If ‘ewe’ experienced abortions in your flock this year, did you test for Toxo or Enzootic Abortion in Ewes (EAE)? A 2020 survey conducted by Ceva Animal Health and the NSA revealed that a high percentage of farmers whose flocks experienced abortions during the 2019/20 season did not ask their vet to investigate the cause!
A diagnosis of the cause of abortion means preventative measures, such as vaccination, can be put in place to prevent future losses. For the main causes of sheep abortion, EAE and Toxo, vaccination is one of the only robust ways to prevent it in your flock.
Contact your vet on 01296 745376 to discuss vaccination if you don’t already vaccinate.

🐑This is a reminder to please keep ALL DOGS ON A LEAD when around livestock.🐑
Today a dog attack on a local flock of sheep resulted in severe injuries. One sheep tragically lost her ears in the incident, two further sheep had serious injuries, and another died. Authorities are investigating the attack.
This is a preventable incident, and has resulted in loss of life. We've put the photos that the farmer has shared with us behind some warning shots as they are pretty graphic, so please don't look if you're of a sensitive disposition.
🚜🐄 Attention livestock farmers! 🐑🚜
The Animal & Plant Health Agency (APHA) has issued a warning about increased early-season tick activity. Ticks were found on livestock throughout the winter, and warmer weather in February may lead to heightened tick activity earlier than usual this year.
Ticks are more than just a nuisance; they can spread diseases like Anaplasmosis in people and cause Babesiosis and tick born fever in your herd. Ticks also infest sheep where they cause tick-borne fever, tick pyaemia, and louping ill. Regularly check your animals for ticks, especially around the ears, neck, and underbelly. Use tick prevention methods such as insecticidal ear tags, pour-on treatments, and pasture management to keep your animals healthy and productive.
Keep alert and take the necessary precautions to protect your animals. Ring your vet if you are unsure which product to choose - the office no is 01296 745376.

We're sad that it's Lucy's last day! Good luck to her for her residency and for everything she does in the future!
Today we say goodbye to our lovely Lucy.
Lucy is leaving us to go to the Royal Veterinary College to start a residency in equine internal medicine. A residency is a three-year programme of intensive clinical training that will enable her to become a specialist, after sitting a series of exams.
Lucy has said:
“I’ve loved my time with Hampden Equine and am sad to go! Everyone has been so welcoming and supportive, and I will miss the team, my clients and all your lovely horses, ponies and donkeys.”
Whilst we are sorry to see her go we are very excited for her to have this amazing opportunity, and wish her the best of luck in her future career.

🚨 Attention Sheep Farmers! 🚨
Nematodirus battus eggs have been detected in lambs across the country for a few weeks now. 🐑 While worm egg counts are helpful, remember that clinical signs can appear before eggs are present.
Remember, if you bring a dung sample to us on a Wednesday for an in-house faecal egg count, we will run this half price for you!
The current Nematodirus forecast for our area is LOW, but it is a good idea to keep an eye on the tracker at https://www.scops.org.uk/forecasts/nematodirus-forecast/.

🐑Proper post-operative care is vital for animals who have undergone caesareans. Here are some tips to ensure their speedy recovery: Provide a clean and comfortable space for your animal to rest and recover. Keep the area free from debris and ensure good ventilation. Keep a close eye on the incision site for any signs of infection or inflammation. If you notice any excessive redness, swelling, or discharge, contact us immediately. Follow your vet's instructions carefully regarding any medications or antibiotics prescribed for your animal. Give them on schedule and complete the full course as directed. Offer your animal fresh water and high-quality feed to support their recovery. Ensure they have easy access to food and water at all times. #postoperativecare #farmanimals #caesariansections #cattle #sheep #farmvets #hampdenvets #cows #LivestockCare #PostOpRecovery #VeterinaryCare #caesareanrecoverytips

This is a gorgeous little heifer who had an accident at 5 days old which fractured the top of her leg. As the fracture is so high up the leg it was very difficult to cast and the chance of success is generally low. Luckily we’ve had previous success with these fractures and the farmer was keen to give her the best chance of survival. At 5 weeks of age we went back to apply a new cast. This video was taken 6 weeks after that. She’s a great success story – and a testimony to the brilliant aftercare from our farmer as well! #hampenvets #farmvets #fracturedleg #heifer #calf #cast #cattlearemarvellous #healingwell #successstory

🦙🦙An interesting surgery case - we attended this alpaca to remove a lump this week. Everything went smoothly, and here he is up and awake post-op. We were called to assist at a calving yesterday where the heifer had got to a certain point and wasn't progressing any further, despite the waterbag being out. Vet Hannah turned up and soon had things put to rights, with this lively little chap up and suckling in short order! Yesterday one of our vets attended the Worshipful Company of Woolmen's 10th Annual Sheep Drive across Southwark Bridge as the on-duty vet. This is done by the Freemen of the City of London to exercise their right to move their animals in and around the City of London. This goes back to medieval times, when the Freemen of the City were excused the bridge toll that had to be paid by others crossing the bridge, in recognition of their status as local traders. Originally this would have been London Bridge, but has been switched out for Southwark Bridge in modern times. This is done in support of two charities, #thewoolmencharity and The Lord Mayor's Appeal. The objectives of the Woolmen Charity are to promote the wool industry and interest in wool, wool products, sheep farming, shearing, wool production and textiles and design; research into appropriate veterinary procedures and practices; education relevant to the wool industry; and to promote the City of London in general and the Livery movement in particular. There were also displays of skills and crafts from bygone days, wool stalls, and, of course, food stalls! The day was held to be enjoyable by all, and a big thank ewe was said to all participants at the end of the day - all's wool that ends wool! #sheep #sheepdrive #farmvets #hampdenvets #charity #wool #sheepinthecity #liveryfair #youngfreemen #visitthecity #september2023

A simple way to check your soil health We can all agree that healthy soil = healthy livestock. A really simple way to check your soil health is to do a simple water infiltration test. It's essentially checking for earthworm and old root channels in the soil. What you're looking for is quick drainage into the soil - ideally aiming for 2-5 minutes for healthy light and medium soils. #soilhealth #soilquality #soil #environment #waterinfiltration #waterinfiltrationtest #soiltesting #livestockfarming #livestock #biodiversity #sustainablefarming
Here are some lovely cattle we saw out on farm this week! And a gentle reminder for you that we are heading into the bank holiday weekend. We will be back in the office at 08:30 on Tuesday for all your normal veterinary needs. As ever, the duty vet is available over the long weekend, should you require our services!
Flockdown was lifted earlier this week, and one of our farmers has kindly shared with us a video of their birds' first taste of the outside world for quite some time! Lovely to see them out and exploring. DEFRA are stll urging all poultry and bird keepers to remain vigilant to prevent any further outbreaks of disease. Dr Christine Middlemiss, the UK’s Chief Veterinary Officer, said: “Whilst the lifting of the mandatory housing measures will be welcome news to bird keepers, scrupulous biosecurity remains the most critical form of defence to help keep your birds safe. “It is thanks to the hard work of all bird keepers and vets who have played their part in keeping flocks safe this winter that we are in a position to take this action. However, the unprecedented nature of this outbreak has proven it’s more important than ever for bird keepers to remain vigilant for signs of disease and maintain stringent standards of biosecurity.” #poultry #chickens #farmvet #spring2023
