Winter dangers πŸ’™πŸΎβ„οΈ

❄ Antifreeze Poisoning: Antifreeze, commonly used in cars during winter, is highly toxic to pets but has a sweet taste that attracts them. Even a small amount can be deadly. Keep it stored safely and clean up spills immediately.

❄ De-Icing Salts: de-icing salts can irritate pets' paws and be toxic if ingested. After walks, wipe your pet's paws to remove any residue and consider using pet-safe ice
melts.

❄ Firework Preparations: In the UK, firework displays often start in late October and November, but some early events can occur in September. Be mindful of your pet's sensitivity to loud noises and take appropriate measures to ensure their safety and
comfort.

❄ Decreasing Daylight: As daylight hours shorten, it's essential to consider visibility during walks. Ensure you and your pet are visible to motorists by using reflective gear or accessories.

❄ Frozen Water Sources: Ponds, lakes, and other water sources may
freeze over in winter. However, the ice may not be thick enough to
support your pet's weight, posing a drowning risk. Keep pets away
from frozen bodies of water.

❄ Indoor Heaters: Space heaters, fireplaces, and radiators can be
dangerous if pets get too close. They risk burns or starting fires by
knocking them over. Supervise your pet around heat sources or use
barriers to keep them at a safe distance.

❄ Holiday Decorations: Festive decorations like tinsel, ribbons, and
glass ornaments can be enticing but dangerous to pets. They may
cause choking, blockages, or injury if chewed or swallowed. Keep
decorations out of reach.

❄ Holiday Foods: Winter holidays often involve rich foods and treats
that can be harmful to pets, such as chocolate, nuts, and fatty meats.
Keep human food away from pets and educate clients on the
importance of pet-safe treats during celebrations.

❄ Cold Weather Exposure: Prolonged exposure to cold temperatures
can lead to hypothermia or frostbite in pets, especially those with
short fur. Limit time outside, provide warm shelter, and outfit your pet
with coats or jumpers when needed.

Firework season is upon us, so here's how you can get prepared! πŸŽ‡πŸŽ†

It can be an extremely stressful and anxious time for our animals, so it's important to keep them safe and calm.

At Braids we are happy to offer advice on how to be prepared. We are happy to discuss over the phone or through email, however an appointment may be required.

Here are some at home things you can do:

🐾 Use pet remedy on your pets blanket/bed
🐾 Close your curtains and turn on the tv/radio
🐾 Pheromone diffusers can also be a great help, we recommend Feliway or Adaptil
🐾 Thunder shirts or ear muffs can also help to ease their stress
🐾 Create a cosy corner for them to feel safe in
🐾 Act normal and try not to over excite them as they will pick up on your energy
🐾 Owners can also look into non-prescription calming supplements e.g, Zylkene

Crate training advice for dogs! πŸ’™πŸ’™

Crate training is a great way to create a sense of security and safety for them, allowing them their own comfortable space to relax (especially nervous dogs). Here are some of our top tips:

1. Keep the crate door open and only start shutting it when your pet has voluntarily gone in

2. Fill the space with their favourite toys/blanket/bed

3. You can place a blanket or dark cover over the crate to make them feel more secure

4. Most importantly BE PATIENT!
