Nows the time to take advantage of free microchipping.

Protect your pet if they are lost.

Storms are predicted this season which can lead to gates blowing open; pets jumping fences or digging out. Help them find their way home by having them correctly identified.

There is nothing worse then not knowing where your pet is....

FIREWORKS can be scary. Check out this great initiative coming in April 2023.

Meet Jessie. 🐶

Jessie is a very loved rescue puppy, living in Potts Point, and she’s a change maker.

Like many puppies, Jessie loves to play ⚽️ but she HATES fireworks 💥.

Jessie’s owner Ian contacted me to seek help for her fear of fireworks and, between us, we thought there’s more we can do to warn our beloved puppies, or those who fear loud noises, that fireworks are on the horizon.

We figured out SafeWork NSW had firework permit data, and contacted Victor Dominello MP to ask it to be incorporated into the Service NSW app so anyone can sign up for fireworks 💥 early warning ⚠️ notifications.

WIN! 🙋‍♀️ From April next year, you’ll be able to sign up to fireworks alerts in the Service NSW app - so whether you love fireworks, hate them or simply want to protect your beloved pet, you’ll know when and where they’re happening.

Thanks to Jessie for helping us improve our City of Sydney for the future! 🙋‍♀️👏🏼🐶

For those of you who have done a RAT test that has a little UV torch in it, please consider keeping them and passing them on to your local Veterinary clinic or Animal shelter.
Apparently they can use the lights to look for ringworm on animals and it only shows up under the black UV light. At present, the torches can cost anywhere from $10 up to $100.

Also, if you work in a medical facility that uses small disposable torches to test pupil response, please don’t throw them away. You can give them to women’s shelters and homeless shelters. Thank you.

Happy Paws Dog Sitting

Hi everyone, I am very passionate about dogs and so have decided to establish my own dog sitting business.

You can bring your fur babies to me and I will care for them as if they were my own. I have been surrounded by dogs and taken care of them for most of my life and I’ve fallen in love with it.

I live near dog friendly beaches and dog parks so you can rest assured knowing that your dog will be exercised well and have the time of their lives while in my company.

They will never be alone as I have a 2 year old cavoodle of my own named Charlie who loves to meet new people and dogs who are around the same size as her (small to medium).

I live on a medium sized fenced off lot (25m2 to 50m2) so smaller to medium size dogs would be better suited for the environment.

Feel free to contact me to schedule a meeting date so our dogs can meet and you and your fur baby can get a feel for the environment they will be staying in.

You will also receive photos and updates daily of your puppas so you can see the fun activities we get up to each day.

Requirements:
- Vaccinations must be up to date including flea and tick control
- Good with other dogs

Bye Bye!!

Sniffs N Wags is moving out of the Maitland area in December.

I'm offering private consultations in November up until I move but no classes. If you have any outstanding consultations please contact me now to schedule for you.

As always regardless of where I am if you have any questions I'm more than happy to help you out by phone/email or refer you to another positive reinforcement trainer.

This move is bittersweet for me as I say farewell to many pet sitting clients who I have looked after for many years. Thank you for trusting me with your most valuable furbabies.

I feel this quote is applicable even for dogs.

Many owners feel they have let their dogs down, especially during this pandemic where dogs havent been socialised as much or not left alone to gain confidence by themselves.

You cant change what has occurred but you can help your dog moving forward. Seek help from a positive reinforfement trainer.

Spend time with your dog. Get to understand your dogs behaviour and what they love to do. 🐕👍❤

New Programs for companion animals of the Maitland Region

For those who dont know who i am, my name is Dee and i run the Maitland Animal Management Facility formerly known as Maitland Pound.

For the past 7.5 years I have been not only running animal rescues but also impound facilities on the Central Coast.

Our aim is not only to run the pound to the best of our ability, help the animals but also help the community.

How do we do this? Well we have a number of programs and this is where you guys come into it. If we can get people following our page, people can choose what or if any, if they want to help. The more followers we have in the community, the better the success we have of helping the animals and their hoomans.

What are some of our programs?

🐾 Freedom Buster
🐾 Wednesday Wishlist
🐾 Feed me Friday
🐾 Saturday Solutions
🐾 Sunday Saviours
🐾 Rescue Warriors

Freedom Buster Program - This program helps owners who cannot afford to get their pets out of the pound and get them home again. This program has been hugely successful on the Coast because we reach out to the community to help each other. You may only be able to afford to give $10.00 but it all adds up and it helps someone doing it tough to get their beloved pet home. Whilst we all are entitled to our own opinion, I try not to judge anyone because we don’t often know their story or what’s happening in their lives. I often meet people I could slap and I meet people who are so lovely I could hug them. Life is tough for a lot of people and they are living week to week, does it mean they are bad people and don’t deserve an animal? No, absolutely not, the majority of the time their pets are their kids and they are grief stricken by the fact their beloved animal is in the pound and that they can’t help them. When things are tough for people, I try to remember one golden rule. It’s not about them, it’s not about us it’s about the animal. They need us, don’t get me wrong if I believe an animal is neglected or abused I will do what’s right by the animal and the animal only.
We would love your help to help these local families and so we will bring you their stories so you too can decide if you would like to help based on their stories.

