Imagine you are deaf. You can’t hear your smoke alarm or alarm clock. You can’t hear your text messages. You miss out on social interactions. That’s what life is like for deaf people, and it can be very isolating. A hearing dog can make a big difference.

You can help our charity of the year – Hearing Dogs for Deaf People – help a deaf person leave loneliness behind, by adding a donation via Pennies when you pay by card. Just a small donation can help deaf people escape isolation and reconnect with life. Thank you.

Heat stress starts as a reversible condition, but if not managed it will develop to heat stroke, which is extremely dangerous. If your pet shows any of these signs, they should be moved to a cool area and offered plenty of water to drink.

Unlike us, pets have no understanding that hot weather can be harmful. We control their environment, their access to water and their exercise, and they can’t speak up if they start feeling unwell. Heat stroke can rapidly progress and, even with veterinary treatment, is often fatal.

She started her weight loss journey with nurse Alex four weeks ago and has made a remarkable start by losing a whopping 0.7kg in weight and overall centimetres in body measurements during this time. This is a massive inroad to making her target weight!

Jade is starting to get more energy and apparently has a lot of international online followers to cheer her along!

Well done Jade!

Never give salt water to make an animal sick - it is dangerous.

Last month we attended the International Congress of the European Association of Poisons Centres and Clinical Toxicologists (EAPCCT) and presented a poster summarising our cases where salt (sodium chloride) was given to make a pet sick.

Overall, we had 579 cases involving administration of saltwater or salt emetic. The amount of salt given varied from “a pinch of salt” to a litre of salt water. Of these cases we knew the outcome in 240 cases and there was a fatal outcome in 7 dogs (3%); 6 dogs died and one was euthanised. In two cases the outcome was likely due to toxic effects from the substance ingested (aldicarb and suspected Gyromitra esculenta mushroom). In the other five cases, the outcome appeared to be directly or indirectly due to administration of a saltwater emetic. These dogs either developed hypernatraemia (high blood sodium concentration) which can be lethal or complications from vomiting such as aspiration of detergent into the lungs.

Making an animal vomit after ingestion of a potential poison is not aways appropriate and may be contraindicated. The use of saltwater is never warranted in the management of suspected poisoning due to the risk of adverse effects including hypernatraemia and aspiration, and potentially death.

Deafness can be a very isolating disability, so a hearing dog offers constant companionship and emotional support, giving deaf people the confidence to reconnect with their family, friends and community around them. This combination of practical assistance and lifelong friendship can be completely life changing.

Deafness is rising in the UK; by 2035, it is estimated that one in five British people (over 15 million) will experience hearing loss.

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is a national charity that trains dogs to alert deaf people to important and life-saving sounds like the smoke alarm, alarm clock and even a baby’s cry. Their burgundy coats also act as a visual reminder to the public when they are out and about that their partner is deaf. Donations raised through Pennies when you pay by card help support Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Just a small donation can make a big difference!

Blue-green algae are most commonly found in non-flowing fresh water such as lakes or ponds during the warm weather but can also occur at other times of the year. They can float on the surface of the water or be bottom dwelling.

Exposures in animals usually occur when they drink from water bodies where the algae have bloomed. Dogs are often affected when they swim in infested water bodies or groom themselves afterwards.

Although not all species are toxic, many blue-green algae produce toxins that can have effects on different body systems. Clinical signs therefore vary depending on the toxin(s) involved, but can include gastrointestinal signs, liver failure and neurological signs.

If you know or suspect that your pet has come into contact with blue-green algae, we recommend that you seek veterinary treatment as soon as possible. Veterinary professionals can call VPIS on 0207 3055 055.

Neutering means removing the reproductive organs; this is either the ovaries in females (known as spaying) or the testicles in males (known as castration). Neutering is a
routine procedure that does not require overnight hospitalisation, with an average recovery time of 5-10 days.

Both indoor and outdoor rabbits require vaccinations to keep them safe from infectious disease. Young rabbits are particularly vulnerable to serious illnesses, so it’s important to get them vaccinated early.

Rabbits can be vaccinated from five weeks old and will need yearly booster vaccinations throughout their life to maintain immunity.

Microchipping rabbits is not a legal requirement but is strongly recommended. Rabbits are excellent escape artists and, if they manage to escape the garden, it can be difficult to identify where they have come from.

Since you cannot check your rabbit’s teeth at home, it is important to look out for signs of dental disease.

There are many things that you can look out for that might indicate that your rabbit has some sort of dental health issue. If you notice any of these signs, it is important that you bring your rabbit to your vet for an oral assessment as soon as possible. Stopping eating altogether is an emergency.

Flystrike happens more often in warm weather, and in rabbits who have soiled fur (often due to poor diet, obesity or arthritis).

Throughout the spring and summer rabbits must be checked twice daily and any soiled fur cleaned. If you find any sign of fly eggs or maggots you must arrange for your rabbit to see a vet as soon as possible.
