๐พ I love working with guardian breed dogs. So majestic and so misunderstood by the world.
๐ฒ Where can I sign the petition??
๐พ The best way to describe showing up to work with Sasha is that it was like walking into a furry racecar zooming at you and exploding with affection.

๐พ Meet Kai
โค๏ธ 160 lbs of Great Pyrenees goodness! This incredible boy is doing his best to adapt to his new life as a city dog. He was surrendered to a shelter in pretty rough shape, but now has his dream family!
๐จโ๐ซ Like a lot of working breed guardian dogs he has had trouble adjusting to a pet dog life and struggles a bit with his behavior.
But he has amazing parents who are going all out to meet his needs and teach him how to live well!
The future is bright for this giant!

With labour day upon us just thought I'd put this here. ๐โ๐ฆบโค๏ธ
Thunderous noise is a terrifying thing to many dogs. It's that time of the year! For many dogs, the sound of thunder or fireworks can be incredibly distressing, causing anxiety and fear. As pet guardians, it is our responsibility to create a safe and comforting environment for our furry friends durin...
Stillness is hard when your emotions are big. Sometimes achieving the ability to do nothing but observe is a big win. You go, lil' man! ๐
๐จโ๐ซ If you think drama in the dog training industry is new, consider this.
๐ฎ 2400 years ago Xenophon publicly criticized other trainers for lack of breed knowledge, not using "science based" training, and referred to slip leads as "clumsy contrivances for controlling a hound".
Thousands of years ago there were hound masters hunting in the forests in loin cloths like:
Grog: I don't use harnesses. They cause pulling.
Grobug: OMG don't you know science!?
What the ancients had to say about dog training will surprise you.Xenophon, the Athenian philosopher and historian, lived in the 5th and 4th centuries BCE and is famous for his writings on a wide range of subjects, including history, politics, and philosophy. One of his lesser-known works, but proba...
I get asked a lot about what type of treats to use for training. The Liver Nibbles are perfect, and are already a great size for large dogs.
Single ingredient, I know the person who makes them, and I've literally been in the room they are made in.
Packing for Summerโs last long weekend? Donโt forget snacks for the dog! Sturdy, resealable packaging makes RyBites easy to take anywhere your adventures lead you!
๐๐พ Today was Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day and I thought a lot about Kona.
Kona Facts:
Sometimes if I told her to do something she didn't want to do she would comply in slow motion while holding eye contact with me.
She got kicked out of aggression training for being too dangerous. In the trainers defense, she was really into attempted murder.
She was Queen of the Silent Treatment. If she was displeased she could act like I didn't exist for hours.
I once tested how long she would sleep in if I didn't wake her up and I finally told her to get up at 2:45pm. She still acted like I was being unfair.
When excited she would stomp her front paws.
If I stayed up too late she would come out of our room and bark at me until I went to bed.
She would lay on me when I was anxious.
Blu and his Mom are ok with me naming my Trauma Program after him. ๐
In addition to the obvious advantages, one of the best things about education in dog training is fellowship and support.
I can ask any VSA Grad or CBATI in the world for help and almost certainly get it.
If any VSA Grad or CBATI asked me for help I would be there for them.
When you hire a certified dog trainer you are getting them - backed by their entire support network.

My sister's cat is missing. Anyone in the area please keep your eyes out!
Please spread the word for this lost cat. Bebe was LOST on August 17, 2024 in London, ON N6K 1X3 near Springbank and Jarvis street

I Rate Rare Big Breeds: the Rottle (Rottie-Poo)
Standard Poodle X Rottweiler
๐ 10/10 but they will cuddle your partner while making direct eye contact with you.
โค๏ธ They are doting, protective, gentle, and much more athletic than they appear. Stronger than the Poodle, more nimble than the Rottweiler, and very attentive and intelligent.
๐โ๐ฆบ Perfect for somebody who wants a big protective dog who is also a gentle and doting family companion. And I hope you like to cuddle and have a big couch!
๐คฃ Rottle stereotypes include being "velcro dogs", enjoying holding hands, being "nosy", being "sneaky", and stealing boyfriends.
โ๏ธ Expect to need: to help them learn to relax, behave calmly in frustration, and work with their prey drive.
๐จโ๐ซ Despite my well deserved glowing review this is not a dog for first-timers and meeting their needs can be trying.
Pictured: Kai the Rottle, who has curly hair in classic black and brown Rottie colors, cuddles with her Dad on the couch while staring directly at her mom. Dad is grinning happily.
When I was still in school I did my first Board & Train for my parents' new puppy, Tika. Nana decided that Tika was her baby and has been so motherly to her ever since.
I used Tika during those two weeks for some of my live skills assessments.
Love these memories!