Wednesday Wishlist - This is where we stickup what items we need for the animals or the facility. It could be treats for the dog’s or ice when we have scorching hot days right down to paperclips etc. people often ask how they can help, so we put up a list each week

Feed me Friday - Each week we do a call out to purchase a fresh butchers meal for the animals. Something out of the norm for them and they absolutely love it. It’s not easy for them being in a cage away from their homes and family, so we try to give them something to look forward to whilst they are waiting to go home or onto their new homes.

Saturday Solutions - This is our assisted rehoming program for those who need help in rehoming their pets whilst they are still at home.

Sunday Saviours - This program is to assist owners that have animals that need urgent medical help. Owners must provide a quote from a vet of what’s needed for their animal and we will fundraise for that amount. Whatever funds raised will be paid to the vet only.

Rescue Warrior - This is where we ask if you can help us help the animals by joining up to be a regular donator. As little as $5 per week helps us to keep rescuing animals from high kill facilities and transport them up to us for rehoming after we do all their vet work. As a registered charity, any donations over $2 are fully tax deductible.

We are a not for profit charity that is fully committed to helping not only the animals but their owners where possible. Life is tough enough , so if we can make a difference then that’s what we will strive to do everyday.

In the coming week we want to give back to the community by donating a number of microchips for those who have unchipped animals in the community.

What do you need to do?

🐾 Share the post and say done

Conditions?

💠 Must reside in the Maitland Government Area. Proof of residency will be required via identification
💠 Available by appointment only
💠 Facemasks & QR code is mandatory

We only have a set amount available so please don’t delay and book in as soon as possible.

Why is Microchipping so important?

👮 - It’s the law to have your pets chipped but there are so many more reasons why you should, such as;

🥷 - Helps determine ownership if your beloved pet is stolen

⛑ If your animal gets out and unfortunately gets hurt, the vets can call you straight away to let you know the situation. Sadly it maybe the only opportunity you get to say your goodbyes or give instructions on how to proceed

🖐 By having your animal chipped, people like vets and animal scanners out in the community can help get your animal home without the need to take it to a pound.

🔜 if your animal goes into an impound facility and we can get your furkid home sooner, the cheaper it is for you and the less stress on your furkids.

Which also leads us to why it’s also important to ensure your animals microchip details are kept up to date.

If you have moved, changed phone numbers or even your email. Update those details. You can even list a secondary contact, for example your partner, your best friend, even your parents details. Listing a secondary contact doesn’t give them ownership rights but it does help someone get in touch with you in the event of an emergency or if your pet needs you the most.

Services available at the facility:
🐶 Microchipping
🐾 Registrations
🐶 Updating of your details
🐾 Impounding of strays
🐶 Engraving of tags (From $7.50)

Programs outside of the facility:
🐾 Last Litter Program
❤️ Assisted Rehoming

Last Litter Program is if your dog or cat has had puppies or kittens. We will desex the mum in the event you surrender the offsprings. We will then microchip, vaccinate, flea & worm, desex and register them before finding them suitable homes. If they are a restricted breed ie red nose Pitbulls we will have them Government Assessed before rehoming. This way all animals go out completely compliant, into approved homes and god forbid they ever end up in a pound, it is easily affordable for their owners to get them home. The best part is we pay for your mum to be desexed so you don’t have to worry about her falling pregnant again or worse getting a life threatening condition like pyometra.

All puppies will go through a training program with Luke Evans at Doggy Daycare Farm Trips. This way each puppy not only goes out with the basic training but actual socialisation skills to give them their best chances of staying in homes and not being surrendered or euthanised due to behaviour issues. Luke and Sam have just been on Better Homes and Garden and A Current Affairs with some of our shelter dogs and we have to say we are very excited to be partnering with Luke and Sam to give these animals the best start in their lives.

We are a dedicated team striving to make a difference and believe we need to be part of the solution rather than being part of the problem.

If we can help, we will if we can’t, we will try to point you in the right direction.

“Alone we can do so little but together we can do so much”

As always stay safe, be kind and continue to be your awesome selves.

Much love to you all
Dee💋

I am super excited to be nearing completion of an Animal Aromatherapy Specialist Certification from a world-renowned veterinarian, Dr Janet Roark.

My motivation behind completing this course was so that I could broaden my knowledge on how to practically and safely use essential oils with animals.

The emotional, physical and behavioural benefits of essential oils is quite mindblowing and enables me to provide another level of care for your pets.

