⚫️Mouth - some grass seeds have been seen under the gum line.
⚫️Eyes - we have now seen many cases of grass seeds embedded under the third eyelid.

If your pet may have a grass seed imbedded under the skin, call us immediately on 01206 544918.

▪️ Neutering your male dog significantly reduces the risk of prostate disease and testicular cancer.
▪️ Castration can also have a positive effect on your dog’s behaviour by removing the main source of testosterone. This hormone can contribute or undesirable behaviours, including scent-marking and mounting.

𝑰𝒔 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒑𝒆𝒕 𝒔𝒖𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒓𝒈𝒊𝒆𝒔?

Atopy, or atopic dermatitis, is one of the most common skin conditions in both cats and dogs. It can cause severe itching, redness, and rashes, often resulting in skin infections.

Atopy can be caused by a number of common allergens in the natural environment, including pollen from grasses, trees and weeds, mould spores, house dust mites and insects.

Usually, atopy is first noticed in pets under the age of three. However, older pets can also become affected. Pets that develop atopy usually experience skin trouble throughout their lives.

Atopic dermatitis tends to be seasonal, particularly if it’s caused by pollen in the natural environment. Spring and summer are often the most aggravating time for pets with atopy.

You may have noticed some of the following signs;
🔸Scratching and rubbing
🔸Redness
🔸Hair loss from repeated biting, licking, chewing and scratching
🔸Rashes, infections, and irritation
🔸Scabs and bleeding
🔸Unusual odour
🔸Skin thickening and colour changes
🔸Ear infections
🔸Scales and crusts on the skin

We can help! Please call us on 01206 544918 to book an appointment to see one of our vets.

Walter, an almost 50kg Rottweiler arrived at our practice with his soft cuddly bunny to keep him company. 🥹🥰

Walter, somehow managed to completely split his dew claw on his left hind paw, causing it to bleed. We had to administer a sedation so that we could pull the split nail, clean the nail base and apply a bandage.

This big beautiful boy was sent home on a course of anti-inflammatory pain relief and went on to make a full recovery. 🖤🤎

Just like Gertie here. 🥰 Gertie is registered at a different practice in Colchester, however that practice does not perform keyhole procedures, so she was referred to us for her keyhole spay.

Gertie's procedure went really well and it was lovely to see her back for her post operative check ups. Her wound healed beautifully and she bounced back in no time at all.

We sent the lump off to be analysed by the lab which fortunately revealed that it was a Cystic trichoepithelioma which is a common benign tumour of follicular origins.

Hope's family chose to have her spayed via keyhole.

Keyhole surgery is minimally invasive with lower risks and many advantages. These include:

During surgery, our vet Josh noticed that Missy had a mass on her uterus. During a laparoscopic spay, only the ovaries are removed. However, to be safe, Josh removed the mass too so that it could be sent off to be analysed.

We were very pleased that the laboratory results revealed that is was a benign cyst.

Missy had a fantastic recovery 🩷

▪️Spaying your dog reduces the risk of developing breast cancer and prevents a fatal womb infection called pyometra
▪️Female dogs come into season twice a year for three weeks at a time. This can be messy and often attracts a stream of hopeful male dogs looking to mate. Spaying your dog eliminates the issue as well as the threat of unwanted pregnancy, which can be risky and expensive
▪️Many unneutered (or “intact”) dogs can experience a false pregnancy which can cause behavioural and medical problems

𝓛𝓲𝓽𝓽𝓵𝓮 𝓝𝓸𝓸𝓭𝓵𝓮𝓼 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓟𝓸𝓸𝓭𝓵𝓮 🥢

Poor little Noodles was in a lot of pain. He was shaking his head vigorously and tilting his head. Straight away we knew that this must be a dreaded grass seed. However, we were unable to remove it while he was awake, as it was too painful.

We placed an intravenous catheter and administered a sedative until he was sleepy enough so that we could look down his ears without causing distress.

Our nurse Meghan, looked down his ear with an otoscope and spotted the culprit and with a pair of crocodile forceps, she managed to pull out the grass seed.

Meghan also found some seeds within the fur around his paws that were making there way between his toes. Meghan clipped all the fur around his paws, so that his owner can now check his paws easily following a walk.

Noodles made a full recovery. 🩵

𝘾𝙪𝙩 𝙥𝙖𝙙!

This stunning red Labrador Luna, cut her pad while out walking.

The wound was very deep and continuously bleeding! We initially had to place a pressure bandage to control the bleeding before preparing her for surgery. Luna had to undergo a general anaesthetic so that we could flush out the wound to make sure no fragments of foreign material were still present and then stitch the pad back together.

The pad was stitched together beautifully by our vet Jodie. You could barely see the wound once she had finished.

