Five teams joined me on Wednesday for some Mantrailing fun. It started out dry and then the heavy rain came so we were all soaked by the end! These teams are all used to the rain though as they have been out in it all winter with me 🤣❤️

We had a mixture of trails all tailored to each team’s own progression.

Team Ben were back and we worked on Ben’s motivation to get started.

For Team Wren it was their first time in this location and it was all about fun and confidence building.

Team Humphrey smashed their slightly longer trail through the housing estate.

Team Denver and Team Finn had decoys to contend with and made it look super easy.

We finished off with walking trail layers for all of the teams. Team Ben did the best ever stop of the trail layer - Look out 👀 for the video!

It was a lot of fun despite the weather and we had a few laughs along the way! Thank you everyone for a super fun session ❤️🐾

It was a rainy session for our Tuesday trailers but that didn’t stop the fun!

We had trails with road crossings, trails with surface changes moving from tarmac to grass, fun trails to build motivation, Thea joined her mum and learnt about being a trail layer, we looked at how we can influence and impact our dogs with our own movements on trails……….

Lots of fun and learning even when we were all soaked 🤣❤️🐾

Our Thursday trailers had a fun packed session.

The weather was on our side and we had trails with surface changes, through garages and alleyways, hunting trails around the park, first time urban trailing for Mana, we introduced chase games for Red and flipped handlers so he trailed his mum to begin with and then he trailed me (I love being a trail layer!)

Target sniff at the start was a focus so we had scent articles out of bags and Tor took scent from a pumpkin scoop.

We finished off with trails from the parked cars (with a scent pool to work through) to a trail layer hiding in a vehicle followed by a super fun intensity trail.

Lots of learning and lightbulb💡moments and tonnes of fun. The energy of the group was just fab and the dogs did amazing ❤️🐾

🐶 Dogs' Incredible Sense of Smell 🐾

Did you know that a dog's nose is absolutely incredible? Their sense of smell is like what sight is to us humans. Here are some fascinating facts about their superior olfactory abilities:

👃 The moist tip of their nose captures smells carried by the wind, allowing them to pick up scents from the air.
👃 Each nostril can smell separately, making it easier for them to locate the source of a smell.
👃 They have a staggering 300 plus million smell receptors in their nose, compared to humans who only have 5 million.
👃 Dogs exhale air through slits on the sides of their nose, ensuring that incoming scents are not polluted.
👃 Their olfactory cortex, the part of the brain that processes smells, is about 40 times larger than ours.
👃 Dogs also have a special olfactory system called the vomeronasal organ, which detects hormones from other animals and humans. This allows them to sense things like our emotions, as well as conditions like cancer or pregnancy.

Have you ever experienced "inattentional deafness" or being so focused on something that you temporarily ignore sounds? Humans can experience this phenomenon when concentrating on visual tasks. Similarly, when dogs are fully engaged in sniffing, they may not hear you right away. So, be patient and wait for them to finish "reading their favorite book" before calling them over. Remember, they're not ignoring you on purpose!

Let's appreciate and marvel at the incredible sense of smell that dogs possess. They truly are remarkable creatures! 🐾❤️

I LOVE this post from Ana Wonderdog Trailing &Training Lancaster. As humans it’s sometimes all about being better, faster, doing longer trails, etc. but strong foundations and building motivation for the game and really tapping into what works for your dog is way more important (as well as having fun together as a team). The longer, more complex stuff will come and when it does it will be even more wonderful. I’m almost 3 years into Mantrailing with Roxy and it took me a good two years to feel like things had properly clicked into place (all the bits joining up, me being able to read her properly, confidence in line handling and knowing when to step in to name a few things) and I’m still learning and tweaking things now. Don’t rush things, trust the process, make tweaks when you need to and most importantly have fun together ❤️

Home from a fantastic three days of Mantrailing Mastery in Lancaster with Trailing K9s and Borders Mantrailing & Scent Training. A full on three days with lots of learning and challenges.

The urban environments were challenging for Roxy but we had a fabulous support network and she worked her trails super well and most importantly we were a team having fun together.

There’s too many highlights to write about and my brain needs to recharge before I can process everything properly as I am super super tired!

It’s been great meeting and catching up with other instructors (especially Ana from Wonderdog Trailing &Training Lancaster and Amy from Northumberland Dog Sports who were on my instructor course), meeting some super Mantrailing addicts and watching other teams work together ❤️🐾

Five teams joined me on Sunday for some Mantrailing fun in the sun. Shorter trails with some problem solving elements were completed as the temperatures were a lot warmer than what the dogs have been used to. It was also interesting to watch how the dogs worked the scent in warmer temperatures and the surfaces and objects they used to help them. We also had team Billy and team Frank on their introduction session. Both teams made great progress over their three trails and had really started to get into the game! I’m looking forward to seeing you both again for some more Mantrailing fun ❤️🐾

Five teams joined me for some Mantrailing fun on Wednesday night. The lighter nights and warmer weather means that places are getting busier.

Teams had lots of distractions - other people, off lead dogs, football matches and cats! We also had trail layers lying down and fully hiding in bushes and long grass which was a new experience for them.

Each team worked on their own progression and we had a variety of starts and trails and mixed up some of the rewards.

