our canine companions on a beach trip!

There are a few simple ways you can ensure everyone has a great time on a day out at the beach, including:
1. Making sure to find a dog-friendly beach (and understanding the rules regarding on- and off-leash zones)
2. Having essential equipment packed and accessible (such as water bottles and a bowl, poo bags, a first aid kit, and a sun shelter)
3. Being aware of your dog - supervising them around water and any debris, and around other beachgoers and their animals

If it's your dog's first time around water, it's a good idea to test it with them until you have an idea of their swimming ability (no two dogs are the same!). Remember - salt water ingestion can be dangerous, and it's important to prevent your dog from drinking seawater.

The year's end can be a stressful time for many animals, as strangers, loud noises and bright lights can understandably be a cause for alarm. Thankfully, it doesn't always have to be this way. Follow through for some tips on managing your pet's stress and anxiety during this time.

If you would like to discuss anxiety management further, please contact our team on 9953 1264.

It's important to keep an eye on your pets during the summer months. Being aware of the possible signs of heat stroke can help you know when to take them to the vet.

This time of year brings plenty of yummy treats into the family home - some that are not always good to share with our furry family members.

But there's no reason they have to miss out on all the fun! Here are some tips for creating a dog-friendly feast to share the party with your canine companions during the festive season.
