Just a reminder for all cat owners of the new legislation.

Please contact the practice if you have any microchipping queries, or to get your cat booked in.

📞 01256 764771
📧 [email protected]

It is now compulsory for all owned cats in England to be microchipped, making it more likely that lost or stray pet cats are reunited with their owners and returned home safely.

This includes cats that usually only stay indoors.

All keepers must ensure their cat is microchipped before they reach 20 weeks of age and their contact details stored and kept up to date in an approved pet microchipping database.

PAWSOME PETS- MARCH ⭐️

Our second Pawsome Pet for March is sweet little Molly. At the beginning of March, Molly came in to see Chloe as she had been vomiting, struggling to toilet and was just generally not herself. Due to her age - she’s about 18 years old! - it was decided that we would start with symptomatic treatment to try and make her feel less nauseous and some fluids were given to rehydrate her.

Unfortunately, Molly didn’t improve as quickly we had hoped, so she was back in over the next couple of days for ongoing intravenous fluid therapy and further investigations. Chloe ran blood tests which showed that Milly had kidney disease, but this still didn't explain all of her symptoms so she also had an ultrasound scan of her abdomen which showed she had inflammatory bowel disease. Neither of these conditions can be completely cured but with ongoing close monitoring, and palliative and symptomatic therapy, they can be managed.

After staying with us for the morning on Saturday, it became apparent that Molly would need some medications and care over the weekend while we were closed. To make sure Molly had all the support she needed, Chloe visited her at home on Sunday to administer more fluids and her tablets. She thankfully seemed a little brighter and had even ventured out to the garden for a sunbathe.

She spent one more day with us on Monday where Dan took over her care. After one final round of fluid therapy and plenty of fuss from the nurses, she went home to her owner feeling much more herself!

The next morning she had regained her normal appetite and was wanting lots of cuddles from her owner! We were all so pleased to hear that Molly was finally heading in the right direction after a long 7 days. She was a superstar while she was with us and became one of the Hook Vets extended family!

Well done Molly!

PAWSOME PETS- MARCH ⭐️

One of our Pawsome Pets for March is the lovely and irrepressible Jess. We saw her in September last year, where a small mass was noticed on one of her toes. Whilst in for her annual vaccinations in March, Dan measured the mass and found it had grown since her last check up. She was started on some treatment as it had also become ulcerated and infected.

At her recheck appointment a week later, the mass had grown even further. Maria recommended we remove it to send for testing. Unfortunately due to its size and location, to remove it completely meant we would have to remove Jess' entire toe. Jess was quickly booked in for surgery, Chloe performed the amputation and successfully removed the digit.

Jess then had to come back for regular wound checks and bandage changes. She was an absolute superstar and although a little bouncy at first, she soon settled and patiently allowed the vets and nurses to reapply bandages every 2 days for almost 3 weeks! She was a very frequent visitor and the whole team came to know Jess very well.

Chloe saw her at the end of the month for a final check; her wound has healed beautifully and Jess has adjusted well. She is still just as happy to visit the practice, and we always look forward to seeing her.

Well done Jess!

PAWSOME PETS - FEBRUARY ⭐️

Our second Pawsome Pet for February is handsome Henry.

In December of last year Henry came in for his check up and annual vaccinations. Once he had been weighed, it became apparent that he had lost a little bit of weight, approximately 700g. After an examination, our vet Clare suspected that Henry may have hyperthyroidism - which causes his metabolism to increase and lose weight despite eating very well.

The next step in investigations were blood tests, however Henry is not our biggest fan so he had to stay in for some mild sedation for the bloods to be drawn!

As Clare suspected, the blood results diagnosed Henry with hyperthyroidism, so he started on a medication to help manage his thyroid levels. Henry isn't a great fan of tablets, so Clare selected a cream medication which is rubbed on his ear and the medication is absorbed that way.

He has since been in for repeat blood testing and is much improved, his thyroid levels are back within the normal range and he has gained 800g!

Henry will continue coming in for regular checkups to keep a close eye on his progress. We are all super happy Henry is doing well and hope he will see us as friends one day!

PAWSOME PETS - FEBRUARY ⭐️

One of our Pawsome Pets for February is sweet little Basil.

Basil came to us feeling under the weather, being sick over and over and not wanting to eat (very strange for a Labrador puppy). After an examination, Clare made the decision to keep Basil in with us so we could investigate further. Although his initial x-rays were inconclusive, Clare was suspicious that something more than a tummy bug was going on.

We repeated follow up x-rays the following morning, which showed his stomach was distended highly suggestive of a blockage, and we elected to go ahead with an exploratory surgery. Inside his stomach and small intestine it was discovered Basil had eaten quite a quantity of sheep wool, which his stomach had spun into a dangerous rope trying to tear through his intestines. Chloe delicately removed the wool which needed 3 regions of his stomach and intestines to be opened to free it up. It was a high risk surgery which needed Chloe, Emeline and Clare to complete and took over 4 hours.

After a few days spent with our amazing nursing team and the team at VetsNow he has made a full recovery and is back to being his usual bouncy self!

We couldn’t help but fall in love with him, and were making the most of the puppy cuddles whilst he was with us!

Well done Basil! 🌟
