Did you know that insect bites can cause anything from a mild local reaction to anaphylaxis in our pets ? Harvey escaped a nasty reaction and after a little shot of pain relief his sore paw was feeling a lot better . If you suspect your pet has been bitten by an insect it’s always good to have a vet check them over for signs of progressive reaction . Any questions ? Call 80575362.

Introducing February Patient of the month

Miracle Maxie

If it wasn't for a feeding tube, Maxie wouldn't be here with us today!
Maxie was presented to us orginally for an ulcerated skin lesion on his tummy, chronic vomiting and weight loss.
After thorough investigation and specialist referral, Maxie started treatment for acute liver toxicity and suspected inflammatory bowel disease.
Unfortunately his liver disease became so severe he refused all food and water and giving him medication became impossible. He went from 4.5kg to 3.3kg in 10 days (26% of his bodyweighht).
Faced with a difficult decison to either put him under a risky general anaesthetic to place a feeding tube or humanely euthanise them, Maxie's owners decided to give him every chance of survival. He underwent the anaesthetic and sdailed through smoothly.
An oesophageal feeding tube was placed down his neck and into his food pipe to deliver nutrition and medication directly into his stomach.
With extreme dedication, Maxie's owners fed and medicated him via this tube round the clock, sometimes every 2 hours.
After 4 weeks of intensive care at home, Maxies liver and gut had recovered enough that he no longer needed the extra support of the feeding tube. He was eating on his own and steadily putting on weight. At our last recheck 6 weeks after he first fell ill, Maxie had regained all the weight he had lost and was back to his normal self.

Feeding tubes sound daunting but they can be a true life saver by delivering much needed nutritioon and medications to patients who are seriously ill. They are well; tolerated and do not cause pain in cats and dogs. They certainly saved Maxie's life!

🐶 Did you know that anxiety is common in dogs? 🐶

Many dogs find particular sounds, situations and environments stressful. Anxiety can affect pets of all ages, and is likely to worsen over time, so early treatment is best to get on top of the problem.

Anxious dogs may show signs such as pacing, restlessness, excessive panting, shaking, barking or whining, licking at paws, aggression and destructive behaviour. Management usually involves environment modification, training and possibly medication.

If you think your dog may suffer from anxiety, please contact our friendly team to book an appointment with one of our vets. ☎

Has your pet put on some kilos? 🐶🐱
41% of dogs and 32% of cats in Australia are overweight. Although we like to think this means there is just more of them to love, obesity can have serious effects on their health and significantly shorten their life-span.
Overweight pets are more prone to arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, respiratory disease and spinal disease. Weight loss can be difficult for some pets (and by extension owners) but it follows the general formula of weight loss = more calories burned than consumed. For most pets this means increasing the amount of exercise and reducing the amount of food.
The guide on the back of the food bag is a guide only and many pets need less. It is best to weigh out the amount allowed for each day and only feed from this portion. If you add treats, you should reduce the amount of dinner fed. Low-calorie treats such as carrots or zucchini are best. There are also prescription diets available which may be helpful.
For the best results, all household members should be on board, and a certain amount of fortitude and tough-love is required. Just remember, it is a hard process but their health and long-term happiness is worth it!
If you would like to book an appointment to discuss a weight loss plan for your pet, please contact our friendly team by calling (02) 8057 5362 or emailing [email protected] ☎️

🫀🪱Heartworm prevention🫀🪱

When an infected mosquito bites your dog and infects it with heartworm larvae (baby heartworms), it grows inside your dog, living in the heart and lung vessels. The heartworm causes heart murmurs and breathing problems that slowly get worse as it grows.

While heartworm disease can be treated, there can be potential side effects and high costs. Even after treatment, your dog can be left with irreversible damage to the heart and lungs.

Prevention is key to keep your dog from developing heartworm disease.🐕

Have a chat to one of our lovely vets about the best preventative option for you at your next consultation or contact us on 8057 5362 to make an appointment. ☎

💅NAIL TRIMS💅

Regular nail trims are vital for your dogs overall well-being and should be done approximately once a month, depending on your dogs activity levels.

Frequent walks on concrete is a great alternative for dogs who are anxious about nail trims, as it is a great natural way to wear down their nails as they walk! 🐕‍🦺

It can be a very nerve-racking task - especially for those with black nails! If you need an extra hand with trimming your pets nails, contact one of our lovely team members by calling 8057 5362 or emailing [email protected] to make an appointment! ☎

💩Does your dog scoot their bottom along the ground? Do they lick at their bottom a lot? Many dogs have problems with their a**l glands.💩

The a**l glands are two sacs located internally on either side of the a**s. These sacs fill up with smelly secretions that dogs use to mark their territory, and are usually expressed during a bowel movement.

Many dogs will get impacted a**l glands where the ducts to the a**s become inflamed and they get a build-up of secretions which is uncomfortable. These pets need their a**l glands expressed manually, as if they are left they can become infected and form an abscess which is painful and may rupture.☹️

Some dogs may just need their a**l glands expressed as a once-off, whereas others will need regular expression, especially if the ducts become thickened or scarred from previous issues.

Please contact our friendly team on (02) 8057 5262 if you think your dog may be having trouble with their a**l glands! ☎💩

Introducing our Beautiful, January Patient of the month, Lizzie!

Lizzie is a 16 years young English Cocker Spaniel, who came to Cammeray Vet for an assessment of her lip fold dermatitis last year.
Lip fold dermatitis, also known as lip fold pyoderma, is an infection of the skin in the folds of the lower lips, resulting in pain, inflammation, discharge and smelly lip folds.

Lizzie’s lip folds were very infected and sore and required antibiotics to just keep her comfortable. Lizzie has had lip fold surgery previously, however, as time went on her lower lips lost their elasticity and the folds became more exaggerated resulting in recurrence of her lip fold dermatitis.

Spaniels can be predisposed to lip fold dermatitis as they often have excessive skin present in their bottom jaw which can accumulate saliva and water from drinking, creating the perfect environment for bacteria and yeast to proliferate resulting in a painful skin infection.
After discussing with our surgery team, Lizzie’s owners decided to go ahead with lip fold surgery to try and reduce the folds in her lower lips.

Lizzie’s owners are happy to report that she has made a fantastic recovery from her surgery.
“Our Lizzie has always been a very active dog! She has her mojo back after the surgery and we are happy to announce she is back on patrol at ‘border force Cremorne’.”

The team at Cammery Vet loved having Lizzie as our patient and we are proud of her progress.

🏥🐱Urinary obstructions are one of the most common emergencies in male cats.🏥🐱

Urinary obstructions are when the urethra (which connects the bladder to the outside world) becomes blocked and the cat can’t urinate.

This is a life-threatening emergency as the inability to urinate can lead to pain, dangerous electrolyte imbalances which can cause heart arrhythmias, bladder rupture and acute kidney failure. Urinary obstructions are usually caused by bladder stones or idiopathic cystitis (often from stress), and occasionally UTIs.🐈

‼️If you have a male cat and he is showing signs such as straining to urinate, going to the litter tray frequently but not passing any urine or only a tiny amount, crying in pain, producing red or pink urine, or collapse then please seek urgent veterinary attention.‼️☎️
