Please meet Elsa!
Patient Story! Elsa was brought to our hospital one Sunday evening because she was contracting for 2 hours between puppies. She had 4 puppies at home and was still contracting without any production of another puppy. The owners knew there were 10-11 puppies in the litter, once we reach 2-3 hours without another puppy we start to get worried. We did an abdominal radiograph and noticed the puppy at the birth canal was inappropriately positioned. We tried to manually reposition the puppy, unfortunately, we were unsuccessful and an emergency c-section was our only option. We got Elsa into surgery and successfully retrieved another 6 puppies. Elsa woke up beautifully from her surgery and her 10 healthy puppies were all nursing well. We called a week later for an update just to see how everything was going with this first time mom and her large litter of puppies, so far so good since going home! Dystocia is always scary and because of the quick actions of these owners, they got to bring home 11 healthy happy dogs. Thank you to Elsa's family for letting us share her story :)
Heartworm
I'm pleased to introduce "Jazz" to you as a patient story . . . Jazz presented to us for vomiting and bloody diarrhea. She was treated at the hospital for Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis (https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=2946). The diagnostic workup for this included in house blood analysis, which includes an evaluation of a blood smear by one of our RVT's. Well, we got a surprise!!!! Our RVT Laura found Heartworm! Not so great for Jazz, but it is treatable. We've been updated by Jazz's mom that she is doing well at home. Not a great video but you can see the worm wiggling in the top left area of the screen.
Meet Angel! This precious girl came in to see us because she was in distress during labor, what we call dystocia. She is a 5 year old Shih Tzu and this is her 4th litter. You can see 3 little puppy skeletons on the x-ray image. After we had the surgical suite all set up to do a cesarean section, she had whelped the first puppy all on her own! After she successfully delivered 1 puppy the doctor gave her a hormone injection of oxytocin to help labor progress by causing the uterus to contract.
Mom and puppies are doing very well at home now!
After Surgery
Meet our brave patient Bosco! She is a 12 year old Brittany Spaniel who likes to swim.
She had a mass on her front right leg by the elbow. Dr. Swayne, our board certified surgeon saw Bosco and diagnosed the mass as a soft tissue sarcoma. Due to the location and type of mass Dr. Swayne recommended amputation.
She is doing very well at home and once she's back in the pool will be unstoppable on 3 legs! Maybe use a lifejacket for the first swim Bosco! #patientupdate
