Fondant is put on top of the colony, either under or over the brood box, so no feeders are needed. It can be used as an autumn feed but is mainly used to top up over winter, when it is too cold to feed syrup, or in late winter when bees are running out of stores. Because it is placed directly over the cluster, the bees do not have to leave the cluster to access food, minimising the chance of starvation. Fondant is easy to handle and store and doesn’t cause robbing like syrup can.

It's been a swarmy season ladies and gents! Luckily we've been able to keep swarms to a minimal with aggressive splits. Of course, bees do what they want sometimes and we're not out of the water just yet.

Pictured is a couple of swarm cells. When you find these in your hive you know your girls are about to swarm. Our preferred method of handling this is splitting the hive and creating a "swarm simulation" if you will. You take the original queen plus some resources and a few frames of bees and add them to a new box. This tricks the original hive into thinking they've already swarmed. When you split them, make sure you leave all swarm cells in the now queenless hive. If you have a lot of swarm cells you can cull a few leaving 1 - 3 of the nicer cells. We also like to make sure these cells are close to each other and not spread throughout the hive. When the first queen hatches her first duty is to destroy the other cells/queens.

Do you mark your Queen's? We like to mark ours for many reasons. The most obvious being she's much easier to find. We have a colour code which indicates the year the queen was born, this helps with determining the age and vitality. If an unmarked queen appears then we know the old one was replaced.

Happy world bee day!!!

Today we are spreading the love of bee's & beekeeping to our customers. Nuc pick up is happening between 8am-1pm. We have folks looking to expand their apiary, replenish winter loss & many new beeks in the mix as well!
