It is now compulsory for all owned cats in England to be microchipped, making it more likely that lost or stray pet cats are reunited with their owners and returned home safely.

This includes cats that usually only stay indoors.

All keepers must ensure their cat is microchipped before they reach 20 weeks of age and their contact details stored and kept up to date in an approved pet microchipping database.

Attention all cat owners! Did you know that from 10 June 2024, it’s going to be a legal requirement for ALL cats to be microchipped in England? 🐈

Latest figures from our upcoming 2024 PDSA Animal Wellbeing (PAW) Report revealed that a whopping 54% of cat owners are still not aware of this new law! And since last year’s report, there’s only been a 3% increase in the population of cats with a microchip.

Currently, 22% of cats across the UK are still not microchipped. That's nearly 2.4 million cats 🙀

Getting your cat microchipped will ensure they have the best chance of being reunited with you as quickly as possible, should they get lost, stolen or injured. All cats must be implanted with a microchip before they reach the age of 20 weeks. And if they're found without one, owners will be given just 21 days to get their cat chipped or face a fine of up to £500.

Your one month countdown starts today! Find out how to get your feline friends ready: http://pdsa.me/knNx

Happy to our fabulous receptionists here at PDSA Derby! 🤗

This , we'd like to give a big shoutout to all of our wonderful receptionists 👏

Thank you for providing care to pets and their owners, keeping the admin side of our Pet Hospitals afloat (which is not an easy job!), and being a vital part of what we do in the name of helping sick and injured pets 🐾

Tracey, who is a receptionist at our Brighton Pet Hospital, said: “I always wanted to be a receptionist. I’m a very bubbly person and I enjoy talking to people. Plus, I love animals. So, when I saw the job advert for a Receptionist at PDSA, I jumped at the chance to apply. I knew I would feel proud to work for an organisation that does so much to help pets and their owners.” ❤️

On , let's talk about Alabama rot! 🦠

It's an extremely rare, but potentially deadly, disease that affects dogs. It causes damage to the blood vessels in the skin, leading to skin sores. In severe cases, it can affect vessels in the kidneys which can lead to kidney failure ❌

There’s been lots of research into Alabama rot but vets still aren’t sure what causes it, which makes it very difficult to prevent 😔 However, there are some sensible steps you can take if you are concerned for your dog:

🩺 Check your dog regularly for wounds, and contact your vet for an appointment if you are concerned – it’s easier to treat Alabama rot if the signs are spotted early.
🌲 Wash your dog's feet and any part of their body that is dirty as soon as possible after their walk, especially if they have been in a woodland or very muddy area. It’s been suggested that cases of Alabama rot are more common after a dog has walked in wet, muddy places.
📍 Avoid walking in areas known for Alabama rot

106 years ago , the very first PDSA dispensary opened in a tiny cellar in London’s East End. Our inspirational founder, Maria Dickin, saw the need for PDSA while volunteering in the slums, helping women and children ❤️

During the war, many people relied on their animals for work, to help with pest control and support the family. Sadly, a lot of animals were left to suffer because their owners couldn’t afford treatment – something Maria simply wouldn’t stand for.

Today, on our , watch Maria’s amazing story in her own words: http://pdsa.me/ptJL

Happy Howl-o-ween 👻

Here's our top tips on how to keep your pets safe this evening:

🎃 Make sure to keep all Halloween treats out of paws reach! Chocolate and some sweets (containing xylitol) can be highly poisonous for our pets, so make sure to hide them away!

🎃 Move any candle-lit pumpkins away from pets to prevent any accidents!

🎃 Reduce stress by creating a safe space for your pet such as a cosy den for dogs or a high up space for cats! You could also keep your Halloween treats outside (with a secure lid to prevent any neighbouring pets having a sneaky snack!) for trick-or-treaters to help themselves. The knocking on the door or unfamiliar people approaching the house can be very worrying for our pets, so keeping the treats outside helps your pet have a settled evening!

🎃 Be home before dark! Make sure to walk dogs before dark and be home before any Halloween activities begin. For cats, encourage them to come in earlier by moving their dinner time to just before dark!