Luna's pad has now completely healed. well done beautiful girl. 🧡

This pretty little girl Lexi developed an aural haematoma. This is where a blood vessel bursts within the ear pinna, causing it to fill with blood. This condition is usually caused by vigorous head shaking due to an underlying cause such as an ear infection.

Lexi was anaesthetised and had her ear drained and stitched to prevent the haematoma from returning.

We couldn't resist taking all these photos! She is just so cute!!! 😍

𝗗𝗼𝘁𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗳𝗮 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗼𝗻!

Dotty initially vomited once and was manically eating grass.
Our vet Jodie examined Dotty when she presented as a little quiet, lip licking, burping and had a very distended abdomen.

The decision was made to admit Dotty for the day so that we could perform a full work up, diagnostic imaging and a blood test.

We began by placing an intravenous catheter to administer a pain relief to make her more comfortable. Our nurses then took a conscious x-ray of her abdomen and at that moment we saw the reason for her huge abdomen! Her stomach was FULL!

A plan was made as to how we were going to remove this foreign material. We could induce vomiting or retrieve the material via an endoscope, however, there would be huge risks of the material becoming lodged within her oesophagus. The safest decision was made to perform an emergency exploratory laparotomy.

Our vets Jodie and Laura took her straight into surgery, where they revealed that her stomach was so full that it was taking up most of her abdomen! Laura and Jodie performed a gastrotomy and removed a whopping 1kg of fabric, foam, grass and plastic!

Where the stomach had stretched so much, there was some dark discolouration on the inside wall of the stomach. They managed to remove all the contents and stitch the stomach back together, fortunately it shrunk down nicely.

Dotty anaesthetic went smoothly and she had a stable recovery. Time and medication is what was needed next to aid her recovery.

The next three days were critical, our nursing team administered intense post operative care and gave her everything she needed to ensure a smooth recovery. Intravenous medication, exercise encouragement and hand feeding little and often, being careful not to overload her stomach.

Dotty was finally well enough to be discharged home. That afternoon we received an email of her first post operative poo, our team celebrated! The surgery was a success and Dotty was bright, happy and eating well! What an incredible patient! 🖤🤍

Today, we were very proud to be able to sign her off! 😇

This sweet little bunny was admitted to be spayed, however when our nurse performed the pre operative check up, she found that Mabel had testicles!

We called the owner to give her the surprising news and went on to perform a castration instead of a spay. 😁

Sexing rabbits can be tricky, especially if they are under 8 weeks of age! However, we will always check before performing any neutering procedure.

Well done Marvin for being so brave and we hope you like your new name. 🥰🐰

Beautiful Emi was recently neutered by our vet Jodie and she recovered beautifully.

For females, neutering removes the risk of an unwanted pregnancy. It also reduces the risk of other health conditions that could be life-threatening, such as pyometra (an infection of the womb) and also certain types of cancer.

A spayed female cat will not come into season, meaning she won’t ‘call’ for the attention of male cats and you won’t need to protect her from their unwanted attention.

Jodie saw three cases of grass seeds yesterday that had become embedded in dogs ears and paws! Unfortunately we cant always remove them without sedation.

Following a walk, please check your pets all over for grass seeds, the main areas to check are as follows:
👁 Eyes - Grass seeds can become embedded under the third eyelid
👂 Ears - you may notice head shaking
💪Armpits and groin area
🐾Paws - between their toes (You may notice a swelling between their toes, this could be a grass seed)
👃Nose - Grass seeds have even been inhaled into the nose, causing a sudden onset of sneezing and pawing at the nose!
👄Mouth - some grass seeds have been removed from under the gum line.

London Road Vets

London Road Vets is a state-of-the-art, purpose built facility in Lexden, Colchester. We have separate dog and cat hospital wards and a modern theatre onsite with Ultrasound and Digital X-ray means so we can treat your pet faster with less stress to both of you.

Our highly qualified and keenly motivated vets and nurses are passionate about what they do and will lovingly treat your animal as their own. We’re always learning and open to new skills. For example, did you know we offer Keyhole Surgery? We are now able to carry out a number of procedures, including spaying by keyhole, minimising the trauma and recovery time for so many animals.

Our nurses also run clinics for bandaging, repeat injections, blood pressure and blood glucose monitoring, they help with behaviour counselling and slimmer’s club. They also run puppy parties for early socialisation and are very keen to promote preventative care.

We still get emotional about seeing the journey of beloved family pets from first vaccinations to the final consultation; it might be our job but it’s also our hearts that break when we’ve nursed them and seen them recover and sent them home. We’ve been through the journey with our own pets and so we know how to deal sensitively with both their needs and yours.
