We are excited to let you know that we now stock the new Liver Fluke Rapid Antibody Tests. The temptation to react to the warnings of a higher liver fluke risk this season by resorting to routinely treating with flukicides will be strong for some, but without a risk assessment and appropriate testing, it is not possible to know when or even if treatment is actually required.

These lateral flow tests can pick up antibodies in relation to both acute and chronic stages of infection, allowing for more targeted treatment strategies and results are available within 10 minutes.

They are user friendly but if you’d like further guidance our Vet Tech Becca can visit your farm and run the tests with you. The kits contain 10 tests as, in most cases, 10 animals will need to be tested in each group.
Staying ahead of liver fluke outbreaks is key to maintaining optimal herd health and this new test could now be a crucial part of that strategy.

At Alnorthumbria we stand with all our farmers, whether you have travelled to London today or have had to stay and tend to your livestock.

Your hard work and dedication does not go unnoticed. Our vets wore their wellies to work today (in the office not just on farm) to show our support. 🚜

One of our Alnorthumbria hats also made it onto the news today after one of our farmers kindly gave it to a news reporter who was feeling the cold!! ❄️

Despite the bitterly cold weather, we had a good turnout of cattle farmers last night, keen to hear about IgG testing in calves, the new Bovilis Cryptium vaccine, and other seasonal topics. MSD Animal Health kindly paid for the food which warmed the cockles and made for a sociable evening. If you missed out, speak to any of our vets about this very useful vaccination to prevent Crypto in your calves.

𝘊𝘳𝘺𝘱𝘵𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘷𝘶𝘮 can spread rapidly, affecting large numbers of calves in a short time. While mortality rates tend to be low, the parasite can severely impact the health and growth rates of affected calves.

Fortunately, a new vaccine is now available to help reduce the clinical signs of this disease.

Following the identification of further BTV-3 cases, the Restricted Zone (RZ) has been extended again to include the Isle of Wight, part of North Yorkshire and part of Oxfordshire.

It now covers Bedfordshire, part of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, City of Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, East Sussex, Essex, Greater London, part of Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Isle of Wight, Kent, part of Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, part of North Yorkshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, part of Oxfordshire, Suffolk, Surrey, West Sussex and part of Warwickshire.

Keepers of cattle, sheep, camelids and other ruminants must remain vigilant. Bluetongue is a notifiable disease and must be reported by law. You are not permitted to move any animal showing these clinical signs and if you see any of these signs you must report it to APHA.

Animals must only be moved where it’s absolutely necessary.

Please also follow the restrictions on animal and germinal product movements that apply - more information on the restrictions and licences is available on GOV.UK: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/bluetongue-movement-licences-and-designated-slaughterhouses.

Did you know that new cases of Bluetongue virus are still being reported in the south of the country?

Although we are much further north (our nearest case was in east Yorkshire), the mild weather has allowed midges to continue transmitting infections, so please stay vigilant for any clinical signs of the disease. For more information, visit this link: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/bluetongue-leaflets-videos-and-posters

Bluetongue update: 139 BTV-3 cases have been confirmed within the Restricted Zone - which covers 21 counties in England, and a further 14 cases, including 2 cases in Wales were linked to moves from high-risk areas.

While temperatures are lower, midges are still active and infected midges can still cause new infections if they take a blood meal.

Livestock keepers must stay vigilant, report any suspicion of bluetongue immediately, follow the restrictions on animal & germinal product movements & only move animals when it’s absolutely necessary.

Please check the bluetongue map, GOV.UK: https://www.gov.uk/bluetongue & GOV.WALES: https://www.gov.wales/bluetongue-virus-btv for the latest info on BTV-3 restrictions, licences & vaccination.

Meet Elliot, our new Aberdeen Angus bull from Blackhaugh Farm. He’s seen getting his introductory checks from Henrietta of Alnorthumbria Farm Vets. Our herd is pretty much closed, meaning we rarely bring in any animals, to minimise the chance of bringing in disease. However we do need an occasional new bloodline. In these cases we consider the health status of the herd they’ve come from, & then quarantine & test on arrival. Elliot is getting the first part of his TB test here, fingers crossed for Friday when the results are read 🤞🤞
