☀️ Chaddesden Big One! ☀️

Some of your Scarsdale team are down at Chaddesden Park in Derby today to help run the dog show alongside Sinfin Community Centre.

They have entertainment such as “guess the number of gravy bones in a jar”, bandaging teddies and some free colouring sheets for the little ones!

If you want to come and take part, get some information or just want to say hello then please pop down, they will be very happy to see you 😄

*Please also be very careful in this glorious weather with your dogs! We urge you to be safe and keep them as cool as possible! If you need any urgent advice then pop over to the Scarsdale stall, and fresh water will be available for your furry pals!

🐼Vet Nurses Awareness Month - Clinical Coaching🐼

If you’re interested in becoming a Veterinary Nurse, there’s a few options available to help kick start your career.

There is the route of a University degree or an apprenticeship.

Here at Scarsdale Vets, we support the training alongside apprenticeships where you work in practice as a Student Veterinary Nurse (SVN) whilst attending college 1 day a week, for 2.5 years before becoming a fully qualified nurse. During your time as a Student Veterinary Nurse you are paired with a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) who will help you gain experience and guide you in your studies along the way as their clinical coach.

Clinical Coaches are an essential part to a students success and they are with their students majority of the time to help Navigate them through their learning journey.

A clinical coaches role is to:
•guide the student helping to improve their practical skills.
•answer any clinical questions.
•help where needed with college work if student is stuck or doesn’t quite understand
•join meetings between the college and student
•help create a plan for the Nurse progression log.
•sign students off when they’re competent at a skill set.

Clinical coaches are very important to a student success and helps to create a new future of great qualified nurses.

🐨Vet Nurses Awareness Month - Meet Your Nurses🐨

Jessica March, RVN

I have worked at Pride for over 9 years, progressing from Kennel Assistant, to Student Vet Nurse and now to a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN). I have just recently qualified as an RVN and have taken on the role of General Nurse with Imaging, based at Pride Veterinary Centre. My particular interests are Anaesthesia, Diagnostic Imaging and Cardiology. I love that there is variation within my role and that we get to be involved with such interesting cases at Pride. I would love to work towards gaining my anaesthesia certificate, and to do some CPD specifically relating to Cardiology and also ECG’s.

I have a 5 year old Greyhound called Mitch, who we've had for just over 2 years. In my spare time I like to spend time with my family. I enjoy cycling, going for walks and to the gym.

Chelsea Clapham SVN

Chelsea is a Student Veterinary Nurse who is split between the Scarsdale Vets Oakwood and Shelton Lock sites. She started working for Scarsdale in February 2022 and has been on her student journey ever since. Chelsea has always had a passion for animals and says she has dreamed of working with them in one way or another since she was a child.

During her time here at Scarsdale Vets, Chelsea has worked in various departments and has gained lots of experience with many different patients. Through rotating round, she has realised that her favourite area of nursing is consultations and has decided that once she is a fully qualified Veterinary Nurse, she would be interested in becoming a consulting nurse and doing some further certificates in this area. This is mainly as although she finds surgery and inpatients interesting, she likes the bonds that you can create with patients and their families.

At home, Chelsea has three Guinea pigs called, Yoda, Chewy and Saber who she loves spending time with. Chelsea is originally from Rotherham where her dog, named Domino, still lives with her family.

🐦Vet Nurses Awareness Month - Meet Your Nurses🐦

Chrissie Thornewill RVN

"I'm Chrissie and I'm an RVN for our Vets at Night service.

My colleagues and I, based at our Pride Park hospital, work through the night, seeing any medical or surgical emergencies that may arise with your pet, nursing our inpatients already admitted to our hospital and providing any necessary advice for our worried pet owners.

As well as my RVN title, I qualified from Harper Adams University with a degree in Veterinary Nursing and Practice Management, and obtained my Certificate in Emergency and Critical Care in 2022 with my main interests including medical nursing, emergency and intensive care and general inpatient care.

My nursing journey started at Scarsdale Vets when I started as an apprentice in 2011, since then I have climbed each rung of the ladder to get to where I am today. In future, I plan to obtain additional qualifications relevant to my current role to continue building my knowledge and confidence when nursing all varieties of pets.

My favourite part of the job is seeing our patients progress since their admission, as well as forming a bond with these patients and seeing them get better each night. It certainly makes up for the sadder moments we witness within our veterinary career. I also really enjoy seeing the varying emergencies that come through our doors and with each shift, as I'm always learning something new and find the ability to apply this new found knowledge to any future emergencies we see.

After sadly losing my German Shepherd in 2022, my only pet is my budgie Casper, who is always keeping me entertained. I have since, however, become a dependable fur-baby sitter for family and close friends!"

🐧Vet Nurses Awareness Month - Meet Your Nurses🐧

Rebecca Hill RVN

"Hi I am Rebecca, most call me Bec for short, I have worked at Scarsdale since September 2021 where I started at Pride hospital and then moved over to the Langley Mill practice in July 2023. I qualified as an RVN in July 2018 and have worked in small animal veterinary ever since.

