In May we had the pleasure of inviting Alex Hawkins and his second year surgery resident Pius Spiesshofer from RVC Equine to our clinic to perform back surgery on one of our patients. We are glad to report that he has been doing very well through the first few weeks of his rehabilitation and we look forward to seeing what he gets up to in the future on his return to athletic work! ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€โš•๏ธ๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿฉธ

A couple of weeks ago this little one managed to get herself in trouble whilst rubbing her face. Lauren visited her in the early of hours of the morning to patch her lower eyelid up and we were very glad to see this week that she is healing very nicely and is right back to her usual cheeky self! ๐Ÿชก๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿ‘๏ธ

Foaling season is officially here! This lovely mare recently required an emergency out of hours visit, after she retained her foetal membranes post-foaling. This condition can be fatal without prompt intervention. Thankfully she responded to treatment and passed the rest of the membranes intact. Mum and baby are now doing well, although we suspect sheโ€™s going to have her hands full with this boisterous boy!

A couple of weeks ago two of our vets Dani & Lauren had the pleasure of attending Billericay Riding Clubs Spring Camp held at Radley Green Equestrian Centre. The evening was an interactive session including a dissection and lots of interesting talking points involving distal limb anatomy and hoof health. We hope that everyone who attended had as much fun as we did and enjoyed the rest of their weekend on the camp!

May is our gastric health month where weโ€™re discussing all things related to the health of the equine stomach!

Our gastroscopy clinic rate is extended to all gastroscopes carried out in May which are 20% off the usual price of a gastroscope.

A gastroscopy examination uses a very small thin endoscope which is passed via the nostril and swallowed. This is then advanced all the way down their oesophagus until we reach the stomach. This is the most reliable way to provide an accurate picture of what may be going on in your horses stomach.

If you have any questions about the procedure then weโ€™d be happy to answer them for you and put your mind at rest about how it is carried out.

Spot the Welshies! This week we had three lovely Welsh ponies in the clinic for advanced dental work by Equine Dentistry Referrals. Each patient required an extraction of a cheek tooth, a procedure that requires a lot of skill and even more patience! Happily everything went very well and we hope these ponies will be much more comfortable now ๐Ÿ™‚

Fantastic to see one of our lovely clients and patients back out and enjoying what they both love!
This handsome lad came to visit us due to becoming lame in front this winter, after a lameness work-up at our clinic and some diagnostic imaging we located the pain to his feet and then more specifically his coffin joints. Following the diagnosis of significant side bone and osteoarthritis in both coffin joints at just 11 years old we opted for intra-articular treatment with Arthramid. After a short period of rest and rehab here he is back in the show ring this weekend. We wish them all the best for this season and look forward to seeing them out again soon!

A few months ago we posted about a patient of ours that was diagnosed with kissing spines. This is where the spinous processes (the uppermost parts of the spine) are too close together, causing friction and pain. In February she underwent surgery at our clinic to correct this.
The photos below show X-rays from before (first 2 images) and during surgery. The blue lines mark the edges of the spinous processes. As you can see, the surgery involves changing the shape of the processes dramatically. This widens the gaps in between, stopping the processes contacting each other.
The surgery was completed under standing sedation and went very well. The mare is now in her rehabilitation phase, which is crucial for a good outcome in these cases. We wish her all the best going forwards.
Many thanks to the owner for permission to share her story.