๐พ Ramping up Sasha's excitement a bit before ending her session with a special Prey Treat.
This let's her safely practice the final segments of the predation sequence and satiate her inner huntress.
To help dogs with predatory behavior issues we:
1. Teach management and prevention.
2. Satiate hunting needs with predatory games.
3. Put safe parts of the predatory sequence on cue and enjoy "stalking" prey as a team.
4. Develop a solid "interrupt" Cue to pull attention away from prey.
๐พ Meet Rex the GSD/Aussie/Chow mix!
This handsome man is sweet as pie. But he can be a bit of a handful when he's excited. Owners of those breeds know exactly what I mean!
๐จโ๐ซ Research shows that it's hard to be calm when you're full of feelings and wiggles! Probably.
But luckily Rex has amazing parents ready to invest the time into teaching him to live well with them.
๐โ๐ฆบ๐ถโโ๏ธ We're going to start with some calmness training, add in some focus & engagement work, and polish up his basic manners like walking nicely on a loose leash.
Do you have a dog that needs help with their feelings and manners?
Let's talk!

๐โ๐ฆบ๐ถโโ๏ธ Big thanks to Kate Hendriks, fellow London dog trainer, and her assistant Labby!
Today they helped out with big Hemi's first BAT Setup session.
๐จโ๐ซ Labby is not a real dog but rather a very realistic type of decoy that trainers use for a variety of reasons.
Today Kate "walked" Labby in the park where we did our session to act as the "trigger" for our exposure therapy.
Thanks Kate! Hemi appreciates your help!
The change you've been waiting to see in your dog is hiding in the work you've been avoiding.
The best time to start would have been at the beginning. The second best time is NOW.

How do I correct a big dog that jumps a lot? Here's one way. Remove the opportunity to jump by rewarding for paws on the floor before he even thinks about jumping up. Use a high rate of reinforcement treat-to-floor while moving. When the dog approaches for more treats and isn't zooming in to jump, a couple treats-to-mouth. Redirect to another activity without giving time for excitement to ramp up again and without demanding a display of self-control. Repeat. A lot. Have people coming over do it. #dogtraining #positivedogtraining
One of my new students runs RyBites Dehydrated Pet Treats so I thought we would try some samples and see what Nana thinks. Nana says that she highly recommends these treats because they are delicious, made from simple ingredients in small batches, and support a small business owner in our community!

โ๏ธ Off-Leash Dog Parks One of the most common questions I get is: "When will it be OK to take my dog to a public dog park?" My answer is: "No." ๐ฒ Let's look at some uncomfortable truths.
Nana's medical trauma caused quite a bit of separation distress which is totally understandable. She was afraid to be apart and I get it. I am just as afraid as she is that she will have seizures when I'm not there to help. But if anyone is wondering how she's doing with it these days... This is her snoring 1 minute after I got home from a Session. She woke up when I came in, gave me kisses when I came over to say hello, and then went right back to sleep. Didn't even get up. โค๏ธ๐ ...now if anyone has advice on how to conquer MY separation distress I'm all ears lol.

I know my leash grip LOOKS like it would hurt the thumb. Let's find out... And keep in mind you have your off hand on the line as well taking some of the pressure. This grip is stable and comfortable.

They would not settle for nap time - too excited to hang out. So I deployed my secret weapon: calming music! If you want suggestions just let me know. #positivedogtraining
Like a lot of working breed dogs Duke has some trouble focusing and being polite on leash. Learning that "his job" on a walk is to stay close to his human and focus on them until being released to explore is a challenge. He loves powering ahead and pulling where he wants to go! But look at him focus! I love getting updates from students and this little video made my week! ๐ฅฐ