I will always go above and beyond to make sure my patients are getting the best care in all aspects of my job, but my absolute favourite thing about Veterinary nursing is consults. They are so varied, you never know what you are going to end up seeing, you could start off with a plan for the day and 2 hours in it is completely different! But I love it and I really love getting to know my clients and their pets, making sure we have a good level of trust so vet visits are as smooth as possible.

I spend most of my spare time with my lovely fiancé and beautiful daughter who is now 2 years old, we love going on day trips, adventures and holidays together. Most recently we took our first trip to the beach together!"

💊Vet Nurses Awareness Month - Dispensary💊

Once your pet has been to see your vet, they may be prescribed some medications. The veterinary surgeon must calculate the dosage and frequency and then create a label that contains certain information which gets printed out and taken into the dispensary. From here, some clinics like our main hospital on Pride Park, have dispensary staff who dispense these medications and our Client Care Advisors will hand the medication to the client.

At our Scarsdale sites, and most smaller practices, the veterinary nurses help with this task as they do not have a separate dispensary team. This includes choosing the right medication, counting tablets and making sure that any paperwork is correct and filled in.

As part of our nurse clinics at Scarsdale, we offer wellness screening for cats and dogs. This clinic is a medical MOT for your animals, with dogs over 5 years and your cats over the age of 7 years. During this clinic it may be able to detect underlying health issues that may not be visible to the naked eye. This is here to help give you peace of mind about your pet's health and wellbeing.

In wellness checks, your pet will receive an in depth health check from one of our qualified consulting nurses. Included with this health check is;

• Complete clinical history is taken
• A full nose to tail examination
• A blood sample taken in clinic to rule out all common organ function related diseases

🐶Vet Nurses Awareness Month - Meet Your Nurses🐶

Jade Westhead RVN

"I have a Diploma and Degree in Animal Behaviour and now a Diploma in Veterinary Nursing. I previously come from a farming background and decided to retrain as a nurse 5 years ago and have now been qualified for nearly two years. Starting an Emergency Critical Care CPD in September and possibly an Anesthetic Certificate next year. I really enjoy the Prep/Anesthetic side of my job role, getting the animals ready for their procedures and challenging my Anesthesia knowledge and standards.

I used to manage a private owned estate for an Arabic family back in London for a few years, raising husbandry/breeding standings. Introducing new animals to the collection such as donkeys, dexter cows, sheep (lambing), pygmy goats, maintaining and managing the red deer collection and training their three labrador puppies.

I travel a lot, mostly hiking with my dogs Cooper and Tucker. Cooper my cocker spaniel, Tucker my chihuahua. I have a cat called Tabithia and two Guinea pigs Marcel and Cornelius. One of my future goals is to travel to Canada to see the Orcas and Bears."

😺 Cat owners have until 10th June 2024 to microchip their cat.

😺 Cats in England must be microchipped before they are 20 weeks of age.

Here at Scarsdale Vets, we see a lot of stray cats brought into our practice sites and unfortunately the majority of them are not currently microchipped or have up to date microchip information. This makes it extremely difficult to reunite cats with their owners.

A new legislation in Parliament was laid on Monday 13th March 2023 introducing mandatory cat microchipping.

"I am a nursing manager at Pride Veterinary referral centre and I am responsible for managing a large team of nurses, student nurses and veterinary care assistants. My main areas of interest are internal medicine and emergency and critical care. I am a registered veterinary nurse but I also have additional certificates in medicine and ECC. I am also RECOVER certified and I am a mental health first aider. I am currently working towards my Level 5 CMI management certificate.

I am passionate about training and developing nurses to enable them to provide gold standard care to our patients. I love to development my own skills and enjoy continuously expanding my knowledge.

Outside of work I enjoy walking my chocolate Labrador, Ted, and spending time with my family. I love to travel, both abroad and in the UK. I like to stay active at the gym, bike riding, paddle boarding and horse riding."

🐞Vet Nurses Awareness Month - Meet Your Nurses🐞

Jamie Gregson RVN

"My name is Jamie Gregson and I am the Head nurse covering the Stapenhill, Hilton and Mickleover practices. I work predominantly at Stapenhill and occasionally at Hilton and Mickleover.

I am a first opinion nurse who qualified in November 2007 from the University of Lancashire with am honours degree in Veterinary nursing. I have since completed a Certificate in canine and feline clinical nutrition.

I still enjoy the variety of working in busy first opinion practice, but my particular interests are nutrition, anaesthesia and canine behaviour especially working with anxious dogs who struggle within the Veterinary environment. I have recently started studying towards a Diploma in canine behaviour and am currently covering maternity leave assisting on our puppy training classes at Pride park.

I have a Springer spaniel cross border collie cross called Merlin who I enjoying taking out walking and a black cat called Evie who now lives a life of luxury after being found as a stray at around 5-6 weeks old. Out of work I enjoy swimming and indoor cycling."
