Ever noticed those slits at the sides of a dog’s nose? Why do dogs have them?

Once again, nature proves her elegance in the design of our dogs. When we humans inhale and exhale, air comes in the same way it goes out. Any smells that come in through our mouths are forced out as we exhale.

When a dog exhales through his nose, however, the exhaled air is released through those slits and off to the side so that nice, smelly air going into the dog’s nostrils doesn’t get diluted with the outgoing air. Put another way, the slits allow the dog to avoid smelling what he just exhaled.

The slits help the dog hold scent particles in the nostrils even as exhaled air passing out the slits creates a swirling air turbulence allowing interesting odors to be inhaled directly into the centre of each nostril. Since dogs breathe faster when trying to sniff a certain smell, they widen their nostrils to pull in more air which makes it possible for a dog searching for smells to have a steady stream of air coming in for up to 40 seconds, maybe even longer.

The slits also allow dogs to wiggle each nostril independently which gives them the ability to know which nostril a smell entered. This is how a dog can pinpoint where a smell is coming from, and why a dog searching for smells on the ground will weave back and forth as he follows a trail.

We all know the superb smelling abilities of dogs, but let’s use an analogy between scent and sight to really put it into perspective: What we as humans can see at a third of a mile, our dog can see more than 3,000 miles away and still see as well.

🔥 Heatwave Warning 🔥: As temperatures soar in parts of Aus, please prioritize your furry friends! 🐾 Vets are seeing cases of heatstroke in pets – a serious and preventable danger. 🌡️

Keep them cool, hydrated, and never leave them in your car, even for a minute, or with windows down as a car can still heat up to dangerous levels VERY quickly.

Please don’t be tempted to walk them during the day - if the pavement is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog. ☀️🐶

SNAKE BITES :-

Your pet will need urgent treatment and Treatment involves an infusion of snake anti-venom, intravenous fluids & pain relief. A snake bite can be treated and the quicker treatment begins the more successful the outcome.

What to do if your pet is bitten:-

Remain calm and don’t panic. Keeping calm will soothe your pet and help minimise their distress and movement.
Apply a pressure immobilisation bandage if possible (similar first aid techniques as recommended for people), but do not use a tourniquet or restrict blood flow. Do not try to look for a bite mark or clean the bite site with anything.
Keep your pet calm and quiet, movement helps the venom spread around the lymphatic system, so the less they move, the more time you have.
Carry your pet to the car, do not allow your pet to walk if you can help it. Again, any restriction of movement helps.
Transport your pet to a vet immediately, and if possible, call the clinic to let them know you are on the way. They may also provide additional instructions, and be prepared for your arrival.

Symptoms can include:

Dilated pupils
Weakness in hind legs
Trembling
Drooling
Pale gums
Pacing around anxiously
Restlessness
Difficulty breathing
Vomiting
Panting
Collapse straight after being bitten, and then act normally for a period of time
Become comatose / unconscious
Bleeding from nose, mouth, bite site
Sudden death

When anyone joins us on our ventures into the woods, even John, who Sunny has lived with for 7 years, Sunny maintains a cautious distance.

I suspect that if John were to have joined us routinely, which he didn't and which is not likely to happen in the future, Sunny would not be as wary and fearful as he is. A dog like Sunny may need 5,789 positive exposures to a trigger to start to like it. I think we may only be up to 3,874.

People have chastised me for keeping Sunny 'trapped in fear' by not forcing him to interact with triggers. I can only surmise that they have never had experience with a dog like this.

Fear is not something a dog is trapped it. It is a response to objects or events in their environment. For some dogs that response is subtle and for others it overwhelms any other response we would like them to have.

I can't force John to join us and I can't force Sunny to like it when he does. At best I can try to make the experience as pleasant and non-threatening as possible for both of them.

Training Myths and Misconceptions - Susan Friedman

The SINGLE thing I don’t like about my profession is constantly fighting these myths and misconceptions. And the more you try to explain the science, the more push back from uneducated individuals that it’s my “opinion”. When in fact it’s science and their poor understanding is the issue. This incorrect understanding makes up more than half of the training community and 3/4 or more of the general public. So there are many trainers out there charging money for their incorrect and uneducated advice, based on myths and misconceptions.

- Labels are poorly used to describe behaviours happening, instead of actually looking at the real cause of those behaviours. This ends up getting into a behaviour loop with no resolution. The dog is dominant causing aggression, he is aggressive cause he is dominant. So punish him as he is dominant, but dominance is just a construct based on him doing aggressive behaviour!
- Applied behaviour analysis is often falsely described as ignoring emotions and feelings. But Happiness is a function of a positive reinforcement contingency. Anxiety is a function of an avoidance contingency. Frustration is a function of extension contingency. All behaviours have a function and emotions can be used to describe these behaviours but it doesn’t help us find a solution.
- Skinner opposed the use of punishment in behavior change because: (a) It did not teach the person how to behave well, (b) it did not necessarily eliminate the behavior, and c) the punishment itself may result in behavior worse than that being punished
- There are some massive training misconceptions that as a trainer I fight “common knowledge” to explain everyday!
* Food and comfort reinforces fear, but you can’t reinforce emotions.
* All rewards reinforce behaviours. Well if the behaviour doesn’t get stronger it’s not a reinforcer!!
* Using food is bribery, but actually only if presented first. If paid as a reward which is how we use it, it comes at the end. So timing during training and process is critical
* Reinforcement is claimed to be slower than punishment. Nope we are just not as good at reinforcement as we have not been bought up with that. So the better a trainer the less likely they need to use punishment, and some behaviours can’t be taught using punishment. Shaping is the most powerful tool to teach new behaviour and doesn’t need to be slow if done correctly.
- These myths and misconceptions cause lower standards of welfare, which is something I explain in all my classes.

Well, you know how much I love dogs, right? Um, have we met?

On Saturday night, May 16th at 6 PDT, I'm performing new music specially designed to reduce stress along with music for canine enrichment. I'll be sharing during the Facebook Live why they need both.

And a world premiere!

During my first Facebook Live in March, I shared a beautiful Nocturne written for me by Zach Gulaboff Davis played with eight fingers. He did it again and wrote another Nocturne, but this time it's for the dogs (and played with 10 fingers). In addition to being an award-winning composer, Zach is an American Kennel Club dog agility judge. In other words, he understands dog behavior and their needs. I can't wait to share this beauty with you and your dogs. It's breathtaking!

Recording music for dogs isn't new for me. After spending 10 plus years creating music to help relieve pet anxiety, in 2017 NPR called me The Pet Calming Maestro. I know, pretty cool, huh?