A wonderful evening of trailing (lots of fun and learning) with a fabulous bunch of humans and dogs. Thank you for joining me everyone ❤️🐾

Happy German Shepherd Day to all of our shepherds ❤️🐾 A loyal, loving, quirky breed! Life with a German Shepherd isn’t always easy. They’re big dogs with sometimes big feelings but I know I wouldn’t change my girl for the world. My greatest teacher, loyal, loving and the most fun. Loves balls 🎾, Tuggy, Mantrailing and Cuddles. Such a fun session tonight. The dogs were amazing and gave us some really clear trailing behaviours (as well as some laughs along the way!) The handlers were also very good at picking up on changes in body language and knowing when the dogs were on and off trail/checking areas. We had trail layers hidden in bushes 🤣, cat distractions, decoys and some tricky scent puzzles whipped up by the wind. I’ve loved watching the videos back ❤️ ❤️🐾

28/04/2024

I’ve had a few enquiries about Mantrailing Introduction sessions so some dates have been added for June……..

It’s the best game ever! Come and see how much fun it is for dog and human. Fun and laughs guaranteed 😃🐾

Three teams joined me for some wet and windy Mantrailing fun. We had open spaces, surface changes, walking finds (trail layers) and other dog and squirrel distractions.

Each team worked on their own progression and we focused on our target sniffing at the start of our trails.

Claire and Pepper also earned their first Mantrailing badge🌟

We tried a new location on Wednesday night which offered us surface changes, open areas, grass and urban elements including road crossings.

We had some longer trails with changes of direction, shorter trails to help build motivation, split trails (where two people go out together and then split off) and we managed to get all but two trails in before it went dark!

Lots of learning and fun as always. Thank you for joining me everyone 🐾❤️

A cracking morning of trailing in the sunshine. We were able to do rural and semi urban trails and some of our newer dogs did their longest trails so far. The wind made things tricky at times and there were some scent puzzles to work out as well as some off piste and some hidden junctions/paths for the teams to navigate with trail layers hidden in bushes and long grass/ferns which the dogs jumped through with no hesitation. It’s so lovely to see all of the teams becoming more confident and making some really nice decisions ❤️🐾

We had a mixture of rural and urban trails on Tuesday night with wildlife distractions a plenty. The teams rose to the challenge and worked hard to find their trail layers.

We experimented with hard object scent articles versus fabric to see how each dog took scent on different materials.

Some urban trails took in road crossings, some started in rural and ended in urban so the dogs had to work over surface transitions. We also had trail layers under camouflage netting!

Half of the trails were in daylight followed by half in the dark and of course we had rain! Is it even trailing if there’s no rain?! It won’t be long before we have full evening sessions in the light now 😊

Lots of learning and lightbulb moments for the teams tonight and some things to work on going forward.

Thanks for joining me as always ❤️🐾 ❤️🐾

Five super teams joined me for some Mantrailing fun this morning. We worked on starts, shorter lines, junctions, some road crossings, and Team Bella joined us for their introduction ❤️🐾 We also looked at trailing behaviours for each team when they were on and off trail. Four teams also aced their scent article starts 😊

Lots of learning and some great decisions were made as the teams navigated their way to their trail layers. A fabulous morning with lovely sunshine (and a bit of wind as always!). Thank you for joining me everyone 🥰🐾

We had a fabulous day with Jay K9 Mantrailing working on aged trails in wide open space with an ever changing wind that made it trickier. My girl worked her paws off.

We started the day with a trail that was aged almost 2 hours, worked our way up to over 5 hours aged on our 3rd trail and finished the day by working a trail that was over 23 hours old!! (Yes you read that right!)

We know our dogs noses are AMAZING but this is mind blowing! My girl took scent and trailed like it had been freshly laid.

The best way to spend a day off having fun with my girl and the best bunch of humans and dogs❤️🐾

Thanks for a super day and fab pics

Three teams joined me for some urban trailing tonight and we got all of our trails in whilst it was still light! The progress these three teams are making is amazing 😍The wind was quite challenging tonight so we made trails a bit shorter and each team had decision points to tackle.

Team Wren are growing in confidence and Wren is now flying off at the start. She also made some great decisions and was able to find her way back to the trail after overshooting her turn 🌟

Team Jess have come such a long way. This older girl loves to trail and worked through some tricky scent movement 🌟

Team Koda were on fire tonight. Lots of great decisions and they made finding a trail layer hidden in a car look super easy 🌟

Such a fabulous session tonight. I love seeing teams learning, having fun and growing in confidence together ❤️🐾

We got our trails in before the wind really picked up but it was still blustery and gusty especially in the open spaces. The ground was much drier too so the teams had to work hard to work out where the scent was.

We had surface changes, decision points, people, dog, cat, squirrel, bird and blowing leaf distractions!

We had fun hunting trails for some, a variety of different starts and we finished with some walking trail layers.

Lots of learning today and a variety of trailing styles which was lovely to observe as well as a fab group of humans.

Thank you for joining me everyone 🐾❤️

It was a rainy session for our Tuesday evening trailers who joined me for some urban fun. We had surface changes, alleyways, parks, pavements and some tricky scent movement in the open space. We also managed to get quite a few trails in before it went dark!
Each team worked at their own pace on their own progression. We had a variety of starts, some longer trails and some trails with a bit more thinking involved. Lots of fun and learning even if it was a bit wet! Thank you for joining me everybody 🐾🥰

Six teams joined me for Easter Egg Hunt Trails. The teams had to locate eggs which their trail layer had dropped along the trail. They then had to answer trailing related questions to collect items to decorate their Easter Bonnets before pursuing their walking trail layers. They then had clues to go and find their golden eggs which had been hidden in the area!

We had Easter themed scent articles and the teams had lots of wildlife and environmental distractions as well as people and dogs, decision points/junctions, open space and some urban elements too.

Special shout out to Team Percy who came back for their first progression session following their introduction last November. Percy got straight back into the game with confidence and took to his trails with ease🌟

It was a fun filled morning. Thank you so much for joining me and getting into the Easter theme 🐣🥚🐰