On a personal level I have been using essential oils with my own pets for concerns such as calming, travel sickness, allergies and even in my chicken coop to keep pests away.

If you are interested in learning how your pets can benefit from using essential oils I would love to chat 0408 600 457.

P L E A S E 😢 R E A D

On Saturday I made a special delivery to the Central Coast Animal Care Facility on behalf of 2️⃣ anonymous donors who just wanted to reach out and let the team know that they are loved 🥰

It came after the news that they had just lost their tender to remain at that location and now they only have 5️⃣ weeks to find a new place!

It’s a really trying time for them, and amongst it all, they are urgently seeking forever homes for all the animals that are currently residing there 🐶

So if you are looking for a new family member, please look here first 🐕

Now there are a few ways that we, as a community can help 😇

You may be a real estate agent who knows of a vacant premises, or you may have a suitable premises that they could lease from you, or someone you know - so any help in this area would be tremendous 👍

They are also reaching out for donations to help with the cost of relocating - if you are in a position to assist in that area, again, it would make a huge difference to helping Dee and the team find an urgent solution to this situation 👊

Link here ➡️ https://fundraise.giveeasy.org/campaigns/help-us-in-our-time-of-urgent-need/

We can do this Cakies 💪

This article puts into perspective loose lead walking. Your dog needs help, support and practice. Plus more practice :-).

One of my greatest annoyances is heeling being lumped in as “basic obedience” in our service dog’s training.

Now yes, it is a basic behavior in that it is one of the few absolutely required behaviors for all service dogs to know. But it is not “basic” as in a simple beginner skill that is easily mastered. It’s one of the most challenging behaviors you’ll train.

Why?

Because it’s not a single simple behavior like sit or down. It’s many behaviors. It’s:

- Walking at the right speed, and adjusting that speed as needed
- Staying close enough to the handler laterally (I like them 12inches or closer)
- Not getting too far ahead or behind
- Keeping tabs on their handler to be able to adjust speed and turn as needed
- Not sniff, greet people, or reach for anything unless cued

It also requires skills like:
- Being able to listen to the handler without looking at them or if they’re not looking at you.
- Body and spatial awareness to be able to do all the behaviors that make up heeling.

Heeling also requires the handler to understand things like:
- Rate or reinforcement
- Proofing behaviors in public
- Shaping
- Consistency
- And a ton more

And you and your dog have to do all of that around all the distractions and in all the places.

This is not something that is mastered overnight. Just like we don’t master driving a car overnight because driving a car fluently requires a lot more than sitting in the drivers seat, and understanding how to turn, go forward and stop. It requires a dozen behaviors, and a dozen skills, and responding to a dozen different cues (and understanding those cues have a hierarchy).

Probably more.

Heeling is exactly the same. We can stop the pulling quickly. But we can’t teach and proof a service dog heel overnight.

That’s why I hate it being lumped into the term “basic obedience,” it sends the message that it's a simple and easy to master skill, when that’s simply not true.

If you’re struggling with heeling, you’re not alone, but also stay tuned (make sure you’ve followed this page and joined the free group). We’ve got some really exciting heeling stuff coming out soon!

In these ever changing times with COVID we have seen an impact for our dogs with limited venues/places offering puppy classes; lack of socialisation as we stay at home; separation anxiety as we head back to work and copying with adolescent behaviours.....just to name a few.

Remember - You are not alone.

I am always happy to talk dog if you are prepared to take the time to understand and support your dog.

I have been in your situation where I loved my dog but thought I was not being the best owner. Breaking my heart at the thought I would need to rehome my dog. Unsure where or how to get help.

There is many positive reinforcement trainers locally who can help you. Not sure who they are, get in touch and I can help - Just call :-).

Great news - Prong collars to be banned in Tassie.

Great news out of Tassie - the state government has agreed to work with RSPCA Tasmania to ban the use of cruel pronged dog collars!

Pronged collars (also known as a pinch or constriction collar) are made of metal and are designed to tighten around a dog’s neck whenever pressure is applied, causing pain and potential damage to the windpipe, nerves and other tissues. It is used as a form of punishment in training.

Pronged collars are illegal to import into Australia, but they can still be used in some states - though they are already banned in Victoria.

Do you know who owns this dog? This sweet little boy was brought in to be scanned but unfortunately a microchip couldn't be found. About Sniffs N Wags

Several years ago I rescued a dog.....and then she rescued me.

Over the years I have owned many dogs (Irish Wolfhound, Bullmastiff, Boxer X, Shelties and the list goes on), attended Puppy Schools, Private Training and your traditional volunteer training organisations.

However, it was not until my dog started to chew doors, climb fences and bending wire (with her TEETH!!) that I learnt how debilitating it can be as an owner to have a dog with behavioural problems.

Many said to take her back to the rescue group but I embarked on an extensive Dog Training and Behavioural course with Delta.
