One of the most common infectious diseases in cats is called ‘cat flu’.

Just like the flu in humans, cat flu can be caused by several different viruses, including calicivirus and herpesvirus. 🤒 While often self-limiting, it can cause severe disease in some cats. If your cat develops a persistent cough, heavy nasal discharge, ulcers of the mouth or nose, inappetence or has difficulty breathing, they should see a vet. Treatments are available to reduce symptoms. 🐾

When going away on holidays, it can be difficult to know what’s the best option for your cat. Should you book a pet sitter, or should you take them to a cattery? 🐱

When trying to decide, take into account your individual cat’s needs and personality. If they have medical conditions or are elderly, they might require additional care. 💼 Never leave your cats unattended for extended periods of time.

If you’re unsure what’s best for your cat, our team would be happy to guide you.

Whether your dog loves going for a drive or not, it’s important to always prioritise safety. 🐕‍🦺

Dogs should be secured in the rear of the car, using either a car harness and tether or a travel crate. This is because in an accident, dogs could become airborne and risk serious injury to themselves and others in the car. 🚗

If travelling in a ute, ensure dogs are tethered appropriately to the middle of the tray so they cannot fall off the sides. Never leave a dog in a hot car.

When young children and cats need to share the same space, we recommend a few safety measures to help ensure the enjoyment and comfort of both parties.

Firstly, children below seven years of age should be supervised with cats, as they cannot always reliably read feline body language to know when the cat’s had enough!

Secondly, we advise that every cat living with children has at least one child-free retreat zone (such as an elevated bed or a room cordoned off by a baby-gate) where they can hide if they are feeling overwhelmed.

With the right prep, cats and children can become purr-fect friends! 😻🧒

Whilst choke chains and prong collars are occasionally still used for helping to control strong or excitable dogs, we strongly advise against their use. ⚠️

These types of collars can potentially cause permanent damage to the windpipe or the soft tissues around the neck, not to mention being painful for the dog.

Instead, we recommend training your pet with gentle walking aids, such as humane headcollars. For recommendations on humane walking devices and positive method trainers who can help guide you and your dog to calmer walks, please contact our knowledgeable team. 🐕

Whilst desexing your cat has numerous health and behavioural benefits, it’s good to be aware that this procedure will also usually slow your pet’s metabolism slightly in the long-term.

To prevent your cat gaining unhealthy weight at maturity, we’d recommend the following:
Switching adult cats to a complete and balanced diet designed to control their weight – ask our team for recommendations if you’re unsure
Encouraging your cat to exercise daily through supervised outdoors exploration time or indoor play with toys 🎾

For more advice on assessing and supporting your cat’s body condition, consult our health-happy vets! 🐾

*Whispering* Does your pet get very anxious with loud noises such as fireworks, thunderstorms or unexpected yelling? 🎇🌪️

Unfortunately, if not treated correctly, noise phobias can worsen over time and may result in your pet developing destructive or self-endangering behaviours in their panicked attempts to escape.

If you suspect that your pet has a noise phobia, we’d recommend a prompt consultation with our soothing vets. Depending on your pet’s particular issue, we can make recommendations on behavioural modification and/or calming medications to help quieten their fear. 🌿

Feeling a little concerned that your dog has been recommended to trial an anti-anxiety medication?

Rest assured that fluoxetine, one of the most common anti-anxiety medications recommended for dogs, is well tolerated by most pets in the long term and usually has good success in helping them to feel a lot calmer too! 🐩

In the first few days of therapy, some pets may feel a little nauseous, but this can be managed with anti-nausea medications if required, and generally passes quickly.

So, when it comes to anti-anxiety medications in pets, don’t stress!

Does your cat find routine vet visits stressful? 😾

Our team would recommend the following stress-soothing tips:
• Ten minutes before travelling, spray your pet’s carrier with calming feline scent hormone
• Partially cover your pet’s carrier with a light towel to increase their feelings of security
• In the waiting room, keep your pet’s carrier securely up on your lap where possible
• Ask our team about the potential usage of safe, calming sedatives for your pet prior to veterinary appointments

With a lot of conflicting marketing in the pet food space, it’s understandable that pet owners may feel uncertain about the best diet for their pet. 🍽️

We’d like to reassure you that the most important aspects of a good pet diet are that it is complete and balanced for your pet’s species and life stage (either for growth or adult maintenance) and comes from a source that conducts regular food safety checks to reduce the risk of harmful contamination.

Whether that manifests as a cooked, dry kibble, or tinned food diet is up to you and your pet’s individual preferences!

For personalised advice on healthy food options for your pet, consult our diet-diligent team! 🐾

Spider bites in pets: new fear unlocked? 🕷️

Whilst spider bites in pets fortunately don’t seem to be a common issue, it’s still a good idea to be aware, as redback and funnel-web spider bites can cause severe pain, whilst redback bites can also potentially lead to vomiting, muscle cramping, agitation or even sudden death in cats.

We advise a strategy of prevention by keeping pets out of sheds and garages where possible, and keeping outdoor areas tidy and clean, with objects well-spaced to reduce potential spider hiding nooks. 🏡

If you suspect your pet may have been bitten by a spider, we’d recommend seeking urgent advice from our team or the Australian Animal Poisons Helpline.

With lots of “oodles” (poodle cross dogs) about, our team would love to remind owners of the importance of regular grooming for these pets. 🐩

Poodles have constantly growing hair (instead of fur), meaning that they usually require hair clips every 8 weeks or so, in addition to regular brushing and combing to prevent mats.

It’s particularly important to keep the hair around your pet’s eyes clipped very short, to prevent long strands dangling into their eyes and causing conjunctivitis (eye irritation).

If you have a photo of your beautiful “oodle” looking freshly groomed n’ fine, please post it below! ✂️

How lucky are we to have such amazing clients and patients like Spartacus and his Dad Jake.
Spartacus is known to get into a few silly situations.. he's a Labrador.. he can't help it 😉
On his 1 year anniversary, after an emergency surgery to remove a foreign body from his intestine, Jake surprised the team with the most beautiful bunch of flowers. To say we were blown away with this kind gesture is an understatement. Thank you so very much Jake and Spartacus.
You truly made our day ❤️

With more life-threatening parasites such as ticks and heartworms often stealing the limelight, many pet owners forget about the humble (but still harmful) flea!

Whilst fleas can make any animal uncomfortable, pets with an allergy to flea saliva can develop severe dermatitis (skin inflammation) from flea bites, leading to significant itchiness, hair loss and even secondary bacterial infections.

Additionally, in very young or old pets, significant flea burdens can lead to blood loss anaemia and weakness.

For advice on the easiest, safest and most effective flea prevention for your pet, consult our critter clued-up team! 🐕

Just like us, dogs can develop hay fever-like irritation of their eyes and nose.

Pets with this issue will often sneeze and/or rub at their eyes and may develop runny discharge from their nose and eyes. 🐕 Owners will also often note redness and swelling of the pet’s conjunctiva (the moist tissue around the eyeballs that is usually pink).

If you notice any irritation around your dog’s face, we’d recommend a prompt check-up with one of our allergy-aware vets. There’s lots we can recommend to safely and effectively relieve your pet’s pesky problem.
