Please check your dogs for grass seeds as they are very common this time of year! Check places like in between toes and armpits with your hands as they can be difficult to spot. If they are left they can work their way into the blood stream and become very dangerous 🌾

Blue Green Algae

This can be very toxic for dogs, for some, fatal.

It is a term used to describe a group of bacteria called Cyanobacteria. It is commonly found in non flowing water. Certain conditions in the warm/hot weather can allow it to grow quite fast and form a 'bloom'.

Don't allow dogs to swim in or drink water you suspect may contain any blue green algae. The algae can get trapped on the fur of a dog and, when they groom themselves can ingest it.

Symptoms can appear within minutes or a few hours. These can include:
➡️ Vomiting and diarrhoea
➡️ Drooling
➡️ Confusion
➡️ Difficulty with breathng
➡️ Collapse
➡️ Seizures

If you suspect that your dog has been in contact with blue green algae, seek veterinary advise immediately.

Did you know Easter is one of the busiest time of year for Veterinary practices?
Mainly because Easter brings lots of treats that can be toxic to your dog.

✅ It is a great idea to give children an ‘Easter Box’ so anything edible they receive for Easter is safely put away in the box & placed out of your dogs reach.

🐣Easter Eggs (or chocolate of any kind!) contains theobromine which is toxic to dogs. The darker the chocolate the more toxic it is.

✅Vets Now have a ‘chocolate calculator’ which shows if the amount of chocolate your dog has ingested is cause for concern. https://dog-chocolate-calculator.vets-now.com/ .

🐰Hot cross buns & Easter biscuits contain sultanas and currants which again can be toxic to dogs.

🐣Spring flowers such as daffodils, lillies & tulips are toxic to dogs.
It’s important to note all parts of the flower can be poisonous even if your dog drinks the water.

🐰Easter grass (plastic grass that is found in Easter baskets) is appealing to dogs but once ingested can cause an obstruction.

🐣 Macadamia nuts & sweets containing xylitol are poisonous to dogs. It’s always best to place ‘sweet treats’ out of reach of your dog.

✅If you think your dog has eaten something poisonous, please always err on the side of caution and phone your Vet immediately for advice.

✅Never give your dog anything to make him or her sick. Doing so could cause more harm than good. Always seek a professional opinion from your Vet.

✅Animal PoisonLine is run by the Veterinary Poisons Information Service (VPIS) and is the only 24-hour specialised emergency telephone service in the UK dedicated to helping pet owners who are worried their pet may have been exposed to something harmful or poisonous. https://www.animalpoisonline.co.uk/
Contact tel number: 01202 509000
Call fees are around £45.

I hope this information helps & I wish you & your dogs a fun filled & most importantly safe Easter.
