Remembrance Day is a yearly memorial day that is held in many Commonwealth countries, including Canada, to remember those who died in military service, and honor those who fought in combat. Every year on November 11, the anniversary of the 1918 Armistice Accord that put an end to World War I, it is honored throughout Canada.

We tend to take for granted the freedom to participate in cultural and political activities, the right to live under the government of our deciding, and Canadian institutions and values.

By remembering their service and their sacrifice, we recognize the tradition of freedom these men and women fought to preserve. They believed that what they did now would have a big impact on the future, but it is our responsibility to make sure that their vision of peace comes to pass.

On the 11th month, of the 11th day of the 11th hour, we honor the bravery and selflessness of those who served their nation and recognize our duty to strive toward the peace they so valiantly sought.

Each November, Canine Lymphoma Awareness Day offers pet owners with a friendly reminder about this all too common condition. Pet cancer awareness is an important tool to help pet owners and their vets alike notice signals of illness earlier to hopefully result in better outcomes.

Any breed or age can be affected by canine lymphoma, although it is most common in middle-aged to older dogs, with Golden Retrievers, Basset Hounds, Beagles, and German Shepherds being at higher risk.

There are more than 30 different types of known canine lymphomas, all of which vary in aggressiveness, survival rates, and clinical signs. Researchers have only recently adequately recognized lymphoma as a collection of diseases with various subgroups. Still, there is a lot we don’t know about what causes lymphoma in dogs. Between 7 to 24 percent of canine malignancies are lymphomas.

A fine-needle aspiration is the most widely used diagnostic technique. This takes a sample of a dog's organs or lymph nodes. This sample will be examined by a veterinarian using either a biopsy (looking at a slice of tissue) or a cytology exam (looking at a particular type of cell).

While cancer is not absolutely preventable at this point in time, you can also keep your pet as healthy as possible by keeping up on routine wellness checkups at your family veterinarian, complying with annual screening guidelines, supporting a healthy body weight, and keeping your pet active. There are numerous variables that can affect your dog's health due to the complicated nature of lymphoma.

Some signs of cancer that pet parents should be aware of include:
- Swelling of the lymph nodes that continues to enlarge (this can happen in the dog’s neck, chest, and behind the knees)
- Red, irritated patches which become ulcerated
- Loss of weight, vomiting, and diarrhea (which accompanies gastrointestinal lymphoma)
- Difficulty breathing (found in dogs with mediastinal lymphoma)
a sore that will not heal
- Weakness and loss of interest in physical activities

November 3rd to 9th is National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week!

The province of Alberta has a number of great rescues that help contribute greatly to the wellbeing of animals both big and small. They encourage ethical pet ownership, provide sick animals medical care and treatment, and offer secure refuge for stray, abused and abandoned animals. Animal shelters aid to promote population control. Shelters work tirelessly to rehabilitate these animals and prepare them for adoption into loving homes.

One important resource for anyone wishing to adopt a pet is animal shelters. In along with providing a worthy animal with a second shot at life, adopting from a shelter helps to lower the demand for animals from breeders and puppy mills. Those working in animal shelters work tirelessly to provide in need animals with the best care along with working with their local Veterinarians to make sure all the animals in their care are happy and healthy.

However, there are not just rescues for dogs and cats, we have several rescues in Alberta that also work hard to rescue in need horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, alpacas, birds and wildlife!

Here's a few ways you can help out animal shelters in need;
- Donate pet food
- Foster a pet to help them prepare for a new home
- Donate litter, p**p bags and essential cleaner
- Stop by an walk a dog
- Volunteer some time helping them around the shelters
- Support their fundraisers
- Adopt a shelter pet and give an animal a second chance
- Help spread awareness around your community for support
- Donate old/new toys, bedding, etc...

Reach out to your local rescue to see how you can help today!
