Hollie, owner of Kent Animal Training, has been training animals for over 15 years. Having studied with the IMDT (Institute of Modern Dog Trainers) and ABTC (Animal Behaviour Training Council), she spends most of her time sharing her knowledge to help train dogs of all breeds, ages and temperaments. Hollie's approach is always welcoming and she is someone who is always ready to help. Seeking guida

Although Hollie spends most of her time helping owners train their dogs, she has experience training horses, cats and parrots. Hollie also has experience training a number of different species (including wolves, chimpanzees, bears, otters, tigers and more) and is a Zoo Animal Training Officer responsible for overseeing the creation, development and implementation of training and behaviour modification programmes.
Hollie is based in the Kent area, is able to travel for appointments and is flexible with bookings to suit your needs.

Bailey.
Bailey is a rescue English Pointer, and has a few issues when out and about on walks.
He can be quite fearful of other dogs, but is generally quite anxious and reliant on routine, and struggles to cope when there are any changes to this.
We are putting some management in place, brushing up on our engagement and teaching him some skills to help him going forward as well as to build his confidence
We had more graduations this weekend!
Well done to our Level 1 gundogs! Looking forward to seeing them later on for level 2 to progress on all the skills they have aced so far!

This is Uly.
Uly is an incredibly nervous young lad. Walks have been stressful to say the least, as well as any changes in the home.
His owners are super dedicated, and keen to support him to make sure he can have a happy life olin his new home with them.
Going to take things at his pace, keeping him comfortable and feeling safe so we can build his confidence.

These two Viszla pups are a lot to handle. Their owners got to it straight away and got booked in with our 121 puppy package as well as our puppy group class.
Group class ticks the box of engagement, socialisation and not being obsessed with other dogs. The 121s alongside it supports the training we cover in class, as well as tackling those common Puppy problems or indovisual challenges faced for each household.
These guys are awesome to work with!

On our way back from an awesome 2 days with my Scent work family at The College Of Scent Dogs Ltd . I did have an outfit for day 1, but it was just so cold on day 2!

This little lad is Boss.
Being an Akira, his owners knew it was important to get on top of his training and socialisation early on. They booked him in for puppy 121s and enrolled in the puppy class to make sure they ace his training.
Motivation and distractions are a big thing- he's not much of a foodie, but clearing up communication helped big time in our first session.

Puppy foundations last night! We covered meeting other dogs on lead, LLW, turns away from distractions, settle and the confidence course. We had a major break through with young echo who has been super nervous of all the equipment- all that was needed was a ball pit full of balls! Well done to all 3 of them!

Being an XL Bully, his puppy parents wanted to hit the ground running and set him up to be a dog that walks nicely on the lead.
Teaching your dog to follow you is a sure fire way to start off getting those Loose lead walking fundamentals in!

Our scent dogs in training started work on their indications this week.
The College Of Scent Dogs Ltd indication stations were out and following confirming all dogs have scent I.d, we can now start shaping this important component of search dog training.
We've got a few motivation issues and sensitivities but all the dogs worked really hard and did amazing in their session! Can't wait to get them searching linear next week!
And our last late graduates last week were the Juniors! They absolutely smashed their assessments considering they've had a big break for this last session. I hope to see some of them return for some more group classes as they were a fantastic group!

What a lovely morning for it. We finished off exposing the dogs to all equipment, even overcoming some initial hesitancies around the dog walk and the tunnels!

Tunnels and the wobble board- both changed in texture and a moving surface.
This is the most important part of socialisation training- which should be renamed to exposure training. Exposing our pups to new sights, smells, sounds and textures all through positive experiences to prep them for being an emotionally robust adult dog. It is not meeting every dog and person.

Last week we finally had our graduation for the Advanced obedience students!! They have done really well, battling teenage angst and the rain! Well done guys. Hopefully see them back for some fun sports training !

What a brilliant bank holiday morning at Macknade judging the fun dog show for Happy Endings Rescue .
Had some awesome costumes, some very baggy tails and lots of fun!

This beautiful little lad is Zeus.
Zeus is a South African Mastiff/ Boerbel. His owners wanted to make sure they hit the ground running with his training, so they signed up for the 121 puppy sessions as well as puppy classes.
He is an absolute dream to work with and takes everything in his stride. A little spooked by most things at the moment, it's really important that we build his confidence so he grows into a secure adult dog.
This is Remy.
Remy pulls on walks... ALOT! He also gets super excited when he sees other dogs.
His owners attend regular training classes with other dogs and copes fine. However out and about, the surprise takes over and overexcited teenager rears it's ugly head.
We started with some simple manners in the house and our walk starting ritual.

Hunters owners rehomed him from a pretty miserable existence - not walked, restricted to a crate most of the time- his world was very small.
Unsurprisingly, he can struggle with his emotions when around new people and dogs. Life in the office was a bit of a nightmare with this rambunctious teenager. So, to make it more harmonious for everyone involved we introduced some helpful boundaries, a get out clause for Hunter and some basic obedience skills. Look at him chilling out!

Meet Bobby. . Bobby is an overseas rescue Dachshund mix. Walks are incredibly overwhelming and we've also had some aggression towards new people in the house. . His owners are super dedicated and doing everything they can to support him. He is not a social dog- he would much rather not meet or interact with other dogs and will sit quite calmly during these sessions. This is often what the other dog needs- no reaction to their reaction. . Loose lead walking. . It's one of the hardest things to try and teach our dogs because 1. Our dogs are naturally much faster than us 2. It's a really bizarre concept to have an animal on a bit of string 3. We are just not that interesting out and about! . Competing motivators, environmental factors, previous learning or training experience, too high expectations, overwhelm, hormones are just a few things that can make training this a challenge. . It is not something that comes naturally to dogs nor is it something we should expect them to do "for the love they have for us". No. Dogs are not robots. We need to teach them why it's a good idea to stick near us, create incentives and habits and be consistent with them. Then we set small, achievable goals so we don't get disheartened and frustrated at our end of the lead. . It happens to us all. . Instagram and Facebook are full of trainers showing off their own training journey but normally it's the polished result. You don't normally see where it goes wrong. . Here is an example of my training NOT going to plan with my own pup. I wanted to work both the boys together but I had severely underestimated the amount of self control needed for Watson (the pup) and how much of a distraction Darwin would be for him . Its ok when you take steps backwards or the journey isn't plain sailing. Juniors class went introduced their "middle" behaviour. This is such a nice exercise, and as well as being fun to teach, it's got some really handy uses in real life scenarios. . Not only is it great for nervous dogs, by providing them a safe position in the presence of triggers, it can also fill the owner with confidence, as a control position. I also like to tag this on the end of our recalls, to make these more fun and engaging for the dog. It also, just is quite a cool trick to show off with. . Frank does not like some dogs. . Frank has been rushed by off lead black dogs, leading to him becoming increasingly nervous and reactive around unfamiliar, large, black dogs. . Throw back to a few months back with Watson, working on some Livestock engage/disengage. . This was probably the 2nd time he'd seen Sheep. Each time he looks away from the sheep, he gets rewarded. . Very good for a 4 month old pup! . At the moment, a lot of ewes you see when out on a walk will be pregnant. Loose lead walking with Bourbon. . Bourbon has been smashing his exercises that I've set throughout our sessions. We haven't had an incidence of guarding at all, and we are definitely improving with our alert barking and jumping up at visitors. . Here he is working on his Loose lead walking.
