The Midland Veterinary Surgery was established in 2001 by Brian Stenson and William Wildgoose, both of whom had worked for over 20 years in the practice, which was formerly owned by Ronald Gardner. It is a four-vet practice that cares for companion pets, such as cats, dogs, rabbits and other small furries, but we have an additional interest in exotic pets such as birds, reptiles and ornamental fis

h. The building is a former drinking house that was converted into a veterinary surgery in the 1970s and has recently been extensively renovated. We have been a veterinary nurse Training Practice for many years and currently have six listed VNs.

Please be aware that the government has stated that from the 10th June all it will be compulsory for all cats to be microchipped, regardless of whether they are indoor or outdoor cats.

'The new rules mean cats must be implanted with a microchip before they reach the age of 20 weeks and their contact details stored and kept up to date on a pet microchipping database.'

You can do this here in practice so please give us a call on 020 8539 3538.

7 Summer Hazards for Your Dog

Merry Christmas!!

All of us here at Midland Veterinary Surgery wish you, and your pets, a very Merry Christmas!!

This is a great idea for a cheap and entertaining toy for your cat. Collect the cardboard centre from your old toilet rolls, or cut kitchen roll centres in half. Stick them together, place on a non slip surface, fill them with treats and let your cat do the rest!

These two freshly hatched birds were given to us after being found in a garden. We ensured they were fed before handing them over to a specialist rehabilitation centre. It is unusual for birds this young to survive but it is certainly worth a try. If you see young feathered birds sitting on the ground, this is perfectly normal - they leave the nest a short while before they can fly and are extremely unlikely to have been abandoned by their parents. If the bird is in danger from a road or predators, then move it to safety but within earshot of where it was found. Young chicks like these two, ideally should be placed back in the nest, if this is not possible then they must be passed on to an expert as the chances of survival are slim. Good luck little birds!

To become a qualified veterinary nurse, our students must undertake 3 years training. This training includes theoretical and practical instruction. Gaining practical experience can be difficult but we all have to start somewhere. Meet Hugo the horse. After retiring as a much loved toy, Hugo has become invaluable to our student veterinary nurses. in the past week, Hugo has been bandaged, positioned for radiography, had a drain inserted and removed, received emergency treatment for haemorrhage, been resuscitated, has had his wounds stitched and as shown in the video, has had 'blood' taken from various fake veins. Thank you Hugo!
