As temperatures soar, think of our four-legged friends 🐶 At 30°C outside, it takes just 20 mins for your car to hit 46°C 🌡️ This puts your dog at risk of fatal heatstroke. Officers will smash car windows to free them, but we'd rather we weren't needed. Please don't leave dogs in cars on hot days. If you see a dog in distress, please call 999.

Please don't take your dogs out in the heat. If you have to do so please walk them either really early in the morning or late at night when the weather is much cooler. DOGS DIE FROM HEAT STROKE NOT IF THEY MISS THE ODD WALK OR TWO.

Every year we hear of dogs dying as a result of heatstroke.💔
New research reveals that exercise is by far the most common trigger for heat-related illness, and that the risk is greater in flat-faced breeds. 🐾

We're sharing our advice on how to keep dogs cool, and how to spot and deal with the early signs of over-heating should this occur – which include seeking early veterinary care and advice –to prevent the devastating situation where dogs get sick or die from serious forms of heat-related illness.

Very sad

Very sad

We are very sorry to report the loss of Maya, a beautiful one year old Hungarian Vizsla. She passed away recently after contracting Parvovirus. Maya’s family have kindly given us permission to use this lovely photo to help raise awareness of Parvovirus.
Parvovirus has been uncommon for a number of years but we are now seeing a resurgence.
We have contacted several vets in SW London and know of a further 20 cases.
This is devastatingly sad and we want to do all we can to help reduce the risk for your dogs in SW London.
This is generally a preventable disease so please ensure that all of your dogs have been vaccinated and are up to date with their boosters as this is the best protection.
Maya’s owners were very diligent and ensured that Maya was up to date with her vaccines but nothing ever gives 100% protection and Maya was exceptionally unlucky.
A very small number of dogs do not develop immunity when vaccinated as puppies and it can help to give them a top up booster at 16 weeks old. This can be done under normal situations, but is much more important in high risk situations as we may be facing currently (WSAVA guidelines,2016)
A top up booster can also be considered for dogs up 14 months old.
Most puppies will be fine without this and so we do not wish to scaremonger anyone into having it done. However we feel it is important to be open and honest about the rise in cases and the risk of disease in the current environment.
If it is something that you are concerned about, then please book in with Paul or Meabh to discuss and and get a booster.
The main symptoms of parvovirus are vomiting and diarrhoea. However please do not worry if your dog has one or both of these symptoms as the vast majority will just have a very simple and treatable tummy upset.
We are here to help both you and your pets anytime. So feel free to get in touch if you need us (link in bio).
In the meantime, please do not panic. The risk to your pet is extremely low and vaccinations are the best way forward to not only protect your dog but others as well.

Please be careful with your young pups as there is a variant going round of parvo virus that although dogs have been vaccinated against it the dogs are still dying from it.

There have been several recent reports of dogs catching parvovirus on Common, with sadly at least two deaths recorded.

Dog owners are advised that:

• puppies & dogs should not meet up to stop the spread of infection

• that your dog's vaccinations should be up-to-date

• that hygiene is important

• in case of concern, dog owners should consult their vet.

For more information about parvovirus and how to protect your dog, see the Blue Cross website: bluecross.org.uk/pet-advice/parvovirus-dogs

We'll post updates & advice as and when we receive it.

This is Nala.

She is a young fit Labrador who was playing football on a overcast 21⁰c day.

At 1.30pm she was rushed to Hook Vets with heat stroke.

Her temperature was at a whopping 41.3⁰c. A dogs normal temperature range is 38 - 39⁰c

Heat stroke can cause irreversible damage or even death. Thankfully her owner noticed and reacted quickly and Nala is doing well 💜 His quick actions saved her life.

Dogs that are more prone to heat stroke are old dogs, overweight dogs, flat faced breeds and puppies. However any dog of any age or breed or fitness can get heat stroke.

Signs of heat stroke are:
⚠️ Faster, heavier breathing
⚠️ Excessive thirst and drooling
⚠️ Increased heart rate and pulse rate
⚠️ Dark coloured gums/ tounge (red/purple)
⚠️ Glassy eyes
⚠️ Staggering or weakness
⚠️ Seizures
⚠️ Unconsciousness

If you think your dog has heat stroke DO NOT throw cold water on them as this can cause the body to go into shock.

On warm days you can help your dogs by:
✅ Restricting exercise
✅ Make sure they have access to cool, shaded areas
✅ Give them access to fresh water
✅ Walking them first thing in the morning or last thing at night when it's cooler
✅ If your pet is over weight start them on a weight loss journey

About us

Earlsfield and District DTC was set up in 1963 and originally based at the United Reformed Hall in Earlsfield. After spending about 10 years away from the area the club moved back and is now based at Battersea Ironsides Sports Club every Monday Night. The club is registered to the Kennel Club and operates the Kennel Club Good Citizens Scheme. We teach all levels of obedience from Puppy through to advanced dogs. All training is reward based and fun for the dogs. We welcome people to pop in on a Monday night when ever they wish to so that they can see what we do.
